The Enhanced Doctor -
Chapter 64 - 064 Doctors are not God
Chapter 64: 064 Doctors are not God
(Thanks to my friend 08a for the reward and encouragement)
Liu Banxia’s glorious deed of turning the tide and saving the patient’s finger spread far and wide by the time he finished dinner with Liang Xiaolin.
If such a thing were done by a big shot in orthopedics or general surgery, it wouldn’t mean much. However, Liu Banxia was just a resident doctor. A seemingly minor debridement job could escalate several levels if it became infected with flesh-eating bacteria.
Besides, Liu Banxia had been making quite a fuss lately; whether it was warring with Chen Hongyang or digging pitfalls for Qin Hai, these incidents had all become popular topics of conversation at the Second Hospital.
But it was only this time that many people in the Second Hospital remembered the name "Liu Banxia." Previously, when other departments discussed him, they usually used the moniker "the very brave resident doctor from general surgery." No one had bothered to remember his actual name.
"How can you eat so much? I try hard, but I only manage to eat so little," Liang Xiaolin said.
"I guess I expended a lot of energy today. Actually, I usually eat quite a lot too," Liu Banxia fudged.
His food intake today was indeed larger than usual. He figured it was because strengthening his stamina attribute had led to changes in his body. Naturally, he needed to consume more food to store nutrients and improve his physical strength.
It seems each of his four attributes indeed had their mysteries. He was only at the beginning stage, and it was already so remarkable; he couldn’t imagine what it would be like when he reached a higher level in the future. He’d probably ascend to the heavens!
"Eh? Who put this anatomical skeleton here?" Back in the emergency room, Liu Banxia’s attention was immediately caught by the skeleton next to the triage desk.
"You’re lucky, lad. Director Xu had someone send it over. He said you could borrow it for a few days," Zhou Li said.
"Ah? Really?" Liu Banxia was overjoyed.
Though it was only borrowed for a few days, it was a great honor. That was from the head of orthopedics, a renowned surgeon! And what was he in comparison?
For him, currently studying orthopedic techniques, this teaching skeleton was a godsend. He would have loved to buy one, but he was flat broke.
Watching Liu Banxia caress the skeleton, Liang Xiaolin shivered. Pervert, she thought. From her perspective, Liu Banxia’s current actions and expression held a hint of infatuation.
"Banxia, stop looking and come consult with me," Chen Jianxin called out at this moment.
Liu Banxia reluctantly patted the skeleton one more time before heading towards the internal medicine consultation room in the emergency department.
The consultation room was packed. An elderly grandmother lay on the examination bed, her abdomen visibly distended. Two men and a woman stood beside her, their faces etched with worry.
"Take a look at the films first," Chen Jianxin said, handing the films to Liu Banxia.
As soon as he glanced at them, Liu Banxia sighed internally.
It had been several days since the Emergency Department had faced a life-or-death situation; he hadn’t expected to encounter two in a single day.
The CT scan clearly showed a tumor on the descending colon. It had completely blocked the intestine, causing an intestinal obstruction, with metastases to the pericolic lymph nodes and the lungs.
The abdominal distension, consistent with the CT findings, was due to intestinal obstruction complicated by intestinal perforation. Fecal matter from the intestine had leaked into the abdominal cavity.
After reviewing the other examination reports, which indicated the patient had a history of hypertension and diabetes, he fully understood the current situation.
"Banxia, any thoughts?" Chen Jianxin asked.
Liu Banxia shook his head. "Dr. Chen, and to the patient’s family, I believe you already know the situation, don’t you? Perhaps we should step outside to discuss this?"
"Doctor, there’s no need. I know my condition; I don’t have long to live. You have Demerol, right? Just make sure I don’t suffer," the patient on the bed said.
Her voice was low but firm.
Liang Xiaolin was taken aback. This meant the patient had given up on treatment and simply wished to pass away without excessive pain.
"Alright, Grandma, we’ll respect your wishes. I’ll admit you to the hospital," Wang Huan, the attending gastroenterologist, nodded with a smile.
"Thank you, Doctor. I was worried you wouldn’t accept me," the old lady replied, a smile appearing on her face.
Walking out of the consultation room, much of the joy from his successful surgery dissipated.
"Dr. Chen, that wasn’t very kind of you. Why call me for this? You could have just called Dr. Liang," Liu Banxia complained.
"It’s beneficial to experience more. You may have been at our hospital for a while, but you still lack sufficient experience," Chen Jianxin said with a smile.
Wang Chao, standing nearby, winked at him and then slipped away with Chen Jianxin.
"What does Dr. Chen mean? If we attempted to intervene, couldn’t we potentially buy the patient some more time?" Liang Xiaolin asked.
Liu Banxia nodded. "We could indeed buy her some more time, but the remainder of her life would be spent in suffering. Someone once told me that doctors aren’t gods. Today, I’m passing that on to you."
"I truly admire the old lady. Facing death calmly is easier said than done. Many healthy people say that if they were diagnosed with cancer, they wouldn’t seek treatment. They think it’s better to use that money to live their remaining days freely."
"But when it actually happens to them, who can truly face a cancer diagnosis with composure? At least, I know I couldn’t. If I were in such a situation, you must do everything you can to save me. Never give up."
"Get lost," Liu Banxia retorted.
Liang Xiaolin was thoroughly exasperated. He’s teasing me again, trying to get a rise out of me! Hasn’t he had enough? she fumed internally.
Actually, she had somewhat misjudged Liu Banxia. He had only made a casual joke because he saw her spirits were low.
But he didn’t mind, because he had just spotted Qin Hai and Qi Wentai walking down the corridor. So, he swaggered towards them gleefully.
"Director Qin, I need to report that I just assisted with a surgery in orthopedics. So, I wasn’t absent from my post in the emergency department without authorization," Liu Banxia said earnestly.
Qin Hai merely glanced at him, ignored him, and walked straight into his office.
He had just come from the Orthopedics Department, where he had inquired about the details. He couldn’t let Liu Banxia have such an easy time.
When Qin Hai first heard the news, his immediate thought was that Liu Banxia had violated regulations again and was showing off. However, after understanding the full situation, he had to admit that while Liu Banxia might have been a bit ostentatious, his diagnosis and actions were compliant.
Ultimately, situations often had to be judged by their results, as had been the case several times before. Liu Banxia had saved the patient’s finger, which was undeniably a success. This surgery could even be discussed as a model case study in meetings.
Before Liu Banxia could fully enjoy his moment of smugness, Shi Lei, who had walked over, thumped him on the shoulder.
"Boss, you have to praise me," Liu Banxia said, rubbing his shoulder.
"Praise you, I can. But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop thumping you. Getting cocky again, are we?" Shi Lei asked.
"Absolutely not," Liu Banxia quickly answered.
"Alright, I’m heading back then. Don’t forget, the day after tomorrow, keep your schedule clear and come with me," Shi Lei said, then turned and walked back the way he came.
Liu Banxia was thrilled. This meant a chance to earn some extra cash, and that was definitely something to be happy about.
