Chapter 48: 048 Are you starting to cheat again?

Leaving Director Zhou Shuwen’s office, Liu Banxia felt much more at ease. At least things hadn’t escalated, and it seemed he had managed to muddle through this.

Still, I need to remind myself that getting too big for my britches is a problem that needs fixing. If I keep this up, I’ll probably offend everyone in the hospital.

I made such a mess with Qin Hai, and he doesn’t even have much power. If I actually provoked some monster backed by a powerful figure, not even turning into Sun Wukong could save me.

"Boss, I’m officially on duty in the emergency department today. Your policies really need to lean my way," Liu Banxia said earnestly upon returning to the emergency department.

Shi Lei shot him a glance. "Looks like the director let you off the hook. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be so smug. Wei Yuan was originally scheduled for tonight’s shift, but he swapped with me. You’ll be staying for the night shift too."

"You’re just bullying me! I just finished a night shift. But, being able to accompany you, Boss, is a blessing I couldn’t ask for," Liu Banxia grumbled, quickly putting on a smile when he saw Shi Lei look his way.

This guy... Shi Lei was truly exasperated with him. With such an unconventional personality, he’d probably never change. Still, it wasn’t without its advantages; he could build rapport with patients quickly.

"Boss, I saw Old Qin giving me a funny look earlier. Is he plotting something against me again?" Liu Banxia asked.

"Are you paranoid or something? Enough! Get back to work," Shi Lei glared at him.

What’s the rush? Protecting the weak is our traditional virtue, after all, Liu Banxia mumbled to himself again.

Seeing Shi Lei about to lose his temper, Liu Banxia bolted faster than a rabbit, much to the amusement of the nearby nurses. In fact, many of them looked forward to shifts with Shi Lei and Liu Banxia, as it often provided some entertainment.

"Huh? What are you doing here again?" Liu Banxia asked as he walked over to the triage desk, where he saw Zhou Li chatting with Liang Xiaolin.

"I’m on rotation in the Emergency Department today. It’s not like I came looking for you," Liang Xiaolin retorted, her tone firm.

"I never said you were. So, Cardiothoracic Surgery is sending people for rotations here now too?" Liu Banxia asked curiously.

"No, Chief Director Li told me to come and get more experience," Liang Xiaolin admitted, her voice losing some of its earlier confidence.

What was the real story? Well, despite Liang Xiaolin having been with Li Mingwu for only a few days, he’d already discerned her deficiency in practical skills. Consequently, she was assigned a rotation here, essentially a form of specialized tutoring.

Zhou Li and the others weren’t far off with their guesses. Liang Xiaolin did have connections. However, even with people looking out for her, she still needed to be trained properly. For a surgeon, practical skills were paramount; otherwise, she might as well switch to internal medicine.

If it were anyone else, I wouldn’t care. But this is Liu Banxia! My mental labels for him are ’jerk,’ ’scoundrel,’ ’bad news’... the list goes on.

Liu Banxia didn’t take it personally. Spotting a familiar patient walking in, he immediately went over to greet him.

"Doctor, I’m here for a dressing change," the patient said with a smile.

It was none other than the taxi driver from the car accident on the night Liu Banxia had stopped his bleeding with his bare hands.

"Is everything sorted out with the accident? I checked your diagnostic records when I got back; you didn’t get a CT scan, did you?" Liu Banxia asked.

"I wasn’t feeling dizzy or anything, so I didn’t want to waste the money. The company is helping with the paperwork, but it’ll still take a few days to sort everything out. Thank goodness the young woman and the child are okay. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself for the rest of my life," the taxi driver sighed, his expression despondent.

Liu Banxia could empathize. Although the taxi company would handle things, for now, the man could only rest at home. His future was indeed uncertain.

"Doctor, can I stand while you change the dressing? My hemorrhoids have been acting up the last couple of days," the taxi driver said once they were in the treatment room.

"If you trust me, and your hemorrhoids are severe, you should really consider surgery. Especially since you’re a driver. If they get worse, they could develop into an anal fistula, and that’s even more trouble," Liu Banxia said, then beckoned Liang Xiaolin over.

Liang Xiaolin hesitated for a moment before walking into Treatment Room One.

"You change the patient’s dressing. I’ll supervise," Liu Banxia stated, his tone all business.

Liang Xiaolin wasn’t the type to suffer in silence, but with a patient present, she couldn’t very well lose her temper. Still, she shot him a glare. Chen Hongyang was right about one thing: this guy just loves to act like a big shot.

As Liang Xiaolin unwrapped the gauze, the corner of the taxi driver’s mouth twitched.

I don’t even know what to say, Liu Banxia thought. Are people these days really so bad at handling a little discomfort? Okay, Liang Xiaolin’s practical skills might be a bit lacking, but that’s when it comes to surgery. Changing a dressing is a basic procedure. How painful can removing gauze be?

Looking at the sutures on the patient’s head, Liang Xiaolin felt a renewed sense of frustration. This wasn’t the first time she’d seen his handiwork. She’d even examined the sutures on her own waist at home, and her grandfather himself had praised them as excellent.

How can someone so smug be so good at suturing? It just doesn’t add up.

"This might sting a little when I wipe it. Please try to bear with it," Liang Xiaolin said.

"Don’t worry, Doctor. I can handle a little pain," the taxi driver chuckled.

Liu Banxia frowned. Something felt off.

"Uncle, does that hurt? If it does, tell me, and I’ll chew her out for you," Liu Banxia asked while Liang Xiaolin was cleaning the wound.

"No, it doesn’t. Much better than the doctor who changed it last time. That one really hurt; they were so rough," the taxi driver replied.

"Uncle, have you felt irritable, experienced any chest tightness, or dizziness lately?" Liu Banxia continued.

"No, no. My head’s really fine. No concussion," the taxi driver replied hastily.

Wearing her mask, Liang Xiaolin grimaced. There he goes again, acting like a know-it-all.

"Uncle, just let her continue with the dressing. Now, try to follow my hand with the corner of your eye," Liu Banxia said, then placed his hands on either side of the taxi driver’s head and began to move them slowly.

Liang Xiaolin was annoyed. Is he using this examination as an excuse to get inappropriately close to me? she wondered. She was currently positioned between Liu Banxia and the patient, and his stance made it look almost as if he were embracing her.

Liu Banxia, however, had no such thoughts. He had just performed a quick check and had genuinely found something. The patient’s eyeballs exhibited a horizontal nystagmus. Though the tremor was slight, the symptom was definitely there.

DING! Task Issued: The Patient’s Mouth

Open Task: Patient exhibits twitching at the corner of the mouth. Suspected underlying condition. Host to diagnose. Reward based on diagnostic results.

"Uncle, as soon as this dressing change is done, go get a brain CT scan immediately. You absolutely must. I suspect your brain might have sustained some damage from that collision," Liu Banxia said, withdrawing his hands.

"Doctor, why are you so insistent that I get a CT scan? I’m really fine," the taxi driver said with a bitter laugh.

"Just now, I noticed an involuntary twitch at the corner of your mouth and a slight horizontal nystagmus in your eyes. These two symptoms are enough to suggest that your central nervous system may have been damaged. I can’t be sure if there’s a hematoma in your brain from the collision that’s now pressing on your nerves," Liu Banxia explained seriously.

DING! 10 Experience Points Gained. Diagnostics Skill Proficiency +10.

Liang Xiaolin was stunned. Is he bluffing again? I saw the patient’s mouth twitch too, but wasn’t that just because of the pain?
