Chapter 237: Celestial Wings
It was already nighttime and still not a trace of him was to be perceived by her then or presumably anytime soon. Her heart weighed heavy with dismay as she realized he might not come to see her that day.
Pondering on whether to go see him or not, she sighed in exasperation with her conflicting thoughts. He had strictly told her to wait for him, that he would come to see her when he was feeling more composed, but then there was no sign of him.
Concluding to wait for a few more hours, she continued reading, but as the seconds passed with his escalating absence, her hope ebbed down to less than a mustard grain, her face suddenly turning gloomy and nothing she seemed to read stuck into her head anymore.
There was only a few pages left to complete the book, but she angrily slammed it close and shoved the book away. She sat up crossing her legs on the bed, while she stared blankly at the wall with eyebrows creased in dissatisfaction.
Jerking her head to the window, her eyes momentarily locked into the glowing red ones peering through the window as it stared keenly at her.
A startled gasp subconsciously left her lips when she saw the glowing eyes piercing into her very being through the window acting as a barrier, but once she figured out the owner of the eyes, a delighted grin adorned her face as she scampered out of the bed.
Her heart skipped a thousand beats with his unannounced and definitely unexpected presence. She had finally concluded within herself that he was no longer going to show up as he had promised, but there he was, surprising her out of the blue.
Scurrying toward the window, she swung it open as she walked into the balcony to meet him with a plastered grin on her flushed face. Immediately she walked into the balcony, the midnight breeze whipped through her hair and clothes, making golden strands scatter in front of her face.
Unexpectedly, he pushed the stray locks aside as he tucked it ever gently behind her ears with those beautiful slender fingers of his brushing faintly against her cold skin.
Red hues brushed over her cheeks and nose at his gesture, her flustered face hidden in the embrace of the shadows as she leaned her head down, her grin expanding to the extent her cheeks ached from the excess smiling.
Realizing she was acting too sheepish and coyly from a simple gesture and his presence, she cleared her throat awkwardly and concealed her smile with a straight face as she tilted her head up to look at him.
Only at that composed moment did she realize the mighty pair of majestic black wings tucked behind his powerful visage, the obsidian steely feathers almost blending into the darkness as they gave a slight ruffle.
Without noticing, her mouth fell open as she stared at it in awe, her eyes dilating with pure marvel and wonderment at the captivating wings he possessed.
"Malika." He called softly, returning her attention back to him as she snapped her dazed face towards him.
Fluttering her lashes, she smiled "Your wings are stunning."
He was about to speak but she interrupted as she questioned him with creased brows "What are you doing in the balcony? You could have just knocked."
He stayed silent for a second. He had only sneaked on her balcony to steal a glance of her, he wasn’t going to stay but apparently telling her that would be upsetting, after all he had promised to pay her a visit.
"I wanted to take you somewhere." He lied blatantly, his face not giving out a single hint of it as he maintained his straight facade.
Blinking in a mixture of confusion and anticipation, she asked "Where are you taking me?"
"You’ll see for yourself." He said with a charming smile lighting up on his face as he extended his hand to her.
Placing her small hand on his large one, he squeezed it gently as he pulled her to the edge of the balcony.
Her breathing echoed loudly as it came out forced and hoarse, almost as if her breath was being dragged and forcefully pushed out of her lungs.
Pulling her hand from his, she took multiple steps away from the edge as her feet shifted back until her back was pressed against the window pane. She closed her eyes tightly as she slowly retained her composure.
"Malika, are you alright?" She could hear Zamiel’s heart warming, concerned voice drift through the air into her ears. It soothed her nerves.
Opening her eyes, she nodded her head "I’m fine, but I’m scared of heights." She pointed out with a low voice, forcing her gaze to maintain on him but it darted to the ground below the balcony.
"I see." He mumbled as he moved closer to her.
"Well, height is very much involved at where I’m about to take you." He pointed out.
She gulped, shaking her head vigorously indicating her refusal "No, definitely not. I’m not going, I can’t."
Cupping her face in his warm hands, he assured her "It’s just heights and I’m right here, I won’t let anything happen to you."
His voice was warm to the feel, so gentle it retained a whiff of softness and an unspoken promise to keep her safe, she knew he would no doubts about it.
He was persuasive with his hypnotic voice, luring her to take a leap of faith but her long time fear of heights deviated his words from soothing her fragile heart, imagining the scare she would get from her fear, she suddenly exclaimed "No!"
Zamiel merely stayed silent for a second as he stared at her terrified stricken face. Caressing her hair with gentle strokes, he learned down and wrapped his arms around her petite frame, pulling her into his warm embrace which was endearing to her soul.
Relaxing her body into his comforting embrace, she heard him whisper into her ears, his hot breath fanning her reddened cheeks almost made her forget about her predicament and fear of heights, she subconsciously closed her eyes.
"Do you trust me?" He suddenly asked, leaving her a bit taken aback by his surprising question but she answered nevertheless.
"Yes, I do."
Immediately she spoke, his grip around her waist tightened and a powerful force enveloped them both, lifting them from the ground with astonishing speed. At first it felt as though a torrent of energy flung her straight into the air until she heard the powerful flapping of wings and realized in her dazed state, that it was Zamiel’s doing.
Malika’s heart raced with a mixture of fear and exhilaration as they soared into the night sky, leaving the earthly realm far below, her mouth flew open in terror but a scream failed to erupt from it.
Despite her initial trepidation, Malika’s fear dissolved in the face of Zamiel’s unwavering presence. The wind rushed past them as they ascended higher and higher, the world below shrinking into a miniature tableau. Instead of panic, a newfound sense of freedom began to blossom within her.
Zamiel navigated effortlessly through the night, guiding them toward a distant mountain silhouetted against the moonlit sky. His powerful wings beat rhythmically, propelling them with a grace that defied the laws of gravity. Malika clung to him as they soared, her fear slowly transforming into a sense of exhilaration and wonder as they touched the greyish-blue painted skies.
As they reached the mountain’s peak, Zamiel landed with a gentle descent. Malika stepped onto the solid ground, her heart still racing from the breathtaking flight. Looking into Zamiel’s eyes, she felt an unexpected sense of gratitude and trust, realizing that within his embrace, even her greatest fears could be conquered.
A mischievous smirk hung on the curved edges of his lips as they landed and his briadened wings slowly tucked behind him.
Looking around, she realized they were atop the edge of a mountain, with a profound chasm of darkness in front of them.
"That was...amazing." She blurted out while breathing heavily as a smile tore through her face, her fear of heights fading into the darkness.
"You can do it too." He said and she looked at him with confused eyes.
"You have wings Malika, you’re an Angel." He pointed out with a blank tone.
"But I’m only a half Angel." She said.
"You have wings, now spread them out and fly." He said with an unwavering certainty.
"I do?" She asked with wide eyes in awe and excitement.
"Yes love." He said and a radiant smile broke through her lips.
With Zamiel’s encouragement, Malika delved deep within herself, calling upon the ancient teachings they had painstakingly studied. She closed her eyes, focusing on the sensations coursing through her being. A surge of ethereal energy pulsed within her, tingling at the edges of her consciousness.
A moment of intense tranquility encapsulated the mountaintop as Malika surrendered to the cosmic forces within. And then, a sensation unlike any other overwhelmed her. The dormant wings that had long been unfurled, a cascade of pure, radiant light bursts forth from her back.
Feathers as white as fresh snow emerged, glistening with an otherworldly luminescence. They expanded, stretching towards the sky, as if yearning to touch the celestial bodies above. Malika’s heart swelled with awe and gratitude as she marveled at her newfound celestial appendages.
Zamiel stood in silent reverence, a sense of fulfillment and pride emanating from his usually stoic demeanor. Witnessing Malika’s transformation filled him with a deep sense of accomplishment and an unexpected warmth.
