Chapter 97: Trumpet of Doom
The mercenaries gulped as they looked at the man’s smiling face. They felt chills just hearing his question.
"No, we didn’t hear a thing," Jez said, nodding while gesturing with his hand to the group of mercenaries to go along.
And the rest of the humans nodded without saying a single thing. They were afraid to utter a word upon witnessing the instant killing in front of them.
’Is he going to believe us?’ One of the mercenaries thought, then glanced towards his companions, whose heads had been sweating since a moment ago.
’He’s really a demon,’ someone conveyed inside his head.
’I want to go back,’ another one thought.
"That’s a good thing to know," Zeno replied upon opening his eyes, still having the menacing smile on his lips.
The next second, he looked back at the giant snake and spun the dagger in his hand.
"Now, it’s your turn, isn’t it?" He asked, which made the monster cower in fear.
"S-Spare me! I-I will guide you inside this place. J-Just don’t kill me. I-I am even willing to be your slave," the snake spoke, begging for his life.
"Hmnn, I wonder about that—having a snake as a pet? I don’t have any intention to have one. And regarding the killing part, I think they have more than enough reason than me to send you to your death," Zeno replied, and he glanced at Royle, who was clenching his fist.
"They lost someone irreplaceable to them, and it was your own doing," he added.
Afterward, Jez glanced at the monster before looking at Rye, who was wailing in silence while hugging Allesanah’s dead body.
"I-I can still save her!" Tencent exclaimed, then crawled forward, hissing.
"There’s a way to revive her," he added.
Zeno knitted his brows while the group’s mood lightened up a bit upon hearing the monster’s proclamation.
"Are you telling the truth?" Jez was the first one to ask.
"You can trust us regarding this matter," Tencent’s other head answered.
"However, there is a price to pay," the snake added.
"What is it?" Royle replied with a question.
He was so eager to know if there was really a way to bring Alles back that he was ready to do anything to see her smile once more.
However, the hope that started to bloom in his heart shattered as soon as the demon chimed in to the conversation.
"Quit it; I’m not buying your words," Zeno said from afar.
Then he started to walk in the direction of the snake. The daggers on his hand returned to their small black cube appearance after he tossed them in mid-air.
"Making her your host, is that what you wanted to say?" Zeno asked after reaching a certain distance near the monster.
"But if you think about it pretty well, it’s quite plausible. Though she will be just an empty shell like the one you’ve used earlier unless..." Zeno paused, then he glanced at the deeper part of the dungeon.
"You’re talking about something different," he added.
Upon hearing his statement, Royle dashed at Tencent with his fist, anger and sorrow still present in his eyes; however, a giant palm blocked his way, making him turn around to look at their leader.
"Don’t stop me!" He exclaimed with emphasis on each of his words.
"Listen first!" Jez ordered, and it caught Zeno’s attention back to them.
Then, upon noticing that the demon was looking at him, he spoke once again.
"Like what?" He asked, his tone filled with curiosity and a request for the demon to satisfy him.
"Like the Seed of Resurrection, though it’s impossible for something like that to be here in this place," Zeno answered.
’Seed of Resurrection?’ Jez thought.
His brows furrowed, trying to search his mind to see if he had heard that term before; however, nothing at all came to his thoughts.
Then he looked back at the group of mercenaries behind him and asked, hoping that someone among them had knowledge regarding that seed thing, but none of them answered. They all shook their heads, which made Jez click his tongue in disappointment. However, the next second, Rye began to speak, giving him the answer he was looking for.
"It’s the fruit that came from the Tree of Life," she whispered, but due to the silence of the surroundings, everyone still heard her loud and clear.
"According to the legend from the teachings of the temple, there is a tree that bears a single fruit after a millennium, and this fruit has the ability to bring someone back from the dead," Rye explained without removing her eyes from Allesanah’s face.
"Is there really something like that?" Goomer replied, asking, but the priestess just shook her head as a form of response.
Then it was Tencent who satisfied everyone’s curiosity.
"It is indeed true, but I’m not referring to that one; after all, only the deities know where the Tree of Life is, much less its seed," he said, invalidating the demon’s claims.
The next second, both of the monster’s heads stood and crawled up while its eyes were still staring at the demon.
Afterward, Jez yelled all of a sudden after weighing the monster’s words.
"Let’s do it! Bring Alles back to us. Lead the way!" He said.
However, he received no reply from Tencent; seconds passed by, and the snake’s eyes remained focused on the demon with no intention to avert them from him. The duke became confused, so he walked a little closer towards the two individuals positions and repeated his command, but the monsters still ignored him.
"It’s not you who I am talking to," one of the snake’s heads said.
The next second, the demon lowered his head and shook it upon hearing the monster.
"I am with them, and he is our leader; I wouldn’t speak ill of him if I were you," Zeno said before his eyes glanced at the group of mercenaries.
"Especially that woman behind her; she has the energy of those deities to whom you’ve pledged your loyalty," Zeno added.
Then the monster straightened himself up and hissed.
"I know, but I still have dignity left within me; I won’t obey those who are weaker than myself," Tencent replied.
Jez and Royle clenched their fists and glared at the monster upon hearing his statement, but they chose to remain silent. Meanwhile, Zeno let out a short laugh and spoke.
"Oh! Now we’re talking, so tell me, how would you intend to bring that woman back to life?" He asked, curiosity present in his lifeless eyes.
"What can be found inside this place that you’re so confident in?" He added.
Upon seeing the curious look on the demon’s face, Tencent, the snake, couldn’t help but feel worried about the rest of the monsters inside the place.
’Is it really okay to bring this demon down there?’ He thought.
. . . . .
Meanwhile, deeper inside the dungeon’s tunnel, there were several monsters talking about the sudden disappearance of the presence of the creature that Zeno killed a few moments ago.
The majority of the monsters in there had horns and featherlike wings that differed in color.
"Anreajhs’s energy vanished; do you know the reason for this?" A man with the body of a minotaur and three horns protruding on his forehead asked.
"He followed Tencent upon noticing that he had not returned yet with just the task of fending off a bunch of human beings," another monster commented, letting the others know of the reason.
"Hmnn, but that snake, I can still feel his presence; is it possible for Anreajhs to get killed by humans before Tencent?" A manticore answered, stating a question.
Its body size was so enormous that it could rival the snake; it had two pairs of red-orange wings with black stripes. Its powerful claws could be seen tearing the ground apart every time it walked.
"Absolutely not; that one-eyed bastard was powerful enough to go toe to toe with all of us here; mere humans would not be able to take him down," the man with a minotaur’s body replied while shaking his head.
"Then there’s someone who managed to sneak in this place, maybe a demon?" A floating orb of light joined in the conversation all of a sudden.
Then the place was filled with the annoying laughter of the monsters. It took a few minutes for it to die down, and as soon as it became quiet, the manticore replied to the orb of light’s query.
"That’s impossible; the supreme deities made this place unable to be entered by those creatures," it said, and laughed once more.
"You’re right about that; these days’ demons couldn’t enter this place due to the deities’ blessings, but it couldn’t be said to an ancient one," the orb of light answered, and the rest of the monsters fell into a never-ending silence.
They all thought about the possibility that an ancient demon was present inside the place. However, they could not determine how it would happen. After all, they knew for a fact that those demons were locked away in the underworld.
"But if this is really the case, the Trumpet of Doom will be blown once more, and the time for the deities to descend on this land will be getting near," the orb of light said as it flew around the monsters.
"And when that time comes, we, the Fallens will be free from this place!" Another monster yelled.
Little did they know that moment would never be bound to happen, as the grim reaper of death was on his way to rip their souls apart.
