Chapter 444: Chapter 448: Shang Family’s Daughter (9)
If my sister-in-law is preparing something to take back to her maternal home, it must be something good.
Wan Xixi’s eyes shifted as she pulled her throat and shouted toward the direction of the main hall, "Jiaming, Xiao Xiao, your sister-in-law is going back to her parents’ home. Aren’t you going with her?"
Hearing their young aunt’s voice, Yuan Jiaming and Yuan Xiaoxiao exchanged a glance, both of them delighted.
Their mother was going out.
Also called out by Wan Xixi’s voice were Old Man Yuan and Old Mrs. Yuan.
Old Mrs. Yuan had already suffered a verbal setback from her eldest daughter-in-law while in the kitchen, and heard the meaning in her youngest daughter-in-law’s words: the eldest daughter-in-law was grabbing things to take back to her maternal home.
She immediately got a spurt of energy and hurried out.
Sure enough, as soon as she came out, she saw the heavy items in her eldest daughter-in-law’s hands, certainly filled with many fine things.
Old Mrs. Yuan stared intensely at the basket in Su Li’s hands and said with irritation, "It’s not a holiday or special occasion, stop always thinking about running back to your maternal home."
"Your hands must be sore from carrying such a heavy basket, and besides, your parents’ family lacks nothing. These things should remain in our home instead."
The original owner might still be considerate of Old Mrs. Yuan as an elder and mother-in-law, always yielding a little, but Su Li was not inclined to indulge them in this habit.
Su Li replied, "What mother says is true, our home doesn’t have much to offer, but it wouldn’t be proper to always arrive empty-handed and then return fully loaded. If the people in the village found out, they’d think my husband lacked propriety, and if his reputation were to be ruined, in the future..."
Old Mrs. Yuan’s rising temper immediately subsided when her most valued eldest son was mentioned.
Yet, her gaze still couldn’t help but linger on the basket in Su Li’s hands.
She had seen clearly that her formerly easy-to-deceive eldest daughter-in-law, for some unknown reason, had suddenly become tough and prickly, uncareful handling could leave her hands covered in blood.
Really, a coarse and sharp-tongued woman from a lowly merchant family.
Wan Xixi, seeing that her mother-in-law had not gained any advantage, felt aggrieved yet helpless, and could only watch with envy as her sister-in-law took a basket full of good things and left for her maternal home.
As the eldest daughter-in-law left without looking back, Old Mrs. Yuan was angered once again.
Looking at the other two daughters-in-law, she was infuriated; they seemed to have lost their sense of duty.
With hands on hips, she stood in the middle of the courtyard and started shouting, "What are you all standing around for? Don’t you have work to do?"
"Some are born with delicate skin and tender flesh, you all, with your rough and rotten skin, cannot compare. You’d better think about how to work properly instead."
Intending to mock the eldest daughter-in-law, Old Mrs. Yuan’s words ended up including the other two daughters-in-law.
Even though they really couldn’t compare to their sister-in-law, being bluntly called rough and rotten skinned by their mother-in-law understandably upset them.
Zhang Qiaoqiao’s shoulders shrunk inwards as she silently retreated behind her daughters.
This earned her an unsatisfied glare from her three daughters, who then felt a surge of sympathy for their mother.
Wan Xixi felt wronged too, but as a newlywed in the sweet stage with her husband, she immediately covered her mouth, tears rolling down, and ran off to find her husband.
Su Li hadn’t actually done anything, but just because of her, the Yuan Family was stirred up quite a bit.
Zhang Qiaoqiao was always the honest type, naturally not one to provoke trouble, but she had three daughters ready to defend her honor.
Especially the little girl, she was a fiery little chili pepper.
Wan Xixi had gone to Lao San and poured her heart out in tears, provoking Lao San’s deep hatred for Su Li and dissatisfaction with her own mother.
"Don’t you dare discipline my sister-in-law harshly, taking it out on your daughter-in-law instead? Who do you think you’re looking down on?"
Old Mrs. Yuan could have never anticipated that just because of one phrase she uttered, the family members, one by one, would start fussing around her.
It was all a matter of self-interest; during the lifetime of the original owner, Yuan Family was all harmony and joy, solely because the original owner, a prime target, attracted all the hostilities.
Everyone was eager to tear a piece off the original owner, caring little for others.
This lifetime, as soon as Su Li arrived, she disrupted their actions. Once each person’s interests suffered, their dissatisfaction grew, their tempers flared, and quarrels were soon to follow.
Living together in the same house, there are bound to be bumps and scrapes; the dirt was merely concealed.
With Su Li withdrawing herself, she effectively stripped them of their fig leaf. No one was better than the other.
After Su Li left, she had no idea about the surprising scene that unfolded behind her in the Yuan Family.
Once she was outside the village, she hired an ox cart to take her to town, and then, holding her chest, returned directly to the Su Family.
Su Li’s return delighted Old Master Su and Mrs. Su, yet they asked in surprise, "Didn’t you just come back a few days ago?"
Mrs. Su glanced behind Su Li repeatedly, not seeing the familiar small figures, and then asked her eldest daughter, "Why didn’t Jiaming and Xiao Xiao come with you?"
Su Li casually put down the things in her hands onto the table and said indifferently, "Don’t even mention those two unfilial things."
"They are truly of the Yuan seed. Compared to me, their birth mother who took care of them, they are still closer to the people of the Yuan Family."
Mrs. Su, displeased, patted the back of Su Li’s hand, "What are you talking about? Jiaming and Xiao Xiao are your children; they are still young. They will be fine if they are taught properly."
Unlike Mrs. Su, Old Master Su didn’t show much of a special reaction to Su Li’s words.
Although he did have a soft spot for the children, it was mostly for his daughter’s sake.
He saw clearly that those children had been spoiled by the Yuan Family.
Every time they came to the house, taking and eating, they would look up with an entitled expression as if the Su Family owed them something. They would imply that the Su Family was rich but inhumane, and that their grandparents were slaving away at home while they lived in luxury, which was unfair.
Especially Yuan Jiaming, who would sigh deeply when eating a bowl of bird’s nest soup: "Grandpa and Grandma have never eaten such good food in their lives."
It really irritated Old Master Su.
Yet, as the two children were still loved by his daughter, he could only out of sight out of mind.
Seeing this sort of behavior from the Yuan siblings, Old Master Su couldn’t help reflecting: perhaps his initial thoughts had brought his daughter harm.
Having her marry into such a family.
Su Li spoke, "Mother, don’t make excuses for them. Truly, they’re not that young anymore; both have been studying with their father for several years, yet they still act cluelessly, or perhaps, that’s just the Yuan Family’s nature."
As she spoke, Su Li pulled the cotton cloth off the small box on the table, and then delivered a bombshell that startled both of her elderly parents.
"Father, Mother, I’m planning to divorce Yuan Wen."
"Look, I’ve brought all my dowry back."
Mrs. Su’s first reaction was: don’t be ridiculous. Her instinct was to reject this ludicrous idea.
Old Master Su thought for a moment and then threw out, "What do you plan to do with the two children?"
