Chapter 164: The Demon King’s Fields

"They said, ’Even if it’s just a wasteland, we must give His Majesty the Demon King the very best!’"

Anos sighed bitterly. "And with words like that, what could I say? I had no choice but to let them do it."

Illiya: "..."

You really do have it rough.

After hearing Anos’s explanation, Illiya was momentarily stunned—but only for a moment.

What shocked him wasn’t the farmland, but rather how much the demons truly doted on their king.

They were just cultivating a patch of land, and yet they went as far as to pave roads between fields using the same materials as the Demon Palace’s flooring?

As someone who wasn’t a demon, Illiya had to apologize—he truly didn’t understand the demon race’s way of thinking.

Were they afraid the Demon King might one day stroll through the fields on foot?

That thought alone almost made Illiya laugh.

In reality, he felt it made no difference whether they paved the roads or not.

He was almost certain that the demon subordinates who constantly indulged the king had absolutely no intention of letting their beloved Demon King ever personally step into the fields.

Even if such an opportunity arose, they would still go out of their way to prevent His Majesty the Demon King from stepping foot into the fields.

His Majesty the Demon King deserves only the best. How could they possibly allow him to work the fields himself? That would be a complete failure of their duties.

Most likely, every demon would have that same thought—without exception.

In a way, as an elf, Illiya had come to understand demons quite deeply.

The exact reasons were better left unsaid, but to summarize: when two miserable races look down on each other, it turns out that your enemy often understands you the best.

Of course, this was not something Illiya would ever mention in front of Anos, His Majesty the Demon King. And the silent approval from people like Sebastian for Illiya to follow along was, in a way, a form of agreement.

Anos was still someone who hadn’t fully stepped into his role as Demon King—he had yet to turn into the shameless, thick-skinned scoundrel he might one day become.

In this moment, he was completely unaware of the rather outrageous thoughts running through the mind of the blond elf standing next to him.

As the person involved, he was still enthusiastically explaining the origins of this farmland.

Anos said, "I’ve looked into the data. There are areas in the Demon Realm where the land is actually quite suitable for cultivating crops. If it succeeds, that would mean we wouldn’t need to keep importing from other regions. Plus, it would save the Demon Realm a huge amount of money."

"I told you before about the Demon Realm’s history. Back then, people here couldn’t be bothered to fight with the armies of the continent, so they just handed over supplies as spoils of war to the other side. That’s not acceptable. Sure, I wasn’t around at the time, so they could do whatever they wanted. But now that I’m the Demon King, I refuse to be the big sucker handing out free resources. I may have been human before, but now I’m a demon."

"And besides, isn’t it almost time for the once-every-fifty-years war? The Demon Realm needs to appear vibrant and prosperous. We need to give the outsiders a surprise, don’t you think?"

Illiya turned in mild surprise to look at Anos, who was still talking to himself.

No matter how soft-hearted he might be now, the fact remained—he was still a demon.

But now, Anos was finally beginning to show the qualities expected of a Demon King.

This was the image of a demon that the elves were familiar with.

Illiya felt quietly pleased.

If that’s the case, then giving things a little push in the right direction... didn’t seem like such a bad idea.

He didn’t think long. Within three seconds, Illiya had made his decision.

He subtly moved a little closer to the Demon King, shortening the distance between them—not as far apart as before.

"What I’m about to say next shouldn’t affect you too much, right?" Illiya’s expression was still perfectly calm, showing no trace of the guilty pleasure he felt at fanning the flames.

"The human nations on the continent are divided into three alliances and five countries. There’s Areuseon Kingdom, which established diplomatic ties with the Demon Realm a hundred years ago, so there’s no need to worry about them. If you meet anyone from Areuseon Kingdom during the once-every-fifty-years war, just avoid them appropriately. Then there’s Haerim Kingdom, Dalhae Kingdom, Yaguk Theocracy, Georyun Kingdom, the Baekrim League, the Mumyeong Alliance, and the Nubilian Union. The Nubilian Union won’t participate in the coming war—those people only care about money. If they can’t profit from it, they won’t get involved."

"In truth, you only need to pay attention to Yaguk Theocracy."

Illiya laid out an analysis of the major powers participating in the Accord, ruling out those who could be ignored and highlighting those that required caution.

Anos had already been given a general breakdown of the continent by his steward, so he knew the basics. But what he didn’t understand was—why did Illiya single out Yaguk Theocracy?

He searched his memory for information about that nation, but nothing particularly noteworthy came to mind.

Yaguk Theocracy was built atop snowy mountains and remained cold all year round.

Perhaps due to the climate, its people were known for being cold and meticulous.

To summarize, the people of Yaguk Theocracy were widely regarded as aloof and difficult to approach.

But what was so dangerous about them?

Anos was confused.

So he asked outright.

Illiya wasn’t surprised at all—he had expected this question.

To be honest, anyone familiar with Yaguk Theocracy would know that because the country was remote and its people were introverted, they rarely involved themselves in power struggles.

For something like the once-every-fifty-years war, how could Yaguk Theocracy possibly be a major player?
