Chapter 252: Jackal shifter

’I never expected this to happen,’ Bree looked at the seals that were placed in front of her, her eyes wide with shock. She knew that the officials would be moved when they heard that Yakov also gave up on his title of duke and chancellor but she never thought that the response would be this intense and supportive.

It was as if the officials were rushing to see who would submit their insignia and seal first to her.

"Your majesty, are you alright?" Blaise asked with a charming smile on his lips.

And Bree, who snapped out of her daze, raised her head and looked at the man who had appeared out of nowhere. Even now she was yet to find out the reason why Blaise was here and why he suddenly blocked her when she was returning to her office.

"Third consort," Bree started with a calm voice. "What are you doing here?"

"Aww, are you saying that I cannot come to see you if there is nothing wrong, your majesty?" Blaise teased her but Bree simply raised her brows at him, which left the man to roll his eyes at her. If not for the fact that he was her husband, Bree really wanted to give the orders to have him sent to the torture chambers.

This man really knew how to step on her toes.

"I can see that you are not really pleased to see me," Blaise walked over and settled himself on the arm of her chair. Bree wondered how this mountain of a man was able to settle himself on the tiny armrest, which should have snapped the second he even placed his bum on it.

Bree ignored his looming presence and responded, "I never said that; I was just asking you a normal question. You have been locked up in the tower of magic for weeks and I heard that you didn’t even have the time to come and sleep at your own palace. So, it makes me wonder what made you come here all of a sudden?"

Blaise bent his head and placed his mouth next to her ear. If not for his excellent control, he would have groaned then and there as her scent started to furl around him. Dear lord, help him; he had never thought that Bree ever smelled divine but at that moment she did. She smelled so warm and sweet, like his favourite apple pie, cinnamon rolls with a dash of hot chocolate with marshmallows.

A sweet delight that made his length thicken with greed and desire. What were the chances of him getting locked up in the prison if he were to take her right here and now? Maybe very high but he was willing to take the risk.

"I was trying to see through the traces of the dark mages as well as busy examining the drugs that were given to you. I felt really upset over the fact that you were drugged right under my nose and I had no idea what was going on with you, your majesty. It really nicked my pride a bit there."

Bree could understand what he was trying to say. "Why are you hovering over me?" She tried to shoo him away but the man simply smiled at her as if he found her antics cute.

"What’s wrong, your majesty? Does my presence make you nervous or something?"

Of course it does.

"No, why would it?"

"Then you don’t need to worry about me sitting here, right?" Blaise said with a charming smile, which made her narrow her eyes at him. But Bree knew better than to try and make this man move, so she simply gave up.

"Your majesty, Lord Caisen and the rest have also —" Dion paused when he entered the office and saw Blaise sitting right next to Bree; he blinked his eyes, not knowing whether to continue or not.

"Go on, don’t think too much about him," Bree told him and Dion nodded even though it was really hard with Blaise eyeing him as if he was trying to find which move to make that would kill him in a matter of seconds and in the cleanest way possible.

"Dion?" Bree called out to him when he didn’t say anything and looked up at Blaise, who was staring at her assistant. She pinched him on the back of his hand and said to him, "Don’t go around scaring my assistant now."

Blaise raised a brow when he saw how protective Bree was of this little assistant; however, he still pulled his gaze away from Dion. but in return he draped his arm over the back of the chair and laid a possessive hand over Bree’s shoulder. Noticing the move, Dion simply smiled.

Though he adored and loved the empress, his feelings for her were perfectly platonic, as he had been following her since she was a child. First as her study mate and then as her assistant when she grew up. She was more like a sister to him than a lover.

"I was saying that Lord Caisen has dropped off his seal but his son asked me what kind of preparations they need to make for this exam, which will be held in three months time?" Dion asked.

And that was when Bree realised that she also needed to prepare for a set of topics that could be counted as the syllabus for the official preparation of the exams and unlike those hell raisers who wrote one thing in the syllabus and gave questions from another topic under the pretext that one should have been sensible enough to prepare that one topic as well—Bree was going to be careful.

"Tell them that within a week they would receive a notice about the preparations as well," Bree turned to look at Blaise, who smiled at her upon noticing that she seemed to be teetering on the verge of asking for help.

"And one more thing," Blaise frowned when Dion took the attention that Bree had given to him, thinking of whether to send this man crying back to his maker. "We found traces of Jackal shifters around the southern border as well as the palace. It seems like they were trying to enter the palace but unfortunately failed."
