Chapter 290: Provoking her

"Of course, they will not sit still." Ahmar frowned when he saw the attitude of Lady Evelyn’s family. He had no idea who had stirred them into causing trouble for them, but he was certain that he would find them very soon, and once he found them, he would never let those bastards off.

He paused and then continued, "But there is no need for you to worry about such things. We have dealt with the elders of the court and we can certainly deal with Lady Evelyn. Worst-case scenario, they will drag us to the council, but as long as we can prove that Lady Evelyn willingly changed her mind, everything will be fine."

"I have already sent a few mages to look for evidence; sooner or later, we will find something. There is nothing to worry about, your majesty."

That was what they said, but Bree suddenly felt tainted, as if something evil had snuck into her body and ruined her once pure and pristine body. She raised her hand and nursed the rising headache.

Seeing her reactions, both Ahmar and Blaise were worried. This was what they were worried about. They knew that Bree would not take this news well. She was someone who cared more than she showed, and now that she had suddenly become a threat to everyone around her, who knows how she would react?

"I will abdicate the throne." After a long battle with herself, Bree decided to step down from the throne and give up the position of empress to someone else, presumably someone from a distant family.

"Your majesty!"

"I am afraid that this is not possible, your majesty."

"I understand that it makes you feel unjustified as you all mated with the queen, but I am in no position to continue working as the queen anymore." What if she lost her temper again and hurt someone? That was something that Bree didn’t want to see or do.

It was better to cut the losses short before things went out of control.

"Do you really think we would let you go?"

"You are the only queen of this nation, and no one else is fit to rule over Dragonire."

Totally baffled, she looked at the two men and shook her head. "You did see what I did last night, right? And you still wish me to stay and rule?"

"What I saw was someone fighting—fighting for the pride that has been stepped on. You did everything that you could to make Lady Evelyn stop when she had the time, Your Majesty. But it was the foolishness of that woman that led the situation to escalate. Even though your dragon has been impacted due to the remnants of the drugs, you never allowed it to kill Lady Evelyn, even though that woman had humiliated and tried to embarrass you by saying pointless things."

Blaise smiled and agreed with Ahmar. "The second consort is right, your majesty. Your dragon shifting to her instinctive side was still a lot more tamed than other shifters."

"Tamed? I thought I was going to kill her."

"But you didn’t, which means something," Ahmar said to Bree, and when he saw her continue frowning, he spoke in a firm voice, "We are not going to let you, your highness."

"You cannot hold me back if I want to go. Look, I understand that this is something that you cannot hold back from, but there is no way you can stop my condition from worsening. I am giving you a quick way out such that it would not hurt you, either of you. When I am too far gone, what are you going to do? My dragon will sooner or later lose its mind. If she turns chaotic, there will be only one thing that you can do for me."

"You know that, right? Do you think you will be able to withstand the loss of your mate?"

"And do you think that the situation will get better if you leave, your majesty?" Blaise asked with the tilt of his head. "If that’s what you think, you are wrong."

"You will be fine," Bree replied through gritted teeth.

"Physically, yes, since you will take all the pain, but emotionally? We will be a wreck without you. Do you think that we would have held back till now if we wanted to leave you? You are more than just our mate, Your Majesty. You are the essence of our soul; if you take away the essence, just think what would be left of us?"

The very idea of them turning into living ghouls made her heart ache. But she didn’t want to hold these men back because of her.

"You will survive as long as you get another mate."

"So you are giving up?"

Her eyes flared up. Bree raised her head and looked at the man with a glint in her eyes as she questioned, "What was that about?"

Ahmar was amused when he saw that the woman was angry, but he was glad that she was angry; at least now it would be easier to manipulate her.

He curled his lips and said to her, "You are giving up. Never thought that you were such a scaredy cat, your majesty. You actually gave up so easily; I thought that you had more strength, but it seemed like I overestimated you."

"How dare you!" Bree slipped off the bed with her eyes burning with rage. "You are calling me a coward? Do you even know how hard this is for me? I am just trying to do what’s good for everyone. How dare you judge me when you don’t even know what I am going through? You have no idea what I am going through."

"There is no need for you to say so many unnecessary words, your majesty. I understand if you can no longer fight this. If you are tempted to let go, then I guess we have no choice but to declare that you didn’t have the spirit—"
