The Demon King's First General -
Chapter 133: His Friend
Chapter 133: His Friend
The night passed in a blink of an eye, with Kizeler listening to the villager’s stories. All of the people went to sleep with joy painted on their faces. They were really glad about the two men’s arrival, even though the other one didn’t give them even a single glance.
Kizeler woke up from his sleep the next day; the sun was already up above the moment he walked out of the nipa hut. The villager’s smiles while doing their everyday lives were the first greeting he received.
"Good morning, how’s your sleep?" A bearded man asked.
He was chopping some wood with a large steel axe. Kizeler couldn’t help but stare at the man’s strong biceps.
’How I wish I had that kind of build,’ he thought, making a short sigh before returning the greeting.
"Good morning," he said with a smile, then looked around.
"Ahmmn, have you seen my companion?" He asked, as he couldn’t see even a single strand of silver hair.
"Oh! Your friend? He went to accompany the chief into the farm," the man replied.
Kizeler dropped his jaw upon hearing where Zeno was. He couldn’t believe that that lazy demon would have the initiative to go along with other humans.
’Come to think of it, he really never mess with others unless they provoke him, and those villagers are pretty good people,’ he thought.
Then he asked where the farm was, and he started walking in that direction.
. . . . .
In the little field where different kinds of plants, mostly vegetables, could be seen, three people were busy plowing the land to cultivate, while a woman was harvesting fruits from a nearby apple tree.
She was up on a ladder, plucking the ripe ones before throwing them to the silver-haired man standing next to the tree while holding a large basket.
"Here! Another one!" The woman exclaimed.
She was smiling as she gently threw the red apple toward the man.
Meanwhile, Zeno stared at the fruit hovering on his face and caught it with his palm. Then he wiped it on his coat’s helm before taking a bite.
"It tastes great, isn’t it?" The woman asked with a smile.
Afterward, she went down, and her eyes sparkled as she looked at the basket filled with apples.
"This is a really good harvest," she said.
Then again, she moved her eyes to glance at the man’s expressionless face in front of her. The curls on the corner of her lips and the blush on her cheeks were enough reasons to express her interest in the man.
However, she knew that they were worlds apart; she was a normal girl in a remote village, while the man standing in front of her exuded elegance from the way he dressed. She even suspected that he came from a nobility, and having a man like that have an interest in her was beyond reality.
"Are we done?" Zeno asked as he finished eating the apple.
"Y-Yes, we can go back now." The woman was startled, and her daydreaming was interrupted upon hearing Zeno’s voice for the first time.
On their way here and the little time they had spent together harvesting some fruits, he just nodded and followed her instructions without saying a single thing. He didn’t even ask for her name, and that made her a little bit sad, though she didn’t take it to heart.
The two of them began walking back to the village, and the woman couldn’t help but steal a few glances at the man beside her.
’He’s not even looking at me,’ she sighed at her own thought.
’I know I’m not that pretty, but... I’m not ugly either,’ she added, pouting while hoping that the man would notice her pathetic self.
"Jeysen," Zeno uttered all of a sudden.
Hearing her name from the man she had an interest in made the woman gulp and widen her eyes. She was surprised and glad at the same time.
"Y-Yes?" She answered while thinking about how Zeno knew her name.
’Maybe he heard it from the chief,’ she guessed, but didn’t delve into it any further.
She was happy that even though the silver-haired man seemed didn’t care, it looked like it wasn’t the case at all.
"Are you satisfied with a life like this?" Zeno asked without averting his eyes from the path ahead.
Jeysen froze due to that sudden question. She didn’t expect those words to come from a random stranger she just met yesterday.
"Plain and simple as it is, the village life is quite beautiful, I think," she replied, doing her best to force a smile.
"By the way, why are you asking?" She added as she resumed her steps to catch up to Zeno.
However, the demon didn’t respond; instead, he glanced at the woman beside him and stared for a second at her voluptuous chest.
His action did not remain unnoticed, as Jeysen saw his eyes staring at her bosom. This made her ears burn, and the redness on her face became almost similar to the apples she plucked.
’He... He’s staring at me. Does he want to marry me?’ She contemplated; her heart beat faster and louder as she thought more about it.
Then the words that Zeno asked her earlier caused her to lose her mind.
’C-Come to think of it, he asked if I was content with my life. Did he really mean it that way?’ She asked herself, trying to figure out what the demon was trying to convey.
"I-I’m not ready yet!" She blurted out, which caused Zeno to stop and look directly at her face.
Afraid that the man would notice her strange reactions, she covered her face with her hands and ran away. Then she fell to the ground a few seconds later as she bumped into another person.
"Ouch," she uttered while caressing her butt, and then, upon lifting her head, she noticed a hand extending in front.
"Are you alright?" Another man with a good-looking face yet an absurb hairstyle was leaning into her.
"I-I’m sorry!" She stood up, ignoring the man’s gesture, and left the area in a hurry.
Kizeler was left there dumbfounded as he stared at the woman’s track, then looked back at Zeno carrying a basket filled with apples. He had the urge to laugh but chose not to do so.
"Why did she run?" He asked before approaching the demon and getting a piece of apple.
"Who knows, and I don’t care either," Zeno replied.
Kizeler shook his head and made a casual laugh.
"Should we get going? I’ll see the chief and bid farewell then," he asked, yet he decided on his own.
After all, he was sure that Zeno would choose to leave as soon as possible. That was how he read the demon’s behavior; however, this time he was mistaken.
"Let’s stay here for a few more days. This village is not as boring as I’ve thought," Zeno said, and the grin on his lips sent chills down Kizeler’s spine.
Kizeler stopped on his track and put his free hand on his forehead before shaking his head.
"Now that I’ve heard it again, those not-boring things you refer to are those life-threatening things you like," he sighed upon his realization.
. . . . .
A few moments passed, and Kizeler and Zeno arrived at the village, and a woman’s wailing was the first thing that greeted the two of them.
As a concerned individual, Kizeler approached the villagers gathered around a certain woman, while Zeno just stood there, placed the basket on the ground, and got another apple to munch on.
Kizeler was surprised upon seeing that the woman crying was the mother of the child who came to him yesterday night. He squeezed himself into the crowd and crouched down in front of the woman.
"What’s the matter?" He asked with a straight face.
Upon seeing him, the woman grabbed him by the shirt and cried louder.
"My.. My s-son, he’s been missing since this morning," she sobbed.
"We thought he was just playing somewhere, but we already searched for him in the entire village and nearby areas, but he was nowhere to be found," a villager stated.
"Please! Please, help me find my son!" The woman pleaded as she shed more tears.
Kizeler couldn’t look into her any further, as he just nodded and clenched his fist. He stood up and roamed his eyes, searching for his demon companion.
Upon seeing him still in the place he left him, he went straight into him and was about to speak, but Zeno did it first.
"I’ve heard everything," he said as he took another bite from the apple in his hand.
’I really envy the demon’s capabilities,’ Kizeler thought before he spoke.
"Then do you know where he is? Can you feel his presence?" He asked with uncertainty, hoping that the demon would give the answer he hoped for.
However, seeing him shake his head, he couldn’t help but grit his teeth in dismay. Then he placed his fingers on his temple and massaged them in a circular motion.
’If this bastard couldn’t even feel where he was, how am I supposed to do so?’ He contemplated.
He was so absorbed by his thoughts that Zeno flicked the apple’s pulp into his face just to capture his attention.
"What was that for?" Kizeler exclaimed.
"You’re thinking too much," Zeno replied before taking a step forward.
He placed both of his hands inside his coat’s pocket and smiled while staring further ahead.
"The first thing you need to do is ask," he said, which confused Kizeler even more.
"But no one from the villagers knew where he went," Kizeler replied.
"You really are a dimwit; I’m not talking about them. Didn’t he tell you last night about his friend?" Zeno stated, and the red dice in his ear spun.
