Chapter 61: Changes in view

Swallowing with some difficulty, Cheon Areum quickly reached for the water bottle Yoon Seoyul handed him. He unscrewed the cap with one hand, took a long gulp, and exhaled sharply, wiping his mouth with the back of his sleeve.

"Rian, just feed yourself. You don’t need to feed me when we have Yoon Seoyul here, right?"

"Is that so?"

"Yeah."

Agreeably nodding, Rian continued eating the fried dumplings he got for himself as Yoon Seoyul continued to feed the steamed dumplings to him.

"After dropping Rian at the daycare, can we go to the gate together?"

Cheon Areum asked as another piece reached his mouth.

"No. Rest for today."

"What about the gate then?"

"You don’t have to worry about that. Instead, why don’t you move into the house today?"

"We’re moving today?"

Rian scooted closer, dragging his plate with him as he sat beside Yoon Seoyul. Looking up with bright, curious eyes, he chimed into the conversation.

*SHHRRK*

Cheon Areum pulled the tape taut over the cardboard box, the final strip snapping into place with a satisfying sound. Grabbing a thick black marker, he scrawled Rian across the top in large, neat letters. This was the last one. Every piece of clothing, every essential item they might need, had been folded, sorted, and packed away.

He placed the last box at the small mountain of sealed boxes stacked neatly by the door. The cramped and empty apartment felt truly devoid of any life too now. He opened the refrigerator, full of delivery food. One by one, he began pulling them out and setting them on the countertop. No point wasting them. They’d just take it all with them too.

Yoon Seoyul had already dropped Rian off at daycare earlier in the morning before heading straight back to work. In the evening, he’d pick up Rian, and then together, they’d go straight to his place. It was about time for them to get back.

He had tried to dig up any documents related to the apartment, but in the end, came up empty-handed. Whether Cheon Areum had bought the place or leased it remained a mystery. Still, it should be fine to leave the furniture behind and simply keep the door locked. The landlord of this building was about as reachable as a ghost, never showing up for anything. Besides, the entire building felt abandoned anyway.

Just as he shut the now-empty refrigerator, the doorbell rang. He moved quickly to answer it, revealing Yoon Seoyul standing on the other side. Without saying much, Yoon Seoyul stepped in and began hauling the boxes out—two at a time. On the second trip down, the small stack by the door was gone, and the apartment looked even more hollow than before. As the last of the boxes disappeared, Rian came bounding up the stairs and into the apartment when he locked the entrance door.

"Hyung!"

Cheon Areum turned to the voice, done locking the door.

"Why’d you come up? Do you want to look around the apartment?"

"No. I came to get you!"

Rian loudly declared, holding the straps of his backpack. His energy levels the same as ever as he grabbed Cheon Areum’s hand, leading him to the stairs.

"I could have come down by myself though."

"Yoon Seoyul folded the seat I was lying down on, so I thought I would come and get you."

Rian jumped down from the last step of the third-floor staircase.

"Did you pack everything important?"

"Yes. We can always come back if I did forget something."

"You’re going to keep it?"

"Keep the apartment?"

Rian stopped on the top of the last staircase.

"The building."

Cheon Areum narrowed his eyes, glancing down at him.

"This building is mine?"

At his questioning tone, Rian shook his head as he climbed down.

"Hyung, you shouldn’t be forgetting that..."

"You’re right."

He had been wondering all this time why their grandmother hadn’t interfered—why she hadn’t forced them out or pulled some strings to get them kicked out. If it had been him, he would’ve bought the entire building at double the price out of spite, just to mess with them.

This must’ve been the reason Cheon Areum had purchased the building. Maybe it was cheaper than buying a house. Or maybe he had done it to keep up the illusion—that they were still living in a modest apartment. That way, their grandmother could spend the rest of her life trying to track down a phantom landlord, unaware that the person she was trying to outmaneuver had already beaten her at her own game.

Passing by the wall crumbling from existence, Rian spoke, pointing at it.

"Hyung, do you know who did that?"

"Must’ve been the wind."

Rian, already used to vague or evasive answers like that, simply nodded and didn’t press the matter further. The two of them stepped out of the building. Just beyond the doorway, Yoon Seoyul came into view—his sleeves rolled up, sharp features gleaming slightly under the late afternoon light—as he slammed the trunk of the sleek black car shut with a solid thunk.

Noticing them approaching from a distance, Yoon Seoyul turned and walked over, a silver lock dangling from his fingers.

"Should I lock the place?"

"Yeah."

Cheon Areum replied in a neutral tone. Yoon Seoyul seemed to know he was the owner of the building already. He had been keeping tabs on him from the start. Even on his grandmother, he knew more than him. Possibly even things Cheon Areum had yet to discover. To this day, he didn’t know why he did that from the start, but he wasn’t really hiding the fact either.

If Cheon Areum used his savings and sold the building, he would be able to buy a house now. He should do that since they might not be able to live in Yoon Seoyul’s house for a long time.

"Hyung, where will I sit?"

Rian asked, peeking up as he clambered into the passenger seat.

"Here."

Cheon Areum spoke as he picked Rian up and settled him comfortably on his lap. The door shut as Yoon Seoyul returned and slid into the driver’s seat.

*

Yoon Seoyul pulled open the iron gate with a soft creak, letting the golden afternoon light spill over the front garden. As soon as the path cleared, Rian dashed through like a shot of energy, his feet barely touching the ground. He leapt onto the paved stones, hopped over flowerbeds, and spun in circles across the trimmed lawn. He was in a particularly good mood today—anyone could tell. Whenever joy bubbled up inside him, it spilled out through his limbs, and he couldn’t seem to stop moving. Jumping, running, twirling—it was simply how he expressed happiness.

Cheon Areum smiled faintly at Rian and then turned his gaze to the left, his smile dropping dramatically. A large moving truck stood parked just outside the neighboring gate, its back wide open as movers bustled around, carrying furniture and neatly labeled boxes into the house next door. The timing couldn’t have been more coincidental—or perhaps unfortunate.

Of all days, it had to be today.

He narrowed his eyes slightly, recognizing the sleek, modern design of the furniture as it passed by—likely hand-picked by someone with taste or status. Just as he was about to look away, the car came to a halt behind him. Yoon Seoyul quietly pulled the car inside the gate, parking it. He got out and began unloading the boxes from the trunk.

It was at that moment. Long, silky strands of unmistakably pastel pink drifted into view from the neighboring gate. The breeze lifted the ends of her hair like petals, catching the sun. Lee Nari walked outside of the gate.

"What are you looking at?"

Yoon Seoyul glanced in the same direction where he was staring. Cheon Areum’s hand moved before he could think, hurriedly pushing against Yoon Seoyul’s chest.

"It’s nothing. Let’s go."

That’s when an unfamiliar voice traveled from the side.

"Yoon Seoyul!"

In a chirpy tone, Lee Nari called out, walking over to them. Cheon Areum clicked his tongue. Before he could push him back, Lee Nari had already recognized Yoon Seoyul.

"Why are you moving into that house? I told you not to do it."

Yoon Seoyul, sounding a bit annoyed, spoke, pushing Cheon Areum out of the way and pulling him behind him.

"Why not? I like the house."

Lee Nari’s smile bloomed with radiant familiarity, her voice light and breezy as if she were chatting with an old friend.

Cheon Areum, who had been standing just behind him, attempted to step out from his shadow. But Yoon Seoyul was faster—his hand pressed flat against Cheon Areum’s wrist, guiding him back again. Lee Nari didn’t miss the motion as she leaned slightly to the side, clearly trying to peek around him. She had almost seen him before Yoon Seoyul turned, spinning slightly on his heel, his broad frame completely blocking her view again.

"Oh? Who’s this? Why are you hiding him?"
