Chapter 538: My husband is the best at making surprise move
Wow...I had forgotten the last time I woke up feeling this fresh.
My body did not seem heavy, and my mind did not feel sluggish. I woke up with a clear head instead of feeling like I wanted to dive back beneath the blanket despite going to sleep late last night.
Wait...it wasn’t because I unknowingly slept until the next day again, right?
Ignis!
[No, it’s the next morning. You slept for seven hours and twenty minutes]
Wow...how did this Salamander know? It didn’t stay all night to count my sleeping time like a smartwatch, did it?
Oh, no matter. I sprang off the bed and skipped to the balcony. Opening the double doors wide, I took a deep breath that came with a wisp of mana. "Oh~" I shuddered slightly at the sensation I hadn’t felt for a long time. "How nice!"
"What are you doing, sweetheart?" Natha’s voice came from the dressing room’s door. I turned my head to catch his disapproving face, feeling confused until he draped a coat around my body and practically wrapped me on it. "Don’t go out with only your nightwear in winter."
It...it was only early winter, tough? It wasn’t even snowing. The snow hadn’t greeted us yet. As I thought like that while he was wrapping me like a burrito, I let out a strained gasp.
"D-don’t tell me you won’t allow me to play in the snow later!" my eyes widened in fear as I looked at him, pleading.
He frowned; the corner of his eyes twitched. I had thought he would scold me and was thinking about the kind of seduction I should make to coax him when he suddenly laughed. It was a silent laugh that got his shoulder shaking as he pulled me into his arms and carried me inside.
"Why are you laughing?"
"No, it’s just...you made the same face you used to make in the hospital," Natha said with a nostalgic look on his face. "You made the same face as when the head nurse scolded you."
Ugh...
"You should just erase that kind of memory!"
"No way! It’s so adorable that I kept replaying it in my mind even after returning here."
Nggh--unfair! How could I argue if you said it like that?! I squeezed his cheek in annoyance and asked in a sterner voice. No, I told him. "Whatever! I’m going to play in the snow whatever you say."
Contrary to my thought that he would oppose it, he just smiled helplessly and patted my upset head. "I know you’d be stubborn about it, so I’ll allow it."
"Really?" my lips stretched wide before I remembered that I was trying to stay upset and demanding. "Ahem--I mean, I don’t need your permission. Hmph!"
"You sound like Jade," he laughed.
"Well, I am Jade’s Papa!"
"Yes, you’re right~"
"Why does it feel like you’re mocking me?"
"I would never," Natha made a non-so-convincing smile and I squeezed his cheeks again. "Alright, alright--on a serious note, let’s have some rules before you’re running out playing with the snow."
My eyes narrowed and my brows furrowed at the word rules. He laughed and pinched my nose as if enacting revenge. "Listen to me first."
Hmm...fine, since I woke up nicely this morning and he had been laughing a lot.
I nodded and he raised his first finger--what? How many would there be?
"One, you can only go out with appropriate winter clothes. I don’t care if Ignis warmed you up, you still have to wear proper coats and scarf."
Okay, that made sense. Besides, dressing correctly was part of the fun in any event. I nodded easily at that.
"Two; I need to go with you," he said sternly. "If you want to play and I’m not here, you have to call me first and wait for me before going out."
"Huh? But--"
"No but."
"What if you are in an important meeting?"
"I’ll postpone it," he shrugged.
"What if the meeting is with the Elders?"
He sighed and stared at me. "Who do you think is more important to me? The Elders or you?"
"...what about the realm?"
"The realm or you?"
"...me?"
He patted my head as if telling me I did a good job answering correctly, before humming in satisfaction. I spent a few seconds admiring the fact that he seemed so...happy. The dark shadow around his eyes that had been persistently clinging there ever since Shwa’s last growth was finally gone.
Ah...how could I even pretend to be annoyed if he looked this happy? My cheeks blushed just for the blessing that was his brilliant face. Damn...to think I was the only one who could see this face...what a waste.
Or not.
Why would I share this sight with someone else? Mm, that’s right--this scenery was my prerogative. My limited edition, member-only, exclusive privilege.
Naturally, I was the only member.
"Why are you giggling to yourself?" he suddenly asked, shattering my deep pondering about how nice his face was. "You haven’t given me your answer."
Ignoring my heated cheeks, I hugged his neck and cooled my cheek on his shoulder. "Okay, I’ll call you first," I giggled. "Besides...I can’t imagine being in the snow without you anymore."
He smiled; a relaxed one that felt like the first snow. Ah, right...even his temperature felt like the first snow. It was cold and surprising at first but never failed to make me happy.
"It was amazing," I muttered. "After living in the hospital, I only experienced snow three times, and you were in all those three," I giggled. "When we met the first time--"
"In which you fainted immediately."
"When we met again--"
"In which you throw up and fainted not long after..."
"And when you propose!" I laughed and threw my arms in the air.
"In which you finally healthy," he laughed with me. "So I hope this year’s snow won’t make you sick again, yeah?"
I giggled and kissed him briefly. "If I get sick, that wouldn’t be because of the snow."
"You didn’t get sick because of the snow the second time."
"Stop talking back at me!"
He laughed and kissed me again to unravel the twist in my lips--this cunning demon! But he looked so blissful and handsome that I couldn’t get annoyed for more than a second. Ah...I hoped we could just live our life in this blissful happiness from now on--although I knew it was impossible.
I mean...we still had our enemies to be handled.
But in that morning, I just wanted to feel happy. "I hope...we can have next year’s snow with Shwa."
"Hmm...I’m not exactly disagreeing, but..." Natha tilted his head. "I don’t think exposing baby to too much cold is a good thing."
"H-huh? Oh...you’re right, but..." I bit my lips as the vision of enjoying the first snow with our baby had been planted strongly in my head and it was hard to get rid of it. "Umm...oh! Can’t we put a barrier to protect Shwa? Ignis can make one too so Shwa will stay warm no matter what..."
Natha raised his brow.
"Is...isn’t it good to expose baby to as many experiences and sensations as possible?" I added while flailing our hands. "Jade really likes how the snows are falling so...so I’m sure Shwa will also..."
Natha pressed his trembling lips to suppress his laughter and I groaned in embarrassment at my own rambling. I pressed my face in his neck for a long time until he suddenly stopped walking.
Huh...because of our conversation, it didn’t even register in my mind that we were heading somewhere. Absentmindedly, I thought he carried me to the dining room since that was what he often did. But when I couldn’t hear the familiar sounds of the servants shuffling around to prepare our breakfast, or Jade’s enthusiastic chirping to greet me good morning.
When I raised my head curiously, I found out that we were actually in the nursery. Ah, I wasn’t talking about the whole wing, but the room we designated as the baby room. The wallpaper had been taken off and the wall repainted in plain white--or so it was yesterday.
...what the hell happened in one night?
The wall was no longer white. It was a green meadow with colorful flowers peeking out in between. It was a lush forest bathed in golden light. It was a hill sprinkled with white blossoms.
"What..." my lips parted on their own. "When did..."
My already stuttered breath stopped when I realized the white blossoms were swaying in the wind, and the white petals flew around the walls. My eyes widened and I lost the ability to form coherent thought.
But little did I know that it was only the start of the surprise because Natha turned me around and I sucked my breath sharply.
There, in front of us, was the pristine, beautifully crafted, white bassinet.
