Chapter 323: Chapter 327: The Altered Life (Part Nine)
The next day, Su Li got up early with Granny Su and headed out with some belongings, and the other Su Family members also went off to work.
Xiao Hong was left alone at home.
Before leaving, Su Mo repeatedly reminded her to stay at home.
As soon as the house was empty, Xiao Hong locked the front door and took the bag of sweets Granny Su had given her the previous night back to her parental home.
At home, Qiao Xiaoxiao, unable to work because of a leg injury, stayed to look after the younger ones and cook.
Upon seeing Qiao Xiaoxiao, Xiao Hong asked anxiously, "What happened? You hurt your leg, and you didn’t even tell me."
"Mom really, giving you so many tasks in your condition."
Qiao Xiaoxiao pursed her lips. Seeing Xiao San, Xiao Si, and Xiao Wu attracted by the sugar bag Xiao Hong placed on the table, she blinked and whispered softly, "I just twisted my foot a bit, it’s nothing serious..."
"I’m just fooling my parents," Qiao Xiaoxiao’s voice grew even softer. "I have to stay home these days waiting for a notification, just in case I passed..."
Xiao Hong clapped her hands, "It’s good you’re staying home waiting for the news, if you passed, we definitely can’t let mom and dad know."
"But with the weather being so hot, why don’t you bring the little ones over to my place? We can keep the door open, and if the mailman comes by, we’d be able to see him."
"My sister-in-law is waiting for news at my place too..." Xiao Hong smirked, "it’s quite a crowd."
Qiao Xiaoxiao, somewhat afraid of the old lady of the Su family, hesitated, "Would that be alright?"
"No worries, no one is at home..."
"But what if mom and dad come back and don’t see anyone..."
"Just say you came to my place to get some sugar. Mom and dad would be thrilled."
Qiao Xiaoxiao was quite tempted.
Once at the Su Family home, Xiao Hong turned on the ceiling fan in the main hall, and the cool breeze quickly took away the heat from their bodies.
The little ones were running and jumping around.
Worried they might cause trouble, Xiao Hong stuffed a piece of rock candy the size of a fingernail into each of their mouths, sweetening their eyes.
Xiao San and Xiao Si, rarely getting candy, cherished it.
They savored the rock candy slowly in their mouths.
However, Xiao Wu, a boy, chewed his rapidly and soon swallowed the crushed candy.
Then, turning his eyes, he reached out to Xiao Hong, "Sister, I’ve finished mine, give me another."
"No more..."
Hearing there was no more, Xiao Wu threw himself on the ground and began to cry, "I’m going to tell mom you have candy but won’t give me any."
Disturbed by Xiao Wu’s yelling, Qiao Xiaoxiao took the rock candy she was holding and gave it to Xiao Wu.
"Your second sister doesn’t want any, here you have it."
Xiao Hong was furious but then remembered something, "I almost forgot about this little tattletale demon. Wait, I’ll go inside and get you some eggs to take back."
Saying this, Xiao Hong grabbed Xiao Wu by the ear, "If you make any more trouble, your sister won’t give you any more treats or let you come here to cool off."
After scolding her own brother, Xiao Hong went inside to pack eggs for Qiao Xiaoxiao.
At that moment, a postman dressed in a green uniform rode his bicycle to the front gate of the Su house.
Leaning forward to look inside and before he could speak, Qiao Xiaoxiao approached him.
"There’s a letter for Su Li."
Qiao Xiaoxiao glanced and asked, "Only for Su Li? Isn’t there one for Qiao Xiaoxiao?"
The postman shook his head, "Not this time."
Qiao Xiaoxiao gripped the letter tightly. By the time she realized, the letter in her hand was crumpled beyond recognition.
"Who was that?"
Xiao Hong, wrapping five mud-covered eggs in silk cloth, craned her neck to ask.
Qiao Xiaoxiao subconsciously hid the letters behind her back and said with a smile, "No one, just the girl next door, Hei Yatou."
She blurted out a casual lie.
Qiao Xiaohong didn’t pay much attention and was again bothered by Xiao Wu yelling, "Stop bullying your two older sisters..."
Taking advantage of the moment her older sisters weren’t paying attention, Qiao Xiaoxiao quietly slipped out.
When she came back, Qiao Xiaoxiao’s heart was still pounding.
It was her first time doing something naughty, and she felt both nervous and scared.
Following Granny Su like a lucky charm, she calmly listened to the various aunts and elder ladies’ compliments, maintaining just the right degree of smile.
Granny Su was just short of praising Su Li as a fairy that exists in heaven but not on earth.
If it hadn’t been for her tactful reminder that it wasn’t good to steal the bride’s thunder at someone else’s wedding, Granny Su might have been even more unrestrained.
Suddenly, Su Li’s expression changed, and her smile broadened slightly.
So it was you...
After showing off outside and coming back, Granny Su was beaming and her voice was louder than ever.
As soon as she entered, she started clamoring, "Is there any news today?"
Qiao Xiaohong answered with a wooden face, "No..."
She had answered this question many times today; nearly everyone who came back asked her.
Granny Su turned to Su Li and comforted, "It’s okay, it might be a few more days... Grandma will make you a sweet dumpling to enjoy."
Qiao Xiaohong silently cursed in her heart: It would be better if she failed.
Otherwise, her arrogance would shoot through the roof.
Qiao Xiaohong was muttering to herself with her head lowered when she suddenly heard Granny’s words, "Eggs..."
Her heart was in a panic, and before she could think of an excuse, Granny Su briskly walked out from the kitchen.
"Where are the eggs, the eggs... Why are there two missing? I counted them this morning..."
Qiao Xiaohong’s face stiffened, "My sister hurt her leg, so I took two for her."
Granny Qiao carefully gathered the other eggs in the straw nest and warned, "Don’t let it happen again."
She was in a good mood today, so she didn’t fuss over it much.
"Ni Zi, Xiao Miao, you two take a couple back to eat as well."
"Xiao Hong, you get none, haha..."
Who would have thought the old lady was so rushed this morning that she still had time to specifically count the eggs in the kitchen?
Fortunately, the hens laid three more eggs during the day, so there were only a few missing.
This time Qiao Xiaohong felt guilty and seeing her sister-in-law and younger sisters-in-law receiving eggs while she got none, she didn’t make a fuss.
With her legs crossed, Su Li suddenly asked Qiao Xiaohong, "Second sister-in-law, no one really came today?"
Qiao Xiaohong’s eyes flickered slightly as she patted her chest and assured, "Really, no one."
She turned around and comforted Su Li instead, "Little sister, I know you’re anxious, but being anxious won’t rush it."
"If only I could perform spells like those people in the stories of immortals, I would conjure it up for you to make you happy."
Su Li smiled slightly, squinting her eyes, "Second sister-in-law, you really have a way with jokes, you could go on stage and perform."
Qiao Xiaohong’s actions and tone were very exaggerated, a bit different from usual.
As night fell, the whole village quieted down, save for the occasional barking of a dog at the village entrance, leaving silence otherwise.
Lying in bed, Su Li suddenly opened her eyes and her Divine Sense circled around the Su family.
Except herself, everyone in the Su family was sound asleep.
She put on her shoes, got out of bed, and walked out leisurely.
