Recommended song for the waltz dance—- When I fall in love by Neil Wolfe.
The orchestra drew one final note as Blaise retracted his spell and let Bree’s feet touch the glossy platform at the centre of the room, no sooner did the first dance ended the nobles surrounding them slowly went up on the stage and started to dance as the orchestra moved on to the second song of the night.
" Do you want to dance some more, your majesty?" asked Blaise as he twirled Bree for one last time before placing his hand on her waist. " This song is very good as well."
" There is no need," said Bree as she gasped for breath and then shook her head, she was someone who hardly ever exercised asking her to dance was similar to asking her to run a five hundred kilometres marathons. Her poor stamina could not withstand it! " I am fine with this much, let’s get down from here."
The smell of perfumes and after washes were making her nose all clogged up. It would be truly annoying if she died of suffocation with all the strong scents that were covering the entire dance floor.
" As you wish your majesty," said Blaise as they weaved their way out of the dance floor, because everyone was busy with their dance and partners, neither of them paid any attention to the two of them. Which was a good thing given that Bree didn’t want to talk to anyone of them, the two of them walked out of the dance floor carefully making sure that they do not knock into anyone waltzing on the floor.
" You can breathe now, your majesty," said Blaise as he helped Bree to a corner that was less crowded. " I bet the strong scent of perfumes wouldn’t bother you anymore."
The more dominant a shifter was their senses were just as strong, unlike the nobles whose blood was less concentrated given that their ancestors had mated with humans to survive, Bree’s bloodline was a lot pure and sometimes pure bloodline created trouble, like just now. Blaise looked at Bree who was holding her breath because she was being suffocated by all kinds of scents being mixed at the same time.
" Oh yes," Bree exhaled as she took a breath of fresh air or as fresh as she could get given that she was surrounded by nobles all of the kinds, with varying scents.
"Has the first dance finished?" asked a new voice catching Bree by surprise she almost jumped in fright but then she paused and turned around to look at the man who has crept behind her when she wasn’t paying attention. " First consort, you scared me, why did you have to creep behind me like this?"
Yakov raised a brow as he looked down at her with a smile playing on his face, for the sake of the occasion he has dawned on a bottle green long tail suit with an ascot tie and a monocle. He looked rather dashing, especially with the smile on his face, Bree noticed quite a few women turning to look at him before looking away afraid that they will be caught by the dragon queen.
" I didn’t mean to scare you, your majesty," said Yakov calmly as he turned around slowly and stood next to her, his shoulder touching hers. " I simply thought that if I was to stroll inside the ballroom from the front door then it will attract unnecessary attention that is why I decided to come through the back door but of course, they checked me thoroughly. If I didn’t know it better, I would have thought that they were checking for magic bombs."
His words weren’t spoken in a light tone and were easily picked up by the nobles who were standing close to them, they all exchanged a look with each other before swallowing hard and then moved away from the spot where they were standing, they didn’t have to be a genius to understand that the First consort was furious.
Even the Duke who was chatting with the Marquis of the neighbouring territory felt a chill crawling up his back when he heard Yakov’s words, oh dear, it was better for their plan to succeed as soon as possible or else he was worried that things will get out of control.
" Excuse me," he smiled at the Marquis with whom he was having a conversation before he turned to walk towards his aide. He was hiding in a hidden corner while tapping on the communitap, a mana stone device that was slightly similar to a messaging device, trying to call the shadow guards who were responsible for bringing the mermaid’s blood and drugging the Dragon Queen.
" What’s going on?" Though he was smiling, Duke Cilantro’s aide could hear the venom dripping from his voice, he wasn’t just furious, he was beyond the range of being in control. " Where are the guards that you have arranged?"
The aide too was trying to reach the two of them but no matter how much he tried to call the two men, they weren’t responding to him at all. " My lord that...." He began but then he paused when he saw the two servers walking through the crowd serving drinks, he sharply exhaled before turning to look at the Duke as he said, " They are here, you see that my lord, everything is going just as you planned."
The aide cheekily smiled before sneaking away just in time to get to the two guards who were weaving through the crowd. Wine glasses and whiskey in their hands as they walked back and forth before coming to a stop in front of the aide who came to a halt in front of them, arms crossed and everything as he tilted his head to a corner and said, " Can I talk with the two of you?"
The two servers looked at each other before nodding their heads as they walked after the aide who came to a sudden stop once they were out of the ballroom and out on the balcony, no sooner did the two servers walk out, did the aide turn around and hissed at the two of them with a snarl, " Where the hell you two were? Huh? Can’t you see that the Duke has been getting impatient with each minute? What were you thinking coming this late, didn’t I tell you that you two need to be here as quickly as possible? What? Did you think that we are holding this ball for fun here huh?"
" We did come here as quickly as possible, but then we were caught by the knights of the queen," said one of the servers once the aide of the Duke stopped speaking. " They asked us to show what we were serving and it was rather difficult to get away from them."
" Exactly, you have no idea how difficult it was for us to sneak the things that you asked us to bring for the queen, if we were caught then we could have died then and there," said the other server as he pointed out the severity of the situation. " We just got away from the knights and that is why we were late."
Listening to the words of the two guards, blood drained from the face of the aide as he turned to look left and right with his hand pressing against his temple as he shook his head and said, " Were you caught? Don’t tell me that you made them doubt you or something of the sort because if you do then you might as well tell me now, I will get you two out of the place and you can stay underground for as long as this situation lasts, all right?"
" We are fine the knights weren’t able to find anything," said the first server as he opened his mouth to show something to the aide but the latter hurriedly asked him to close his mouth and said, "Are you out of your mind, what are you doing what if someone sees you huh?"
Then he turned to look at the other server and said solemnly, " If you two are here, then what are you waiting for? Go and do the thing that you were asked to, don’t make a mistake all right?"
" We won’t," the two servers nodded and then walked back inside the ballroom while the aide tugged at his clothes and looked left and right before he too took a step forward to go back inside the ballroom but before he could do that something came flying towards him from behind and embedded itself deep in the back of his neck, causing him to stumble as he raised his hand and touched the back of his neck—— something pointy was sticking out of his flesh and that was the last thought he had in his mind before he was knocked out cold.
A small squirrel jumped from the tree behind him and then tottered close to the man before tilting its head, then it snorted and spat a greenish liquid on the face of the man turning him into a mess of gooey, wobbly pile of goo at once.
