Chapter 246: The Hiding Wolf
Bang.
The sound of everything falling and scattering over the floor echoed in the room, followed by the ugly clattering of something breaking and shattering into pieces.
Aileen, who stood on the side, winced when he saw Yakov lose his temper. He dared not make a noise as he looked at his master, who seemed really angry.
However, there was someone who was daring enough to poke the raging tiger in the nose.
"Is this how you should be welcoming your father?" Lord Sceptre questioned calmly as he picked up the teacup on the table and blew over the chamomile tea.
Yakov raised his head. His gaze slowly turned to the couch where his father was sitting and he questioned, "Just—what do you think you are doing here, father?"
Lord Sceptre didn’t move his head; instead he simply opened his eyes that were closed and glanced at his son. Despite the dominant alpha vibes that were being released by Yakov, Lord Sceptre remained completely unfazed. He responded, "I came here because I had something important to talk to you about. However, before I could even begin, you started acting like a child throwing a tantrum. Is this how I taught you to act?"
"As the first consort, you need to be calm and collected all the time. What kind of pathetic teen actions are these?"
"I used to act like this when I was 17, do you know that?"
Yakov ignored the jab and straightened his body. He looked at the elderly man sitting on the couch with flickering eyes and said to him, "Why are you here? Just tell me. There is no need to beat around the bush."
Seeing that he was not in the mood to be teased, Lord Sceptre sighed. He placed the teacup down before saying to Yakov in a sombre voice, "The spies from the southern cities have sent information. The shifters with half-blood have suddenly gone missing."
He paused before adding, "Including your brother."
Yakov had never met with this illegitimate son of his father for his mother had never accepted the mistress and her son, threatening to break the mating bond if her father dared to bring the woman to their house and disrupt the family peace.
Because of this, Lord Sceptre had no choice but to send the mother and son to the southern city. Though that place was not as developed as the capital, at least it was a quiet city with all the necessities. The only flaw was that it was a month’s distance away from the capital.
"Why are you telling me this?" Yakov asked with a hint of contempt in his eyes. "Do you miss your illegitimate son? Want me to look for him? But I am sorry, the imperial army doesn’t have the time to look for a half-blood bastard."
"Yakov!" Lord Sceptre banged his fist on the armrest as he stood up. "Have you forgotten that half of the blood that flows in the veins of that boy is mine?"
"That’s why I called him a half-blood bastard," Yakov sneered. "A man who cheated on his mate and gave her the pain of the weakening of the mating bond. If he is not a bastard, who is he?"
Lord Sceptre: "..."
With a harsh exhale, Lord Sceptre closed his eyes and then said to his son, "I have told you many times that it is not what you—" he paused before shaking his head and said to his son, "Alright, there is no point in talking about the past."
He opened his eyes with a solemn look in them. "I didn’t bring up this matter in front of you for no reason. And no, I don’t wish to search for that boy—" he sighed before explaining the reason for his visit. "You might not be aware of this but—the places where these people disappeared, there were traces of black magic left."
This caught Yakov’s attention as he questioned sharply, "They were kidnapped?"
"I am afraid not." Lord Sceptre placed his hands behind his back and started pacing in the office. "There was no sign of struggle, which means that these shifters left willingly."
Lord Sceptre’s words brought a chill within the room; even though there was a fire burning in the fireplace, the entire room was filled with a kind of chill that made people cold to the bones.
"They left willingly?" Yakov repeated, his eyes moving as countless possibilities surged in his mind. "He is back...isn’t he?"
Though his entire existence refused to believe that the late prince was back, the signs told him otherwise.
"I cannot be sure." Without evidence, Lord Sceptre dared not make such an outrageous speculation but just like Yakov, he also believed that Semel was back again.
The last time the dark mages and the half shifters were this active was when Semel was backing them.
If not for the fact that he had sent a bunch of spies to keep an eye on the mother-and-son pair, Lord Sceptre would have never detected anything amiss. But because he had been keeping an eye on that woman who schemed against him years ago, he knew that something was wrong the second that boy went missing and immediately sent a few people to investigate.
A good thing too or else they would have been unaware of these small changes. After all, who cared about the illegitimate children? At the end of the day, the shifters would return to their mates.
And these children would be thrown aside by them along with their mothers.
Yakov pinched the space between his brows as he said to his father, "I understand. You can leave now; I will discuss this matter with her majesty."
It seemed like the situation was getting out of control slowly. If the half-shifters were joining Semel and the dark mages, then it could only mean one thing—they were planning to usurp the throne.
Yakov clenched his fists and hurried out of the office; he needed to discuss this matter with Bree as soon as possible.
