Chapter 48: Chapter 47 - The Trial pt. 2

When Lev entered the courtroom, he realized that this trial was being broadcast live using Memory Orbs.

He could feel the waves of magic flowing inside the memory orb, capturing everything that was happening in the courtroom.

Memory orbs could indeed connect to each other—in other words, they could record and display images directly from a distance.

However, this required two or more Memory Orbs to be set up in a certain way.

It was possible that King Vlasdislav was broadcasting the events in the courtroom live to the place where most people gathered, which was in the middle of the city square.

’Or maybe it’s being broadcast throughout the kingdom?’

Lev’s lips immediately curled upward when he realized that the trial he was conducting was being broadcast live in public.

’Let’s put on a grand show.’

Contrary to most people’s expectations, even though Lev looked pitiful with his eyes closed, indicating that he could not see, and his hands dangling, indicating that they were disabled, Lev did not show any signs of trembling with fear like a prisoner about to be executed.

Although Lev’s legs had been shaking violently from sitting continuously for 55 days, he was now able to stand steadily with his chest lifted.

The first event announced by the person standing near King Vlasdislav was the reading of the charges.

Are trials on the continent of Avalon the same as trials on Earth, where the defendant has the right to hire a lawyer to defend him?

No, of course not.

Everything depends on the king’s decision.

In Lev’s case, he could only hope that King Vlasdislav would defend him.

Of course, he knew that this was impossible.

The person standing near King Vlasdislav shouted loudly, "... According to our investigation, demonic energy was found at the place where Duke Andrei was killed."

He explained all the findings they had obtained from investigating the case. Starting from the relationship between father and son—Lev and Andrei—all this time, to people’s views of Lev.

"Strong evidence has been found that Lev Razanov beheaded his own father, Duke Andrei. However, since Lev could not have killed Duke Andrei with his own strength, he somehow managed to use a strange ritual to summon a demon."

The man explained that they had also found traces of a magic circle beneath the Razanov family mansion where Andrei’s body was found.

With all the evidence they had found, King Vlasdislav had no choice but to sentence Lev.

"What do you think, Royal Magician?"

The person whom King Vlasdislav asked this question was Wyatt, who was sitting not far from him.

After hearing King Vlasdislav’s words, Lev finally learned Wyatt’s official title.

Royal Magician.

Those who held this title were people who had been recognized by King Vlasdislav himself.

Their abilities as magicians were guaranteed.

Those with the title of Royal Magician were also treated the same as high-ranking nobles.

However, they did not own land like the nobles. Their only duty was to serve as the main weapon of the Dragomirov Kingdom due to their prowess in magic.

Lev had heard that only seven-circle magicians could obtain the title of Royal Magician.

The duty of a Royal Magician was to protect the kingdom they served. However, when the Dragomirov Kingdom met its end, Wyatt was nowhere to be found.

’Or, was he the one who destroyed this kingdom from within?’

Lev had this suspicion because the Hero’s System identified Wyatt as a demon—The Wrath Sin.

"As the leader of the investigation and the person who captured the defendant who attempted to escape, I beg Your Majesty to sentence the defendant Lev Razanov to public execution."

Wyatt expressed his opinion while scratching his thick beard.

Lev thought that King Vlasdislav would immediately impose the punishment as suggested by Wyatt, but that did not seem to be the case.

"Do you object to the Royal Magician’s opinion?"

King Vlasdislav asked Lev that question.

Hearing that the king was giving Lev a chance to speak, the nobles who were in the courtroom immediately looked angry. They objected to the king for giving Lev a chance to speak.

It was natural for them to react that way.

In the history of trials, a king had never given a defendant who had been convicted so much evidence to speak—even if it was just a few last words before execution.

"Very well. If you have no objections, I announce that Lev Razanov will receive his punishment—"

"Excuse me, Your Majesty."

Maybe because the king was under pressure from the people in the courtroom, he frowned and quickly took back the chance he gave Lev to speak.

However, Lev immediately interrupted King Vlasdislav.

Many people started cursing Lev. They all scolded him for daring to interrupt King Vlasdislav.

Rather than listening to the nobles’ reproaches, Lev was more focused on the large transparent fly circling his head. That fly was Astaroth, by the way.

Lev looked relaxed because Astaroth had awakened from his long sleep.

As usual, Astaroth was flying around Lev’s head.

"Hoam~ I didn’t expect your body to have such a comfortable bed."

The first thing that Astaroth, who looked like a newborn baby, said was such confusing nonsense.

Astaroth had awakened just as Lev stepped into the courtroom. Therefore, the courtroom’s battlefield-like atmosphere immediately disappeared.

Strangely, Astaroth appeared from the black lotus crest on his chest.

Perhaps what Astaroth meant by a very comfortable bed was the black lotus crest on his chest—a crest that represented the Black Magic Authority.

Probably because Astaroth’s life force had not yet been fully restored after waking up, he seemed confused about where Lev was.

He looked at the nobles who were still focused on cursing Lev.

"Where is this? Why are they all ranting and raving at you?"

After flying around for a while, he returned to Lev.

This time, he looked at Lev from head to toe.

"Pfftt. What happened to you, weak human?"

The tone he used sounded very annoying.

Lev pretended to shoo away a fly with his left hand.

As a result, Astaroth’s head was hit hard by Lev’s hand.

"Ouch! Eh, how could you hit me when I’m in spirit form? Wait, is it because we made a contract? But, previously..."

After spinning around in the air from Lev’s blow, he started babbling something—he looked like he was thinking hard with his hand over his mouth, but his head was bruised.

Lev also wanted to ask Astaroth various questions.

Why did he disappear for almost two months?

Why did he only appear now?

What factors influence how long it takes for him to appear?

What is the connection between the black lotus crest on his chest and the comfort he feels?

He was forced to put all those questions aside because of his precarious situation.

"Can you open your storage without being too conspicuous?" Lev whispered to Astaroth.

If Astaroth used space magic as magnificently as before, he would be put in a difficult position. ’In a trial like this, it’s better to appear as pitiful as possible without showing any strength.’

"Of course. I previously displayed space magic grandly because I wanted to show off my power too much."

Luckily, Astaroth was able to do it.

As if there was a pocket inside his wrinkled pants, he reached into his pants like a teenager who wanted to satisfy his lust without regard for the place.

From inside his pants, Astaroth activated his magic while feeling disgusted.

Soon, a magic circle formed, and a black hole appeared. From there, Lev took the memory orb.

When he wanted to show the memory orb to the nobles who were still babbling incoherently, he was surprised by a soldier who suddenly broke into the courtroom.

Seeing the arrival of a soldier who dared to break into the courtroom, King Vlasdislav raised his hand to instruct the nobles to be quiet.

"What is going on?"

"I apologize for breaking into the courtroom, Your Majesty."

The soldier immediately knelt on the floor and saluted.

"There are several people trying to break into the palace."

"Who are they? Are they spies from another kingdom?"

"No, Your Majesty. They are just ordinary citizens, so we couldn’t use force—actually, we tried using a little force, but they still tried to break in, risking their lives."

"What do they want?"

"They seem to want to make some statements regarding today’s trial."

King Vlasdislav placed his hands together in front of his mouth. "In that case, let them give their statements. We will listen to what they have to say that they are willing to risk their lives for."

The palace of Eira’Volin was not a place where ordinary people could enter.

One had to climb a snowy mountain slope to reach the palace.

Of course, there was a special path for nobles, royal guests, and the royal family itself, but it was off-limits to ordinary people.

In other words, the only people who would dare to come forward and testify would be those who attempted to climb the snowy mountain themselves.

Soon after, several people were allowed to enter the courtroom.

Lev recognized their faces.

They were the people he had saved from Andrei—they were Andrei’s kidnapping victims.
