The Demon King's First General -
Chapter 70: Frost Revenant
Chapter 70: Frost Revenant
Up above the clouds, where the moon appeared closer than ever. Its radiance kept the serene night sky beaming with light. The tranquility void with any mishaps vanished as soon as a wyvern passed through the clouds, gliding beneath it.
On its back, there was a woman lying with her hands acting like a pillow underneath her head. Her hair whizzed behind her, revealing her breathtaking charm that any man would fight for.
"Oh, it died already," she uttered upon opening her left eye while keeping the other closed.
"To think that he can subdue that monster in just a little span of time." She paused and let out a short laugh before continuing her words.
"If I’ve stayed there a little longer, maybe I’ll be a stunning corpse as of now," she chuckled while joking about her own death.
Then she returned to her sleep and paid no heed to the spectacular surroundings around her, though there was one thought circling inside her head, which soon made a smile sprout on her delicate lips.
’The Demon King’s General, is it? I wonder who’s stronger than him and the leader,’ she contemplated.
Somewhat eager to know, she let her curiosity slip away for now; after all, she knew for a fact that both existences were forces not bound by the logic of this world.
. . . . .
The cerberus glared at Zeno while moving step after step in a circular motion. Its feet created several fingerprints on the snow-covered ground.
Despite its overwhelming restoring ability, the injuries it suffered from the demon’s hands caused it to feel frightened and keep a distance from him.
Meanwhile, Zeno remained standing in his position, waiting for the monster to lunge at him at any moment. He raised his hand and fidgeted the dice around his fingers before letting it spin at the top of his hand.
Seconds later, it stopped spinning and landed on a surface that had five white dots facing up toward the sky.
"If you won’t come at me, then let me do the deed of charging at you," he uttered, smiling with menace.
Afterward, the dice transformed into a jet-black scythe, which he swirled around himself before dashing in the three-headed creature’s direction.
’Be my eyes, Eliana,’ he thought, and a white line circling him appeared.
Then, in less than a second, its circumference grew larger as it covered the entirety of the area, making Zeno able to sense even the tiniest snowflake falling from the sky.
Meanwhile, the cerberus opened all of its mouth, and another set of fireballs was hurled into the demon, but Zeno dodged them as soon as he saw their trajectory.
As he reached a certain distance from the monstrous creature, Zeno leaped, swirling his scythe, and aimed for the monster’s head located in the middle. The cerberus thought of swallowing him in mid-air while the two other heads spat another fireball into him.
With just a little bit of time to evade the attack aimed at him, Zeno chose to cut it, making it explode right before his eyes. The next second, he created a platform of energy behind him to propel himself a little faster above the beast’s wide-open mouth.
Then he swung the scythe downward and sliced the middle head, and as soon as he landed on the snow, he severed its four legs with incredible speed. The cerberus howled due to the sudden pain, but the brown smoke started to heal it even before the demon’s next set of attacks.
However, Zeno didn’t let himself be bothered by this. With Eliana’s Legacy, he aimed at the creature’s soft spots, giving it a hard time to counterattack. He repeated this pattern in a constant manner until the cerberus failed to regenerate one of its legs.
"Finally out of energy? Let me help you with that!" Zeno exclaimed upon seeing the fruits of his labor.
Then he leaped above the huge monster and swung his scythe to slice one of its heads again before touching the middle one, making it explode through Ingrid’s Legacy.
The cerberus growled in pain with its two heads and a leg missing; it tried to bite Zeno even though it had no energy sufficient to move that much.
But the scythe on Zeno’s hand disappeared, and a pair of gauntlets materialized, covering both of his arms. Then he stopped the monster’s last attempt to kill him by putting both of his hands on its wide-open mouth, preventing it from getting closed.
"You’re persistent, but death is your only way out, so be a good dog and die," Zeno said.
After that, he exerted enough strength to tear the cerberus’ last head off, making its blood splatter on his whole body and coloring the snow with droplets of blood.
Zeno looked at his right side and proceeded to walk in that direction without getting bothered by the red-metallic stain on his hair or any of his clothing.
And after almost half an hour of walking in a straight line, he arrived at his destination, the Frozen Lake. The demon looked around him and surveyed the area.
"Nothing’s unusual," Zeno uttered as he finished scanning the lake.
The place was almost a hectare in size, while trees with their leaves covered with snow surrounded it and kept it hidden from the world. Even the traces of energy circling around the lake were insignificant in the demon’s eyes.
These things made Zeno click his tongue in disappointment. He felt betrayed; after all, he thought that the strange happenings he heard from the tavern regarding this place would lead him to the location of one of the keys. However, even with Eliana’s Legacy being active, he found nothing noteworthy.
"What a waste of time, going here," he uttered.
Then he turned around with the plan to leave when the snow coming from above became abrupt and the wind began to whistle, making the trees sway every time it passed by.
Zeno raised his right hand and opened his palm.
’A snowstorm is coming,’ he blurted before looking behind him.
The scenery was still the same, but now he felt a pair of eyes staring at him from the center of the place. However, as he focused his gaze on it, he still saw nothing.
’Something’s strange,’ he thought before stepping onto the surface of the frozen lake.
As he continued to move towards the middle of it, the blizzard started to come and wreak havoc, causing damage to nearby trees and uprooting them into the air. The serene ambience of the place turned into a chaotic atmosphere that could freeze any human to death in just a few seconds.
Then several icicles flew into Zeno, aiming for different parts of his body. However, despite the projectiles remarkable speed, the demon evaded them with ease, leaning his head backward before glancing in the direction where the icicles came from. Aside from the rampaging snowstorm, he still saw nothing and even failed to track down the owner of the attack.
Then he looked at the icicles that had struck the ground. Each of them was emanating an unusual kind of energy that surprised Zeno. After that, he leaned in front of him and picked up one of the icicles.
"This is..." he uttered while knitting his brows.
But his thoughts were interrupted when hundreds of ice arrows rained down on him. As soon as he noticed the attack, he pulled out the black dice and tossed it above him, which soon turned into a jet-black shield, protecting him from the downpour of arrows.
"It’s not as simple as I’ve thought," Zeno said as he waited for the attack to die down.
While waiting, he threw the icicle at his back, aiming for a tree trunk. However, the icicle vanished all of a sudden into thin air, and a ripple appeared in the atmosphere, which solidified Zeno’s thoughts.
"The moment I stepped inside this lake, the place got distorted and became separated from Exgreia," he said, smiling due to his newfound discovery.
’And aside from those fairies, the only ones who can pull off this kind of trick are those vengeful beings, the revenants,’ he added inside his thoughts.
Then he glanced at the silhouette of a woman coming from the opposite side of the lake. She had silky, long black hair that reached the soles of her bare feet, and her eyes were even darker than Zeno’s weapon. Contrary to this, she was wearing a loose white robe that matched her pale skin. However, it was her lips that caught the demon’s attention; they had a light blue color that was very uncommon.
"A demon is not welcome here in this place," the woman blurted out as soon as she closed the distance from the silver-haired demon.
Then the rain of arrows stopped along with the blizzard, and Zeno retracted the shield back to its neutral form before replying to the woman’s words.
"As far as I remember, talking dead creatures are considered demonkinds, aren’t they?" Zeno replied.
"Silence!" The woman yelled and waved her hand, sending a sharp blade of ice with traces of undead energy in the demon’s direction.
Zeno stayed still, grinning, as he extended his hand forward and stopped the edge of the iceblade from moving any further. Then, as soon as he clenched his fist, it shattered into pieces. Though the revenant was not surprised by what happened, instead she blew a chilling mist that covered the entire lake. Seconds later, several images that looked exactly like her materialized and attacked the demon from all directions. Then Zeno danced as he dodged the attacks thrown at him. He was not using a weapon to deflect some of the projectiles, and his eyes were closed, yet not a single attack managed to hit him.
Upon seeing that her efforts were futile, the woman retracted the mist and asked.
"What do you want?" She said, bothered by the man’s presence.
Then Zeno opened his eyes and gave a wide grin.
"Nothing much, just the thing that made you like this," he uttered.
