Chapter 267: Don’t flirt with me

"You should try to keep the head maid in her place, Your Majesty." Now sitting in the carriage, Blaise stared at her even though he had an entire window to himself for looking out.

"Hmm? It’s too much of a bother." Bree replied carelessly, causing the man to narrow his eyes and look at her as if she were trying to hide something.

He clicked his tongue and straightened up in his seat. With his arms crossed in front, he said to Bree, "Lying is a bad habit for a queen like you, Your Majesty."

"Who says I am lying?" Bree questioned back. Though she was, being caught made her cheeks burn.

"You have a little tell; every time you lie, I can catch it." Blaise replied smoothly, causing Bree to narrow her eyes and ask, "What kind of tell?"

"Your majesty, do I look stupid?" Blaise retorted with a roll of his eyes. "Why will I tell you the truth? If I let you know, you will only learn how to lie better. As your mate, I cannot allow that to happen, can I?"

Bree’s lips twitched. She knew that this man was not going to tell her the truth.

She raised her hand and rubbed her forehead with a little annoyance.

"Now, tell me. Why don’t you stop the head maid from stepping out of her lines?"

Because she knew the things that the head maid had done for Bree Dragniere. When Bree was born, the king wanted to kill her because she was the only one who was born with the dragon flame other than his precious son. He was worried that Bree would inherit the ’pure’ half and thus refused to let her leave another day. It was the head maid who hid her in time and used her own title as a means to stop the late emperor from killing Bree.

The head maid clearly had a decree that she could use to save her life and escape but she used it on Bree and gave her a chance to survive. However, that made the head maid a target of bullying by the other maids. Even the emperor forcefully made her his bed servant and tormented her.

Though the head maid never showed it on her face, the fact that she refused to marry a man was enough proof that the emperor had left a really deep scar on her heart.

What was more, it was further elaborated in the book that when Bree died, only the head maid was one of the few who refused to believe that Bree was dead and slowly went crazy.

The head maid might be a simple background character but Bree knew how much she had given up for the original Bree. She even suffered torment in the hands of the emperor, all for the sake of Bree, and that torment left a scar and marked the head maid in ways that she could not explain.

So how could Bree stop that old woman from nagging? Maybe in the eyes of the old head maid, she had long become her daughter that she couldn’t have. All that old woman did was nag her so she could silently listen to what the head maid had to say. It wasn’t as if she was going to lose an inch of her skin if she was to listen to the head maid.

The reason why the head maid was trying so hard to get her ’fixed’ was because Bree was not in a good place, thus she had resorted to using drugs. Maybe the head maid was trying to give Bree a home and get her settled in ways that would make her happy.

Of course Bree didn’t like the overprotectiveness of the head maid, as if she was worried that Bree would fall into the same rhythm but then again she couldn’t tell the poor woman that the Bree she cared so much for was dead, right? So she had taken up the task of letting the head maid fuss over her to make up for the loss that she had suffered without even knowing.

But of course, in return, Bree felt stifled. Even Saphira didn’t like the head maid’s attitude because she knew and sensed Bree’s helplessness and depression of never being treated as her own person.

Though she had taken over the body of Bree Dragniere, Bree knew that she was not the one head maid cared for.

But then again, she didn’t plan on sharing the truth with Blaise. She knew that the second these men found out that she was not the woman they were mated to, they would kill her horribly. Maybe Blaise would even hide her away and then dissect her body to find out how another soul could take over someone’s body.

So she simply responded to Blaise’s question with an excuse, "That’s because I don’t want to make her angry when she is at such an age."

Of course Blaise didn’t believe a thing that came out of that pretty little mouth because he knew those lips were good liars. But he didn’t want to push Bree too hard, as he could sense that there was an air of melancholy around her.

He then changed his tactic and asked, "Are you always this kind to the elderly, your majesty?"

"Maybe? If they are kind to me."

"Will you be kind to me if I were to treat you kindly?"

Bree turned to look at the man with her eyes flickering. "I am not good with this."

"Good with what?" Blaise asked with a confused gaze.

"Flirting," Bree replied as she picked up a sunfruit and brought it to her lips but just as she peeled the thing and placed the pulp in her mouth, it was snatched from her hand. "HEY!"

"You are not brushing me away, Your Majesty," Blaise said as he placed the fruit on the small table at the side of the carriage. He knew that his mate was uncomfortable and was trying to avoid the conversation but if she was to eat this fruit, then Blaise had no idea how his body would react.

Because every time Bree ate sunfruits, she would lick her fingers in the most erotic way possible.
