Chapter 178: Sentinel of Records

Uoiea found her head spinning in a daze. She felt fear, yet for some unknown reason, she had this excitement in her thoughts, though maybe it was just her own curiosity about the woman’s identity.

As a strong individual, she hid the horror looming in the depths of her heart.

"So you really are the Eighth Sovereign," she stated while trying to calm herself.

’You can do it, Uoiea! All you just need to do is pull a card with a monster, kill it, and that’s it,’ she thought, giving herself a little boost.

The Eighth Sovereign let out a smile, but her eyes were filled with sadness and boredom. Then, the monster let go of Uoiea’s arm, and it stepped backward, giving the two women some space.

"What if I win? What would I get?" Uoiea asked out of curiosity, trying her luck.

The silver-haired demon pulled out a card and showed it to the princess. An image of a person was imprinted on it.

"I will let you pick a soul from my collections," Zeny stated.

However, Uoiea’s eyebrows narrowed upon hearing the reply, and she gave the demon a puzzled look.

"No, I mean I’ll let you have their Legacy. Isn’t that tempting?" Zeny elaborated.

Then she took a step forward and flicked her fingertips. Afterwards, thousands of cards materialized in the open air. All of them had the same back pattern, creating a towering wall tall enough to reach the horizon.

"I have here a few thousand species, from those tiny little insects up to monstrous giants," she said with a self-satisfied expression.

The next second, she waved her hand, and a card flipped, showing a white background with a creature that had three pairs of wings.

"I even have an angel in my stockpile," she added.

Then she stepped forward, and the cards in the air vanished. She stared at Uoiea while shuffling the deck in her hand.

"Do you have any more concerns?" She asked.

Uoiea was astounded upon seeing the cards. With just one wrong pick, she would end up like those, imprisoned in a thin rectangular object for eternity.

"Hmnn, if you wouldn’t mind me asking, why do you keep on collecting souls? Based on what you’ve shown me, it’s not just because of hunger," Uoiea answered with a question.

"It’s just a little obsession of mine, nothing more, nothing less," Zeny replied.

Then she waved her hand once more, and the deck of cards lined up in front.

"Now, shall we begin?" She asked.

Uoiea inhaled a deep breath and looked at the cards.

’Pick anything aside from the blank card,’ she repeated inside her head.

Then she extended her hand and put it at the top of the card she chose. It was the second to the last from the right.

Before getting it, she gulped a mouthful of saliva first and closed her eyes. Then, as soon as her fingertips touched its edge, she flipped it open.

With her eyes squinting, she slowly looked at the card she picked, and a sudden surge of joyfulness overwhelmed her. The edges of her lips curled into an upward grin upon seeing something was drawn on the card.

"I did it!" She exclaimed in delight.

The Eighth Sovereign applauded her for choosing wisely.

"How sad! You managed to escape being a prisoner. I already thought you would be a part of my collection," Zeny stated with a dull expression.

Then, the next second, she waved her hand, and all the cards flipped open. Uoiea was startled upon seeing all the remaining cards were blank.

"You’re really fortunate," the demon said.

Afterward, she flicked her fingers, and the card on the princess’ hand glowed a white hue before vanishing. Then, a creature emerged beside the sovereign. It had a humanoid frame while the entirety of its skin was covered in black-colored fur. Sharp claws digging on the ground and two tails dancing, floating at its back.

Uoiea stared at the monster, and she felt dumbfounded.

"W-What is that beast?" She stammered without averting her gaze from the beast’s headless body.

’First, a monster with just a mouth, and now a completely headless one,’ Uoiea conveyed at the back of her head.

Then, she noticed the monster’s body, and she gasped after seeing a pair of eyes looking at her, a nose, and a large mouth smiling on its chest.

’Quite disgusting,’ she thought.

"That’s a blemmyes, first time seeing one?" Zeny answered the woman’s curiosity.

As a reply, Uoiea shook her head, and then sparks of red lightning started to envelop her body. She prepared herself for the incoming fight.

"Red lightning, it’s beautiful!" Zeny exclaimed.

Then her lips curled up into a grin.

"Now, I’m more interested in who you really are," she added.

Afterward, she took a step backward, and the beast lunged at Uoiea with its sharp, elongated claws.

"Careful with those; they are poisonous," Zeny warned the human.

However, Uoiea already evaded; she tumbled upward and smacked the beast with her fist covered with lightning bolts. The ground was disintegrated as a giant explosion occurred, creating a large crater underneath.

Uoiea landed next to the beast; it showed no signs of movement, and a hole could be seen behind its back. However, the princess didn’t let her guard down; as long as the sovereign was not declaring her victory, the fight was still far from over.

And like what she had thought, the wound behind the monster’s back started to mend, and the creature soon stood on its feet. It looked at Uoiea before charging one more time. It used its right arm and swung its claws, aiming for the princess’ neck, but Uoiea didn’t evade. Instead, she raised her left hand, grabbing the monster’s wrist.

The next second, purple flames ignited with the blemmyes as their center. However, to her surprise, the creature emerged unscathed from the curtain of flames, lunging towards the princess.

Uoiea bent her knees to lower her body backward to dodge the attack, then she recovered her momentum and sent a ball of fire surrounded by red lightning towards the beast.

However, the projectile didn’t connect; the beast managed to evade it at the very last second. Afterward, it distanced itself from Uoiea, the eyes on its body staring at her.

Meanwhile, Zeny watched the fight with enthusiasm, but the excitement present on her face slowly disappeared as she saw the Blemmyes losing.

"She’s skilled, but still not enough to take it down," she commented while shuffling the cards on her palms.

The next second, the creature started to emit sparks of red lightning while its tails burned with purple flames.

Uoiea’s eyes lit up upon seeing the sudden change in her opponent.

"Can it copy my abilities?" She asked, confusion looming in her eyes.

The monster resumed its attack, its speed greatly enhanced by the red lightning. Though Uoiea still managed to evade, this time she wasn’t completely unharmed. A droplet of blood dripped from a cut on her neck.

Thus, she felt her head spinning in circles the next second. She shook her head and even blinked a few times, but the monster’s venom was quite intense.

Soon after, the sparks of lightning around her disappeared, and her legs lost their balance, making her fall on her knees.

"Now, what would you do?" Zeny stated; there was a hint of mockery in her voice.

Then, she ordered the beast to halt while she moved towards the woman’s direction, but a sudden white light descended; it came from above the clouds, which caused Zeny to halt her steps.

"Would you mind me interfering?" A voice resurfaced in the area.

Then, as the smoke receded, a figure of an old man came into view.

"I greet the Eighth Sovereign of Apathy," the old man said to the demon with a smile.

Zeny stared at the newly arrived individual, and after a few seconds, she returned the greeting.

"So it was you who brought her here. Did your goals change after a few millennia? I always thought that you were just an observer; would you mind explaining the reason behind this?" Zeny interrogated; her expression shifted in a complete one hundred eighty degrees. The little excitement on her face vanished as it was replaced by displeasure.

Then seconds after, five cards floating around Zeny began to emerge out of nowhere. They circled around her, and as soon as the images emitted light, they vanished inside the cards. Then names written in red capital letters appeared on both of her wrists, two on the left and three names on the right.

"Ahhh, you’re quite serious today, aren’t you?" The old man asked, shaking his head.

"Not really. I was enjoying myself a little while ago when you... all of a sudden interrupted my entertainment," the silver-haired demon stated.

At the same time, the blank cards around her shattered into fragments, and their tiny particles formed a jet-black scythe on her right hand. White skulls forming a circle were imprinted on its blade.

"I don’t mind killing you right here, right now. So please, before exhaling your last breath, scribble your very own death, Sentinel of Records," the Eighth Sovereign implied.
