Chapter 64: Chapter 49: Kill the thief!_1

Dawn was just breaking, the sun having barely peeked half its face over the horizon, and the roosters had yet to crow. The entirety of Hutou City was still enveloped in a cold fog.

The stone steps felt chilling.

Blind Bei knelt on one knee at the front.

Behind him, in order, were Liang Cheng, A Ming, Xue Three, and Fanli.

The five of them knelt there neatly on one knee.

At this moment, Zheng Fan, who had been sleeping in his room, groggily opened his eyes. As if sensing something, he didn’t ring the bell but instead got out of bed and walked to the door.

"My lord, we will depart early this morning so as not to disturb your rest, but we must still pay our respects," Blind Bei said, his voice soft.

As he finished speaking, Blind Bei and the four men kneeling behind him on the steps all bowed their heads.

"We wish you good health, my lord!"

Once their respects were paid, they all rose and departed together.

Throughout, Zheng Fan remained behind the door, not opening it to bid them farewell.

Once he heard their departing footsteps, Zheng Fan returned to bed, pulled the covers over himself, and went back to sleep.

Just as Blind Bei and the others were leaving the inner courtyard, they encountered Siniang, who was waiting there.

Siniang leaned against the railing, smiling as she asked, "So, have you finished saying your goodbyes to my lord?"

Xue Three looked at Blind Bei, confused, and asked, "Blind Bei, didn’t you say you were certain you could wake my lord naturally? I was waiting for my lord to push open the door and say goodbye to us. I’d even prepared a whole sentimental speech."

In truth, everyone had prepared a little speech, ready for a heartfelt exchange should Zheng Fan open the door.

Blind Bei shook his head. "My lord is awake."

"Awake?" Xue Three looked puzzled.

"But my lord never opened the door," Blind Bei continued.

"Why? Was he afraid of things getting emotional and feeling awkward? I suppose it makes sense; we’re all grown men, and it’s not like us to get all sentimental. It’s just a pity. I prepared for so long. Ah Li even spent all last night memorizing his lines."

Siniang chuckled. "My lord has been training hard these past few days and is exhausted. He usually sleeps late into the morning, goes to the government office to check in, and then returns to continue his cultivation. Did you really think my lord is so foolish as to suddenly wake up extra early for no reason, just in time to find you all kneeling at his door, whispering your goodbyes?"

Blind Bei nodded. "Indeed."

"Heh, that’s truly awkward then," Xue Three scratched his head. "My lord must have seen through our little act."

Sigh, and here they’d hoped to score some points with their farewell.

"It’s fine," Blind Bei said, unconcerned. "A superior who sees through the minor schemes of his subordinates often finds it quite gratifying. It’s as if everything is within his grasp."

"Hmm, you’ve got a point. So, you’re saying we managed to suck up effectively after all?"

"Alright, it’s really time to go. A Ming, Ah Li, Liang Cheng, you three be careful. Don’t be reckless. Even if you find the target, wait for a while, you must wait until my lord advances in rank before acting."

A Ming nodded. "Understood."

"Siniang, I’ll have to count on you to take care of things at home."

Siniang just snorted disdainfully.

After some hesitation, Blind Bei decided not to tell Siniang or the others about the incident where Mo Wan’s killing intent had flared.

Whether they knew about it or not would have no bearing on the situation.

Firstly, the relationship between my lord and Mo Wan wasn’t something people like them could meddle in.

Secondly, with Mo Wan’s abilities, if he truly decided he wanted to be the director of the orphanage they planned to establish upon their return, who could possibly stop him?

It was like a game where you knew there was a bug that could crash the whole system. But until it actually crashed, you had to keep playing as usual.

"Let’s move out!"

Blind Bei waved his arm. Outside the residence, the men from the transport guild were already prepared; more than twenty large carts stood in a line.

The current guildmaster of the transport guild, the famously filial Xiao Yibo, was already waiting beside an exquisite carriage.

As Blind Bei approached, Xiao Yibo promptly knelt beside the carriage, offering his back as a human footstool.

A faint smile touched Blind Bei’s lips. Without any false ceremony, he stepped onto Xiao Yibo’s back and boarded the carriage.

Still kneeling, Xiao Yibo turned to Xue Three, waiting for him to board the carriage as well.

"I’ll ride a horse," Xue Three declared.

Xiao Yibo immediately scrambled up, led his own horse over, and presented it to Xue Three.

"HAHA!" Xue Three laughed heartily and swung himself onto his horse.

From within the carriage, Blind Bei lifted the curtain and said, "Let’s set off. We’ll rest at Mei Village tonight."

With that, Blind Bei let the curtain fall and settled back into the carriage.

Inside the carriage with him were two women. One was dressed as a young matron, though she was not old, clearly a young wife. The other appeared to be perhaps sixteen or seventeen, with a lovely face and a slightly bashful demeanor.

A small stove was in the carriage. The younger woman was warming wine, while the older one proactively helped Blind Bei remove his outer cloak and began to massage his shoulders.

"And you are?" Blind Bei asked.

"Replying to you, sir, this humble one is Xiao Lang’s primary wife."

"And this servant is Xiao Lang’s secondary wife."

"Xiao Lang feared the journey would be arduous for you, sir, so he bid us accompany you and attend to your daily needs."

Blind Bei nodded. He said nothing, merely accepting the offered wine cup with composure and enjoying the massage.

Hutou City was not actually far from Tuman City; by horse, it was a journey of a single day. However, an entire caravan would naturally travel much slower.
