Chapter 123: Chapter 127: The Creature Known as Phoenix Man (Part 11)
Su Mansion
Su Fugui was being supported by someone, clutching his chest, his eyes wide open as he sat gasping for breath on the couch. Opposite him, Su Qing looked on guiltily, twisting her heart watching her grandfather.
But Su Qing just watched, her eyes brimming with concern, hesitating without stepping forward.
Beside Su Qing, Zheng Youli and Shi Erxiu were contentedly touching the expensive couch beneath them, their narrowed eyes gleaming.
Zheng Zhaodi and Zheng Qiudi stood behind their parents, their faces full of curiosity and excitement as they glanced around.
Zheng Zhanpeng stood on the other side of Su Qing, firmly holding her hand, his bright eyes fixed on Su Fugui.
It seemed like the whole Zheng family had shown up.
The atmosphere on Su Fugui’s side was particularly tense, only the heavy breathing from his windpipe was heard, and his ashen face showed he was extremely upset, almost failing to catch his breath.
The nanny supporting Su Fugui continually cast condemning glances at the group opposite, especially lingering on young lady Su Qing.
How much the master doted on her, yet how could she bring so many nonsensical people to upset him.
Previously, the nanny thought the lady’s behavior was too cold-hearted—how could she treat her daughter like that? But now she realized that the lady saw things more clearly. The Su family had raised Xiao Xiao for over twenty years and still hadn’t managed to truly bond with her. Could she truly claim any bond with the Su bloodline, inherently cold-blooded and heartless as she was?
Compared to Su Fugui’s frustration, the Zhengs seemed much more relaxed.
In their view, the matter was done, like meat on the chopping board. Even in their rural home, a girl pregnant out of wedlock was a source of shame, let alone in the wealthy Su family.
Although Su Qing had now legally married their son, according to traditional customs, without hosting a wedding banquet and not publicly announcing it, there remained a lack of acknowledgment.
Shi Erxiu then turned with a smile to look at Su Qing’s grandfather, "In-law, your granddaughter is already pregnant. What’s the point in opposing it now... if her belly grows bigger, it won’t look good on us either..."
Shi Erxiu felt confident in understanding the opponent’s weak points, sure that they would agree.
Now, those who were anxious and angry were Su Qing’s family members, since their daughter had been disgraced by getting pregnant.
Su Qing instantly widened her eyes in disbelief and turned to look at the elderly man sitting on the couch.
Just yesterday, she had seemed kind and affable, so why were the words coming out of her mouth today so harsh and biting?
Zheng Zhanpeng also felt a headache coming on due to his mother’s unrestrained nature; even if he felt this way, it wasn’t something to mention at such a critical moment.
"This is probably a strategic move by my mother; just endure it for now. Once your family agrees to our arrangement, we’ll formally apologize to your grandfather, okay?" Zheng Zhanpeng pressed on Su Qing’s hand and whispered persuasively next to her ear.
Su Qing’s previously resentful mood gradually calmed down.
She lowered her head, no longer daring to face the astonished and disappointed looks from her grandfather across.
At that moment, Su Fugui genuinely felt a chill in his heart. He had doted on this granddaughter from childhood, so precious that he feared she would melt in his mouth and break in his hands. Yet, she just watched indifferently as outsiders insulted her own grandfather.
Zhenzhen’s behavior was utterly disheartening.
Su Qing could only keep explaining to herself that it wasn’t that she didn’t care about her grandfather. As long as her grandfather and mother accepted Zhanpeng, she would definitely kneel down and apologize to them.
Seeing the twitching, wealthy-looking old man across from her, Zheng Youli’s expression of satisfaction was superficial.
Wealthy families weren’t anything special, after all. With immense wealth but no son to show for it, now, it’s benefiting others.
So what if he had been poor all his life? Now that he had a good son, wasn’t he treasured and held close?
Zheng Youli had never felt as upright as he did at that moment.
"Relative, my wife is right. We can wait, but Su Qing’s belly cannot," Zheng Family insisted, repeatedly mentioning the matter of her pregnancy in front of her family.
Each time it was mentioned, Su Qing’s head hung a bit lower, and she couldn’t help feeling a twinge of regret and a sense that something was amiss.
Did Zhanpeng really love her that much? Otherwise, why would he allow his family to keep bringing up this disgraceful matter?
"Relative, how many tables do you think are appropriate for the two children’s wedding?" Puffing away at his cigarette, Zheng Youli smiled and said, "But we have to invite everyone from our village. Many of them have never been to a big city before. We’ll need to charter a few buses to bring people over, and accommodations need to be arranged as well. Everyone in our village is connected to us, not to mention they helped Zhanpeng a great deal during his school days. If arrangements weren’t made properly, it would be disgraceful."
"But as you know from my family’s situation, all our money went to Zhanpeng’s education..." Looking around Su Mansion’s lavish setting, he added, "Anyway, your family isn’t short of money..."
This statement was shameless, yet the Zheng Family members nodded in agreement, naturally assuming that since the Su Family was wealthy, they should handle everything.
Who asked your daughter to fall for my son?
Indeed, having a son is essential; the wisdom passed down through generations is never wrong.
Seeing Su Fugui’s health deteriorate further and the opposite party continuing their incessant demands, they spoke about their requests without pause.
No dowry required, but a bridal house, car, some shops, and cash were demanded...
Shameless people are invincible. The maid looked strangely at Xiao Xiao, who had always been well-behaved at home; what sort of taste did she have to fancy such an outrageous family?
"Excuse me, could you please refrain from smoking in the room..." The maid continuously patted Su Fugui’s back, her tone unforgiving as she said impatiently, "Our Su family does not welcome you, please leave."
"Tsk tsk tsk, who do you think you are? Just a dog kept by this family. Is this how you talk to your master’s guests?"
The Zheng sisters’ remarks were even more venomous.
The maid’s eyes immediately reddened as she had been with the Su Family for over thirty years, even when the Lady was still a young girl. For all these years, she had considered herself part of the family and never imagined she would be directly demeaned like this.
Moreover, with such remarks, she didn’t even know how to retort, given her role as the Su Family’s maid.
"Su Qing, are you just going to stand by and watch people insult the nanny who has cherished you since you were a child?"
A cold, dignified voice resonated from the entrance, reaching everyone present.
