Chapter 179: Mischief and Misunderstandings

So that’s why...?

Well, whatever. He wasn’t in a position to judge dark elves. After all, he was just a weak, innocent light elf.

But...

Illiya glanced at the still visibly tangled-up dark elf and the mischievous side buried deep in his heart began to bubble up again.

He really couldn’t be blamed for this, mostly it was because the dark elf just looked so easy to tease.

That’s what Illiya told himself.

Elves were a race that lived very much according to their own whims.

Even a young elf was no exception, and Illiya had naturally inherited this odd little trait perfectly.

"Pushing your luck" was practically a must-know phrase in an elf’s vocabulary.

While it usually applied to situations involving competition for resources or benefits, sometimes it also got applied to one’s own companions.

After all, every elf was the spoiled (tyrant) pet of their team.

That’s just how it was!

Illiya coughed lightly a few times, clearing his throat to ease the tension.

This was also his first time doing something like this, so it was normal to be a little nervous.

"So, you didn’t realize anything and was just planning to brush me off from the very start. As your companion, I’m truly heartbroken." Illiya spoke as he finished, then even dramatically raised a hand to wipe the corner of his eye.

Even though the corner of his eyes weren’t moist and there wasn’t even the slightest trace of redness and even though his acting was so bad it was practically unbearable to watch, he still managed to fool the only audience present.

What Drow couldn’t stand the most was seeing his soul-bonded partner upset, especially when all signs clearly pointed to him being the cause.

That made him even more anxious.

What could he do to make his soul-bonded partner happy again?

Drow fell into deep thought.

He thought carefully for a while, and then he suddenly realized, at this point in time, his soul-bonded partner really didn’t seem to lack anything.

In fact, come to think of it, at any point in time, his soul-bonded partner had never been missing anything, nor had he ever really wanted anything badly.

If he couldn’t rely on external items, then he could only start looking for the problem within himself.

At what point had things started to spiral out of his control...?

It seemed like it was...

"Pfft, Drow, are all dark elves this amusing?" Illiya finally couldn’t take it anymore.

Watching the dark elf’s expression made even his conscience start to ache slightly.

Still young and not yet fully grown, Illiya’s heart was quite soft at this age.

His mischief would never last long, and he couldn’t stand seeing someone fall into such deep thought over a simple joke.

There was no need for that.

He said those words only to put the dark elf at ease.

And the result matched Illiya’s expectations. When Drow heard those words, he visibly relaxed. He wasn’t even sure whether it was because he no longer had to worry about answering the question, or because the elf had actively offered him an out.

Perhaps it was both, or maybe it was just the feeling of slight relief.

After all, being able to see his soul-bonded partner alive, well, and full of energy was the best thing in the world.

With that interruption, Drow no longer felt as flustered as he had before. He followed the ladder that had been offered to him and climbed down gracefully. "Illiya, you’re right about everything."

Only after speaking did Drow realize exactly what he had just said. He quickly tried to patch it up, "But I think I’m the only interesting dark elf. The rest of them are just a bunch of stiff old bores, rigid and formal."

Illiya: ???

Did he hear that right? Was this seemingly innocent dark elf... insulting his own kind?

All for the sake of earning the title of "interesting"?

Truly incomprehensible for a light elf.

Do dark elves even know that their own kind are out here bad-mouthing them?

Really... such strange, strange dark elves.

As for whether or not he had done something wrong, Illiya chose to turn a blind eye and gently let the matter go, pretending as though he had forgotten about it entirely.

Drow, for his part, was quick to catch on. He immediately understood that his soul-bonded partner had no intention of continuing that line of questioning.

Truth be told, people become who they’re surrounded by.

If one didn’t count this life, even in their past life, though Drow hadn’t met Illiya quite this early, their deeper conversations had begun around this same period of time. And back then, Drow had spent a lot of time interacting with light elves.

Even a blank sheet of paper wouldn’t stay white if left in a room full of ink.

That was something Illiya was better off not knowing.

If Illiya ever found out that he had been deceiving him from the very beginning, he’d probably beat him to a pulp right then and there.

Drow silently buried that thought deep within his heart, determined never to utter a single word about it for the rest of this life.

Otherwise, when the reckoning came, he’d be in for one hell of a beating.

With such guilty thoughts on his mind, the dark elf, though long accustomed to hiding emotions couldn’t help himself. The blush on his face didn’t fade at all. In fact, it only grew redder.

Illiya, unaware of the inner turmoil, simply thought that this dark elf was a little thin-skinned.

"I’m guessing, Drow, that you didn’t come all this way just to pat me on the shoulder from behind, right?" Illiya took the initiative to steer the conversation back onto the proper track.

If they kept talking at this pace, the day of the war would arrive and they still wouldn’t have cleared things up.

Once the subject shifted to serious matters, Drow’s expression instantly changed.
