The Devil's Warrior Queen -
Chapter 280: Blossoming Feelings
Chapter 280: Blossoming Feelings
Rama found it difficult to stop thinking about the mysterious vampire she had encountered that night, he seemed vaguely familiar for a split second, but the more she pressed her thoughts on who he was, the more the familiarity slipped through her fingers.
As she walked into Elsa’s room, Elsa tugged her skirt, making her snap out of her thoughts as she looked down at the little girl who was undoubtedly terrified.
"Is he going to hurt us?" Elsa asked, her large blue eyes dancing with fear.
"Who? The vampire?" Rama asked and the girl nodded hastily.
"He won’t, he’s only a guest, now go to bed." Rama urged as she proceeded to tuck her into bed, but as soon as she climbed in, she halted with wide eyes screening the dimly lit room.
"Can you check for the monsters, please?" Elsa’s tiny voice rang with fear.
"Sure." Rama took her time, checking underneath the bed as well as every nook and cranny in the room.
She finally announced after the thorough check "No monsters here, now go to bed, alright?"
Elsa nodded as she laid down while Rama tucked her in. Stroking her hair sprawled all over the pillow, she persuaded the little girl softly "Monsters aren’t real, and when you grow up you’ll realize that I’m right."
The little girl nodded, feeling more relaxed even though she wasn’t fully certain of her words "Good night Aunt Rama."
"Good night little Angel." Rama bid her farewell before retreating to her room.
Snuggling into the warmth of the blanket, she closed her eyes to finally sleep, but her curiosity about the enigmatic vampire guest betrayed her.
Pondering on who he was certainly wouldn’t yield any useful information to her, so she decided to ask Dalen about it the next day, hopefully he wouldn’t shove her questions aside and if he did, that would prove her theory of being connected to the strange vampire somehow.
Although the dots didn’t seem to connect perfectly on the unforeseen truth, it appeared they knew far more than they disclosed to her knowledge. Perhaps they had been lying to her, but about what and why?
The more she pressed serious thoughts on it, nothing was comprehensible enough to make sense in her head anymore.
She barely got any rest as her thoughts ran wild throughout the night and when she finally did, dawn rapidly emerged. She groaned in dissatisfaction when she saw the sunlight streaming through the window.
Half awake, she washed up and hurriedly jolted to the dining hall. Arriving there, she met Dalen already seated, as usual he was punctual to the core with a charming grin splitting his lips.
Her eyes narrowly darted to Aurora’s empty chair, recently she had been busy, making her presence hard to come by. They only caught a glimpse of her once or twice and a few times, she would have breakfast or dinner with them.
Narrowing her gaze back on Dalen, she returned a faint smile as she took her seat.
"Is everything alright?" He suddenly asked, his brows were knitted together in worry and his smile dropped.
"Yes, everything is fine, why do you ask?" She knew how observant he was with just one glance, it was unsettling but at the same time impressive.
"You didn’t get much sleep, your face looks dull and your eyes are droopy." He pointed out blatantly.
"Well...." She trailed off and then sighed after accepting defeat, knowing no amount of lie could conceal the truth from those scrutinizing silver-tinted grey eyes of his.
"I have been thinking a lot and..." She trailed off again, comprehending inwardly on how to throw the disturbing questions at him.
"You can tell me anything Rama, what is wrong?" He asked as he leaned forward with keen interest.
"Will you tell me the truth then?" She blurted out in a low voice.
The air went still with a wave of silence for a moment and then, the bellowing sigh leaving his lips broke the silence.
"Rama...Its complicated, it really is." He said with an apologetic gaze, his silver eyes reflecting into her jade ones with a sincere glint.
"Not complicated enough to hide it from me, is it?" She intoned as she broke the eye contact, she could feel a rising anger swell within her as she realized she was right without even a doubt, they had been hiding something significant from her knowledge, but what could it be? What memory of her past life had been so profound that she had lost and now they were protecting her from it?
"I doubt gaining knowledge of it would complicate it any more." She breathed out in barely a whisper.
"We’re trying to protect you Rama, it’s best you regain your memories and know the truth, or else you won’t be able to accept it wholeheartedly. With time, you’ll regain your memories and everything else will be clear, for now, just live in the moment and wait. I promise you’ll know the truth but not now Rama, just trust me." Dalen said with certainty.
"Protect me from what? What do I need to be protected from?" Her voice broke in frustration.
"That’s why I said it’s complicated, you won’t understand unless you regain your memories back." Dalen intoned.
"So it wasn’t a coincidence then." She remarked as she shot him a subtle glare.
"The Silver Witch didn’t find me by chance and happened to save my life by accident, it was part of her purpose." She added, disappointment reflecting in her lens.
"Remember that same purpose was to protect you, but I’m afraid I cannot tell you anything now, our top priority is to help you retrieve your lost memories first." Dalen said.
Upon hearing his earnest words, she relaxed. Even though she was unable to attain knowledge of the truth immediately, at least they were trying to help her in every way possible to regain her memories, which would guarantee the entire truth revealed to her.
At least there was hope, but she couldn’t help but ponder on how complicated her situation was for them to keep her in the dark to protect her, uneasiness clogged her throat as she realized just how detrimental her real situation could turn out to be.
"Was I really a queen?" She blatantly asked, sharp jade eyes piercing into his fiercely for answers. She knew it was pointless trying to persuade him to tell her the entire truth, but at least he could reveal to her a few insignificant details that could help.
"Yes, you were." He answered seriously, but still she narrowed her eyes skeptically at him for a moment before affirming to his words.
"Did I really lose my memories during the war or was that another insignificant lie to put me in the dark?" She queried.
He looked away swiftly and his lips twitched. She knew he was concluding within himself on whether to tell her or not.
Tired of the prolonged hush that portrayed his silence on the question, she finally broke it "It’s barely an insightful knowledge, you can do as much, I’m not asking you to tell me the truth."
"Telling you anything else automatically leads to the truth, I apologize but I’m afraid I can’t say anymore, Rama." Dalen noted with an unwavering gait in his eyes.
She sighed "You didn’t really have to say anything, your silence already proves my answer. I didn’t lose my memories during the war, in fact there was no war." She stated confidently as she scoffed in disbelief.
"Rama, it doesn’t matter if it was a lie or not, you’re safer not knowing for now and when you do retrieve your memories, you’ll be able to understand everything properly." Dalen said in a persuasive tone.
"If there wasn’t any war in the first place then why am I trapped here? Apparently no war means I’ll be safe outside." She reasoned out as her brows furrowed in displeasure at the lies they had spewed into her head, making her think outside the castle was unsafe and risky, meanwhile there wasn’t any risk.
"There truly was a war and your kingdom lay in ruins now, but I can’t say anymore, that’s as far as I can tell you about anything right now." Dalen said as he squirmed in unease at her unending questions.
She observed him keenly as he struggled to keep the truth from her, it appeared to be her opening since he already seemed to be close to her, or perhaps he liked her, she suspected, after all she had caught him staring once or twice when he thought she wasn’t looking during the past few weeks.
His little nice gestures never went unnoticed by her, neither did the shy smile or the wistful stares, and also the hesitation when he wanted to say something but then would shove it away saying it was nothing.
She dreaded the thought of him falling in love with her, her stomach churned at the mere, harmless thought but deep down in the depths of her soul, she was yearning for someone else and it definitely wasn’t him.
It was quite disconcerting after all, to notice his blossoming feelings for her.
