Chapter 377: Chapter 381: The Demon’s Gratitude (Part 4)

Su Li’s act of feeding the fish in the lotus pond caught the attention of the masters of the Su Residence.

At dinner time, the Old Madam, who always ate vegetarian meals in the Buddhist hall, even made a point to come out and ask her grandson about his peculiar behavior of the day.

Su Li thoughtfully laid out the dishes for the Old Madam and picked out her favorite vegetarian chicken for Madam, before putting down his chopsticks and calmly said, "I merely noticed that the little fish in the lotus pond were too undernourished, so I wanted to help them bulk up a bit."

Old Madam: "....."

Madam: "....."

The surrounding servants and Maids: "....."

What had they just heard?

Everyone looked as if they had been struck by lightning.

They all remembered the fish in the lotus pond; they were the young master’s dearest pets, taken care of very meticulously.

And that red carp—it was extremely, extremely beautiful.

Especially the magnificent scales of the carp, which shone dazzlingly under the sunlight, just like precious stones, each one glittering with eye-catching brilliance.

But...

If their memories served them right, that red carp looked quite plump, weighing at least twenty or thirty pounds.

Besides this carp in their household, they had never seen any other that was larger.

Was this still considered too frail?

Or did their understanding of frail differ from others’?

The stunned servants and Maids looked toward the young master who spoke as if what he was saying was only proper.

He wasn’t joking; in his heart, this was what he believed.

However, seeing the expressions on the faces of everyone else present—apart from the young master—the servants and Maids were reassured.

Others were just as flabbergasted as themselves, it wasn’t that they had misunderstood the meaning of the words, but rather, the perspective of their young master...

It was Mrs. Su who first regained her composure, realizing that the surprised gaping was quite unseemly, she quickly closed her mouth and discreetly used her handkerchief to touch up the corners of her lips, then took a sip of tea that the Maid was holding.

She then gave a forced laugh and agreed, "I think so too, that carp could stand to gain a bit more weight, just like the fish in the New Year paintings, now that would be beautiful."

Old Madam: "....."

Su Li: "....."

Fortunately, Mrs. Su did not betray her conscience by agreeing that the carp was too undernourished.

The expressions on the Maids and servant’s faces seemed to say: Who knew Madam was this kind of Madam...

Mrs. Su gave an awkward, sheepish laugh.

After eating a few bites, the Old Madam put down her bowl and chopsticks and said, "Then shall we have the kitchen prepare a few meat dishes to send over?"

She had seen pampering, but never to such an extent.

The original owner had managed to grow into a kind and gentle man amid the excessive doting from the womenfolk of the house, which was a miracle in itself.

Su Li also felt quite embarrassed and hurriedly interjected, "No need, I think the little fish have probably eaten more than enough."

It was a casual excuse she had made up on the spot; she didn’t expect that her family would believe it, even inventing many justifications for her.

With such a caring family, it was no wonder the original owner had found it hard to let go and felt such deep remorse.

Blaming herself for bringing the demon into their home, she had harmed all her relatives under the same roof.

---------------

As night fell, the entire Su Residence was immersed in silence.

Across the street, the sound of the night watchman could be faintly heard.

The bright crescent moon that had hung in the sky had, at some unknown time, tucked itself behind the dark clouds.

The pitch-black night deepened even further, and the ever-constant chirping of insects fell silent as well, as if they too were hiding away.

The night watchman’s hair stood on end as a chill crept over him for no apparent reason; he hastily took a swig of the strong liquor he carried with him for courage, shook his head, and quickened his pace.

The first dew of dawn appeared.

What those outside could not see was that the Su Residence was enshrouded in a layer of white fog.

Every room and courtyard fell into a quieter moment than usual, as everyone simultaneously entered a deeper level of sleep.

Even the large guard dog housed in the gatehouse let out a whimper, drooped its eyelids, and lay on the ground motionless.

If it weren’t for its still-heaving chest, it would appear to have died.

As the white fog seeped through the gaps in the doors, Su Li had already ceased breathing.

Lying quietly in bed for a while, she opened her eyes and slowly dressed herself, then pushed open her room door and stepped out.

The closer she got to the lotus pond, the thicker the encompassing fog became.

When Su Li arrived at the edge of the lotus pond, the fog had grown so dense it was impossible to see even your own hand in front of you.

Standing by the lotus pond, Su Li’s white brocade clothes blended with the surrounding fog; had it not been for her pitch-black hair, absolutely no one would have noticed a person standing there like this.

The eerie scene was enough to send shivers down one’s spine.

What was more terrifying was that with the passing of time, more and more water vapor condensed in the air.

Then, above the lotus pond, a light rain began to fall.

Outside the vicinity of the lotus pond, the rest of the place was indeed dry and hot; not to mention rain, there wasn’t even a moist spot on the ground.

On the surface of the lotus pond, a red silhouette writhed continuously within.

Looking closely, one could see that the red shadow was... struggling.

Its heavy, clumsy body seemed to be a great burden, making its movements appear slightly sluggish.

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning appeared out of nowhere in the sky, its target clear, striking directly toward the Su Residence’s lotus pond.

Su Li seemed to see panic in the eyes of the red carp struggling on the water’s surface, its tail thrashing even faster

It looked as if it was trying to evade the lightning striking towards it.

But the curse of a cumbersome body made its movements a fraction too slow.

At such a critical time, a small difference resulted in an outcome worlds apart.

The purple lightning showed no mercy as it struck the carp, tearing open its flesh.

Su Li took a deep breath through her nose and seemed to smell a hint of burnt fragrance.

Hmm, grilled carp; the flavor should be quite good, why not give it a try...

After the first bolt, a second, then a third lightning strike followed in quick succession, leaving no chance for reaction.

Just as the red carp was about to be struck dead on the spot by the lightning, it opened its mouth wide and spat out a pearl bright as a Night Light Pearl.

The lustrous white glow enveloped the carp, forming a protective barrier.

The remaining lightning all struck this light screen, and by the time the last bolt came, the screen was already covered with dense cracks.

And the last bolt of lightning, thick as a barrel, had already been forged in the rolling dark clouds.

The Carp Spirit was doomed...

Such an imposing lightning strike, it certainly wouldn’t survive.

Su Li had once been a demon herself and naturally knew how strict the Heavenly Dao was with demons cultivating a human form.

If initially, the Carp Spirit hadn’t been struck by the lightning, then relying on its Magical Treasure, it could naturally have withstood the Transformation Heavenly Tribulation.

Just like in the original owner’s memory, the Carp Spirit was indeed set to transform into human form tonight.

But now that the opportunity was lost, what lay ahead was irretrievable; the Carp Spirit was likely to meet an end of utter annihilation.
