Chapter 143: The secret is out

Shock was the first thing that registered in her head as she stared at Yakov, she couldn’t believe that he actually said something like ’ I am only good at taking care of you, your majesty,’ should she take it as him flirting with her? With her eyes locked on his face, Bree blinked her eyes and asked, " Are you trying to romance me?"

Yakov picked up the porcelain bottle and brought it to her lips before he smiled and answered, " It depends on whether or not it’s working, your majesty." He very calmly hooker his fingers around her neck and lifted her head slightly from his lap as he further asked, " Is it working?"

" I am afraid it’s not," answered Bree without any hesitation causing Yakov’s lips to twitch. " I guessed as much, now please open your mouth... it’s a little bitter so, please be careful."

Bree wasn’t scared of bitter medicines, so she parted her lips for Yakov to pour the clear, white liquid into her mouth but as soon as it touched the tip of her tongue, Bree felt that putting it as —— ’just a little bitter was putting it lightly,’ the medicine was so bitter that it would have beaten the bitterness of a hundred bitter guards with just one drop. Ignoring the pain in her body, she immediately sat up and coughed out as the bitter medicine slipped down her throat.

" You call that just a little bitter," she glared at Yakov as she coughed and sputtered, the medicine was downright nasty all right.

" What can I say, you torn open your muscles and ligaments when you didn’t shift properly, there is nothing I can do," Yakov got up from the bed and then headed to the cabinet next to the study table as he placed the porcelain bottle back at its place before turning around and looking at Bree. " If you want quick results then you will have to take medicine as bitter as that, haven’t you heard your majesty? The bitter the medicine, the more effective it is. What’s more, repairing torn muscles is a very difficult task."

And so was taking the medicine but Bree had no other choice, she slumped down on the bed and let out a groan as she shook her head and said, " Just kill me all right, this is just too much!"

Yakov heard her whining and his lips slightly curled up, he has never seen the queen acting like a child before but he has to say that he didn’t dislike it either. She looked much cuter this way at least more than usual when she was glaring at him or others as if they owed her a debt that needed to be paid in just a few months. " You will be all right your majesty, the medicine might be bitter but it starts to work instantly."

Bree did feel her muscles easing up a little as she stared at the ceiling with the lotus-shaped lanterns. " What happened though, how come I am hurt like this?"

Yakov wasn’t surprised by her question at all, when a shifter let his or her beast take over their body, their consciousness would shut down and replace by that of their beasts. It was only when their bodies were perfectly in sync that their consciousness would be intact but Bree shifted into her half-humanoid form giving Saphira control of her body, surely she will have some memories missing from her mind. He picked up an apple from the fruit ball that was resting on his table and started to peel it as he asked, " What do you remember your majesty? I can relay to you what happened after you lost your consciousness."

" I ...I remember seeing a big mountain-like thing popping out of nowhere, and then my body got hotter and hotter before I knew it I was feeling feverish," Bree furrowed her brows as she tried to remember everything that happened before she lost her consciousness. " I saw you rushing at the monster and I saw a young knight bravely sacrificing his life, and that’s all I can remember before my mind turned dizzy and I fainted."

" You did not faint your majesty," said Yakov as he carefully cut the peeled apple into pieces and placed them on a plate. " Your highness, Saphira took over your body, maybe it was because of the weakened state of your body but she couldn’t shift properly...so the two of you were stuck in a half human and half beast form. Something like this is dangerous for a shifter, it is fine if it’s just a partial shifting but in case you were to use the powers of your beast to the best of their abilities then something like muscle tearing is common. Of course, since you didn’t shift properly your bones snapped out of their places as well, they might be snapping back in place as we speak."

As soon as he said that, there was a loud pop of a bone setting in place and Yakov smiled gently, " You see?" Then he came to stand next to the bed and picked up a piece of apple before sitting down on the edge of the bed again. " We don’t have any desserts at the moment, so please make do with it, your majesty."

" Is it poisoned?" asked Bree as she looked at Yakov with a slightly suspicious look, causing the latter to shake his head and take a bite of the apple. He chewed and swallowed down the apple while relishing the sweetness followed by the crunchiness and said, " There you go, your majesty. If I would have poisoned it then surely I wouldn’t have taken a bite of them, and surely within such a small period, I cannot poison anything." He paused and then added with a soft caress of his finger on her forehead. " And I am no longer interested in killing you, your majesty... I have realised you are much good to me when alive."

" You have, haven’t you?" Bree was slightly relieved that he was willing to say such words, as far as she knew Yakov have never really broken his word, so if he said that he wasn’t interested in killing her surely he must have given up the plan. Now, at least she will be able to live comfortably without worrying about Yakov coming up with another scheme to knock her life out of her body. " I too will suggest that you give up on doing such a thing after all I am a very good person! You wouldn’t be able to live with yourself if you were to kill me."

" Absolutely right your majesty," with a smile that was both doting and humorous, Yakov picked up a slice of apple and brought it to Bree’s lips. " You are indeed a very good person, killing you will make me sad..." that’s why I am going to make you solely mine until you can no longer live without me.

Bree took a bite of the apple completely unaware of what was going on in Yakov’s head as she munched on the apple and nodded, " That’s right, see I knew you were a smart man." She patted the back of his hand missing the dark glint that was rising in Yakov’s eyes.

At first, he was just doubtful but now that he was looking at his wife, he couldn’t help but affirm his doubts. This person, she was completely different from the one he knew because the previous dragon Queen would have never cared about the life and death of a knight she didn’t even know, nor would she have put herself in danger if they were to fail in protecting themselves.

Even if it was against her instincts, she would have stayed put and watched them all die without a flicker in her eyes but today she came to save them.

" Your majesty, what I don’t understand is that..." with his eyes carefully trained on Bree, Yakov picked another piece of apple and brought it to her mouth before asking, " Earlier you said that it was nothing but a test, so how come to your body weakened to this state? Shouldn’t you have just pretended to drink if you were testing us?"

As soon as his words fell, Bree felt her throat clog up as she coughed the bite of the apple that she has taken before turning to look at Yakov and saying, "Tha...That is of course to make my act look real...what else? I wanted to make sure that neither of you catch on to my act what else... I am a pretty serious actress after all."

"So you even gave, Lord Benedict a part of the river of Chorals to reign?" asked Yakov with a sharp glint in his eyes.

" Umm...yeah, I mean I have to act as a tyrant so of course, I did whatever I thought was right."

Got you. Yakov fed Bree the last piece of the apple on the plate and smiled with a slightly maniacal look in his eyes—— Lord Benedict never asked for the river of Chorals.
