Chapter 110: Fragile Heart

Chapter 110: Fragile Heart

Rama’s face contorted into a grim look upon the mention of lord Zamiel’s name and her brows furrowed tightly. She knew sooner or later that egositic demon would hurt her or do something to hurt her, but she had never presumed it to be this bad for the girl to be squatted up in a dark corner, crying.

"What did he do to you?" Her voice was calm and soothing but anger lingered near.

Malika sniffed as she looked up to her with reddened eyes, she gulped bitterly before she spoke. "He...He doesn’t want us to be together." She choked on her words as hot tears poured out of her eyes.

"Did he say why?" Rama queried, a part of her was pleased but her heart felt the tang of heartbreak that Malika felt, she couldn’t help but feel displeased as much as she was pleased with the news.

"Apparently, his world is too dangerous for me, so he’s trying to protect me by letting go, but is that even right? Do you let go of someone you love just to protect them? Why can’t they be by your side as you protect them?" She said with a pained, yet enraged voice as she wiped off the tears from her face furiously.

"It’s complicated when it comes to demons, I suspect something had happened in the past that’s made them all uptight about being with a human." Rama stated as she stroked her hair gently.

"You can’t say the same for yourself, Lord Damien is getting married to a human, I see no complications there." Malika said with slight whiff of irritation in her voice.

"I’m sure he has his reasons, he’s only trying to protect you." Rama said.

"From what?! Protect me from what?!" She snapped, her voice echoed through the far end of the corridors as she yelled in a pained voice, her body quivering with unsurpassed moment of heartbreak as tears pooled the brim of her amber eyes.

Rama stunned by her unexpected outburst stayed frozen in her crouched position, she had never seen Malika in such a heartbroken state before, it broke her own heart to see the poor girl in pain.

"It’s alright love, how about I talk to him instead?" Rama implied in a soothing tone as she wrapped her arms over her in a warm embrace and caressed her back with gentle strokes.

Even with how much she despised the thought of Malika ending up with a night creature, and with one as heartless and cold as Zamiel, she would do anything to never see her in such a state again, even if it meant she would have to let her be with him.

Malika shook her head vigorously, her jaws clenched and she bit down on her lower lip as she spoke with a cracked voice "No, there’s no need to talk to him, you can’t change his mind, even I couldn’t. He lost hope in us before we had even started."

Rama sighed in exasperation with drooped shoulders, so much for an inauspicious night where only unfortunate events were bound to transpire.

"I know, I just wanted to try, but I won’t." She said, but Malika didn’t respond anymore.

She seemed to have accepted the cold and bitter truth that there was no hope for she and lord Zamiel, but the unendurable pain gnawing at her chest to stab her heart painfully, pricked her unforgivable.

At that moment, it seemed as if the universe was against their happiness, while Malika was dealing with her rejection, she was torn between the dark allure of Draco and her hopeless wedding, but oddly she felt as if the days ahead of her would be more treacherous and unforgiving than the present calamities she was facing.

Maybe Lord Zamiel was right, they were treading down the road to a perilous path into their world filled with nothing but endless darkness, temptation and eternal conflict.

"Come on." Rama muttered as she supported her up on her feet.

Luckily, the masquerade ball party was almost coming to an end, so they endured the uncomfortably for a short moment before it finally ended.

They rode back to lord Damien’s manor while silence weighed in the carriage. Lord Damien didn’t speak nor question them upon seeing the girls sullen mood as they rode back to the manor, he had probably let them be suspecting they were tired from the long night.

As soon as they arrived at the manor, Lord Damien bid them both good night as they retreated to their chambers. Malika and Rama slumped down on the bed after changing into their nightwears.

Rama thought it was a good idea to stay with Malika, she had being avoiding her chamber because of Draco and his sneaky shenanigans and also, to comfort Malika with her presence.

They both cuddled as they laid down, with Malika’s back facing her as she wrapped her arms around her. The silver glow of the moonlight pooled over the arc window as they spoke in soft whispers.

"I wonder.." Malika muttered in a lost state.

"You wonder what?" Rama queried with keen interest as she stared at her curly golden strands which she felt the urge to comb her fingers through.

"I wonder..if lord Zamiel loves me, if that was the reason he let go. Did he let go because he was trying to protect me or because he didn’t care? Or maybe he pitied me for being such a fragile flower?" Malika said thoughtfully as she stared at the dark clouds through the window.

Rama sighed thoughtfully, plunging the room into momentarily silence.

"He wouldn’t have dragged you out of the ballroom if he didn’t care like you said. It’s far from pity, it seemed to me as if he was genuinely concerned about you and also jealous." Rama pointed out.

"Really? Is that what you think?" Malika asked, in somewhat a doubtful voice.

"It’s what I know."

"He cared before, now he doesn’t care anymore." Malika said in almost a whisper.

"What makes you think that?"

"I know." Malika said.

"I saw his eyes when he looked at me, it was soulless and empty. I don’t know how he did it, but it was like he completely rid himself of every feeling linked to the humane emotions. It was petrifying and cold." She added with a shaky gasp leaving her lips.

"Don’t cry, it’s alright." Rama whispered in her ears as she buried her fingers into her silky golden locks, letting her intrusive thought win.

"Cry? There’s no more tears left to cry." Malika said dryly.

"I’m so tired of crying and like you said, tears won’t help so what’s the point."

"Tears make you human, you taught me that and I might not agree with you on most things but I agree with you on that." Rama said, making the girl chuckle shortly.

"But you’re mostly right. I should have listened to you when you warned me, even in the darkest of paths, how could I see the light when there’s no light? It’s only filled with darkness. I forgot that I was the human and he was the demon, while expecting him to reciprocate my human feelings." Malika said as she sighed.

"Well, Lord Zamiel is good at keeping his emotions bottled up, even though it inwardly tears him apart, I doubt he’ll still reveal it." Rama said.

"Do you think he was right?" Malika suddenly queried with that small, melodious voice of her ringing like a soothing melody in the dark silence.

"Right about what?" Rama queried.

"That I would easily forget him with time, the human emotions are as fragile as my heart." She said in a floating whisper.

Rama stayed silent for a short moment, only the distant hooting of owls and the howling of wolves resonated in the silent air.

"Probably, the less memories you share together, the easier it is to let go." Rama stated thoughtfully, her voice soothing and calm, almost like a hypnotic persuasion for her to forget him.

"So I’m supposed to easily forget him, but why does it feel like every piece of him is embedded into my brain, the taste of his lips, his dark musky scent and the cold warmth of his fingers on my skin?" Malika said as she stared out into space, as she imagined vivid images of him in her head.

"Of course it’ll take time, but your entire existence doesn’t revolve around him, I’m sure you’ll find someone who’s worthy of your love." Rama comforted her.

"It doesn’t matter anymore, I can definitely live without him as long as I have you by my side." Malika said with a more cheerful tone, Rama was pleased that she was quick adjusting to her rejection but rather she was hiding the pain burning within her.

"Yes and move on peacefully, at least you wouldn’t have any problems relating to demons or night creatures."

"Yes, but first I’ll have to forget about him." Malika said in a firm tone.
