Chapter 256: Chapter 106 Jail_4
Tonger jumped with fright, thinking Jiang Li had been bullied inside, and quickly said, "Miss... Miss, what’s wrong with you?"
It seemed that it was only upon hearing Tonger’s call that Jiang Li’s spirit returned. She looked at Tonger, seemed to be in a daze for a moment, and then slowly said, "It’s nothing, let’s go back to the residence." She took the fence from Bai Xue’s hand, put it on herself, and started walking forward on her own.
Bai Xue and Tonger were very worried, but since they were outside, it was not appropriate to ask too many questions. They could only follow Jiang Li and hurry back in the direction of the Ye Residence. Even though they did not know what had happened to Jiang Li at Cherish Flower Tower, it was clear that she was deeply shocked and dispirited and distracted.
In a neighboring house of the Ye Residence, Lu Jiu sat on a long rattan chair in the room, and across from him on the couch, Jih Heng was flipping through a book nonchalantly.
Wen Ji entered the room from outside and greeted, "My lord."
Jih Heng said, "Speak."
"Miss Jiang the Second has gone to Cherish Flower Tower again," Wen Ji reported.
Lu Jiu looked at Wen Ji, while Jih Heng’s gaze did not move away from the page of her book, and she casually asked, "Did she go to see that Miss Qiongzhi again?"
"Exactly," Wen Ji hesitated for a moment before saying, "There’s something strange. I discovered that after Miss Jiang the Second saw Qiongzhi, when she came out of Cherish Flower Tower, something must have happened, she seemed dispirited and distracted."
Jih Heng stopped flipping her book, and a hint of surprise flashed across Lu Jiu’s face.
"Dispirited and distracted?" Jih Heng asked.
"Yes, after coming out of Cherish Flower Tower, Miss Jiang the Second, accompanied by two maidservants, headed back to the Ye Family. Along the way, she took many wrong turns, obviously not having her mind on this, and later, seeing the maidservants looking very anxious, it should be that Miss Jiang the Second was behaving unusually," Wen Ji replied in detail.
Lu Jiu couldn’t help but ask, "What exactly did she say to Qiongzhi? Can’t find out anything?"
"No, we can’t," Wen Ji said helplessly. "This Miss Qiongzhi is very guarded and extremely smart, and none of those sent to gather information have been able to pry open her mouth. Since you, my lord, did not allow us to use force, we still don’t know what Miss Jiang the Second and Miss Qiongzhi actually talked about."
Wen Ji really had no idea what to do; Miss Jiang the Second seemed naive and cheerful, yet was very thorough in everything she did. It wasn’t good that the one she dealt with was Qiongzhi from Cherish Flower Tower, the most difficult to handle. Since childhood, Qiongzhi had been in places of pleasure, with no desire for someone to redeem her, almost having no weaknesses. There is a saying, ’Where there’s no desire, there will be no vulnerability.’ Qiongzhi had no desires, so nothing could move her. With Jih Heng forbidding them from using harsh methods on Qiongzhi, they simply could not find a way to get her to talk.
It was clear that Miss Jiang the Second had intentionally sought out such a tough nut to crack.
"We don’t need to know what they said," Jih Heng said. "We’ll see what she does."
"My lord, do you know what Miss Jiang the Second is going to do?" Lu Jiu asked.
Lu Jiu was also a very smart person, extremely adept in the layout of the imperial court and quite shrewd in the ways of the world. Yet, regarding Miss Jiang the Second, Lu Jiu sometimes felt she was very difficult to understand. It seemed that Jiang Li acted without a plan, for example, her sudden goodwill towards the Ye Family, and her straightforward assistance, seemed to be whimsical, apparently without any ulterior motive. Yet, every single thing she did would eventually reveal the initial reason for doing so after a long time.
But at the beginning, nobody could see what she was actually trying to do.
Lu Jiu could feel that Jiang Li’s visit to see Qiongzhi must be about something very important to her, and something that could make the always composed Jiang Li ’dispirited and distracted’ had to be no small matter. But the problem was, they didn’t know what Jiang Li was truly trying to do, and even if they did, they might not be able to fathom her purpose. She was truly peculiar; all her past actions were straightforward and transparent after a bit of investigation, but no matter how much they learned about her, she still seemed entirely enigmatic.
Lu Jiu couldn’t help but glance at Jih Heng—for this aspect of being an unsolvable mystery, Miss Jiang the Second and Duke Su, Jih Heng, were quite similar.
"I don’t know," Jih Heng said. "But we will soon find out."
"I think the real purpose of Jiang Li’s return to Xiangyang is about to emerge. In fact, I’m quite curious," Jih Heng said with a smile, "about what exactly she wants to do."
...
Jiang Li did not know that her every move was being closely watched. But even if she had known, she presently had no mind to contend with Jih Heng. Her thoughts were consumed by Xue Huaiyuan’s mad imprisonment, and she did not know whether to feel joy or sorrow at the moment.
