Chapter 286: Auspicious, Inauspicious Suspense
"If it’s favorable, there will be no need for sacrifices then or risks." Rama murmured.
"Just have a rest Rama, don’t think about anything." Aurora said as she squeezed her shoulders lightly.
"I’m fine, I’ll just stay with him till he wakes up." Rama said nonchalantly.
"You should take a rest, They’ll inform you if he wakes up." Aurora insisted.
"He almost died because of me, it’s the least I could do." Rama said, unwilling to move from position.
Aurora simply hummed and then left, giving her the space she needed to think. Staring blankly at Dalen in his unconscious state, she slowly extended her hand to hover near his face, but she quickly retracted it with hesitation.
Sighing, she moved to the window as she looked out into the horizon which bled dark orange hues, seeping into the darkened clouds as the sun slowly dipped below.
Pressing her forehead against the window, she puffed out a gust of air in exasperation and a mixture of anticipation. Her head was reeling between auspicious, inauspicious suspense of what was to come in the near future.
Her inner goddess was in a state of frenzy as if it could sense the near dilemma ahead of her. The optimistic words of Aurora comforted her, but there was this perceptible prick of unease in the pit of her stomach telling her otherwise.
She hated being left in the dark with no hint of the slightest answer to give her an idea of whatever the enigmatic and seemingly uncanny situation was and it didn’t help that she was feeling it deep down in her guts and it certainly wasn’t a good feeling.
She hadn’t realized how long she had been standing by the window until the sun disappeared and darkness loomed over the land. Looking back into the dark room, her worry filled eyes dropped on Dalen’s still figure on the bed.
Scrutinizing the room, her gaze fell on a candelabra and after finding a match and more candles, she lit up the candles, washing the room with a soft lighting.
Sitting beside him again, concern etched itself upon her gaze as she looked at him, pondering on why he was still unconscious. Surveying him intently, she saw his chest rise and fall softly and his breathing was quite stable too.
Relieved that he was fine, she relaxed as she watched him in silence. His gleaming silver-tinted grey hair lay sprawled on the bed, inviting her with a tempting urge to brush her fingers through.
Perhaps she was bored, but he had an exquisite hair, in that moment under the soft glow emanating from the candles, it looked like a cascading silver waterfall.
Surrendering to her intrusive thoughts, she stretched her hand toward his face and let temptation win as she brushed her fingers through his silvery, silky strands.
The moment she started brushing his hair with her fingers, his eyes shot open as he gasped erratically. His chest heaved heavily as he supported himself up with his elbows in a bid to sit up.
"What are you doing?" He snapped at her, making her heart skyrocket in a mixture of fear and embarrassment.
Rama had almost yelped in utter mortification at his unexpected consciousness, but his groan of pain snapped her out of her embarrassment as concern flooded her gaze.
"You should lay back down, you were badly hurt." Rama implied as she gently grabbed his arm in a bid to make him rest back, but he shoved her hand away with a gentle push as he sat up on the bed.
With every movement he made, his face contorted in pain and when he finally sat up, his head fell back as he leaned against the headrest with a relieved sigh.
Closing his eyes for a split moment, he abruptly opened them and those cold silver orbs of his peered right into hers, making her breath hitch for a second.
"What are you doing here?" He threw at her nonchalantly, but his voice was slightly hoarse as the pain suddenly spread from his back immediately he spoke.
"Watching you, what else?" She pointed out with creased brows as she eyed him skeptically.
He was acting rather differently, almost as if he was mad at her or perhaps he was enraged by something else, regardless of the fact the sudden change in his demeanor was too discernable as he was usually nice to her, very nice but now he was acting distant.
She told her inner goddess to calm down before jumping into conclusions, perhaps she was overthinking about every little reaction prompted from him. Obviously he was in agony even if he hid it beneath the suppressing mask he wore, it could be the reason for his mood change or perhaps not?
She figured the best way to not jump to any uncertain conclusions is to observe more, so she would.
"You can leave, I won’t die in my sleep." He said coldly as he ran his fingers through his silvery grey locks that sprawled around his shoulders, with tiny astray strands clinging to his neck that she suddenly had the urge to tame.
"It was my fault anyway and you were badly hurt, you almost died. You lost so much blood and..."
He abruptly interrupted as he whipped his face to her "Why are you here Rama?"
Her eyes squinted in confusion as she observed his strange behavior all of a sudden whatever was going on didn’t seem to be linked with his pain, but rather something else she found hard to fathom.
"I’m here because you got hurt.." She trailed off in uncertainty with the way he was staring at her so intensely the moment their eyes locked in a momentary lapse.
"Not because you care?" He mumbled in a hurt voice, the words barely reaching his tongue as they came out forced.
"I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t, I care about both you and Aurora, you’re both my family now." She said earnestly but the moment those words fled from her mouth, a frown etched itself into his face as he sprouted out of the bed.
Every movement he made struck a maddening pain into his veins, still yet he pushed himself just to get away from her.
She watched him in silence as he moved away from her to lean against the door side. His head hung low and his breathing flared out in raspy, strained gasps.
Rushing to his side with genuine concern, she hesitated as she tried to support him, but when she did, he snapped at her.
"Just leave, Rama! Leave!" His veins popped as he felt agonizing pain erupt from the deep slash in his back to the rest part of his body.
Rama flinched in fear at his sudden uproar. She pondered deeply on what she had done wrong to offend him, why was he angry at her and most importantly what had she done to provoke this raging side of him?
Her eyes welled up with tears as she forced her stiff feet to move back "I’m sorry...Its all my fault." Her voice choked up as she spat the words out.
She had no idea what she was apologizing for, but at that moment she felt as if everything was her fault, perhaps if she had never been in their lives, then none of the bad things would be happening.
Dalen was reeling with a torrent of rage immediately he woke up to see Rama beside him. He wasn’t enraged by her, but he was infuriated by the thought of her not being his.
Aurora’s words constantly rang in his head that she was never his to begin with, she would always belong to that monster, Draco and there was nothing he could do to alter the design of fate, he was helpless in the face of destiny.
The mere thought of her going back to him immediately he awakened crossed his mind too many times and the reality that he was powerless to stop it gave him a hard slap on his face.
His body heated with palpable rage that threatened to overwhelm him in that position. The more he looked at her, smelled her scent and heard her voice, giving up on her became an almost impossible choice to settle with.
She wasn’t his, but what if she never had to remember that vile creature’s face ever again and perhaps, just maybe in his wildest imagination start a new life with him? As illogical as it sounded, the ludicrous thought flashed through his head more than once.
Maybe, he was being stupid and irrational, but he was a man swooned from his feet by love, he was as blinded as he he had been brainwashed by the lies he told himself, that maybe she did feel a slight whiff of what he felt for her, that maybe those nice gestures and kind smiles she gave him was a reciprocation of what he felt for her.
But he knew it in his guts, that there were all delusions and fallacies he created in his head to comfort himself with, there was no hope for them and he was well aware that the bond she and Draco shared was undeniably inevitable.
