Chapter 106: Another tormenting dream

The king smiled bitterly when he heard this. The seer had already said it was hopeless. Nothing could stand against heaven’s wrath.

"I know my body best, and I can tell that I am nearing my end," he said.

Of course, he did not want to die, but he had thought about it. If he does not make arrangements earlier, he might have made so many sacrifices only to die early for another to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

The queen looked at the king and did not know how to respond. After all, he had stated it so clearly.

"I want to make preparations. Our sons are not in the royal city, and anyone can make a move after my sudden death. Moreover, someone is behind my poisoning. I am worried that he might eliminate the mole he used before we find them. If an antidote is not made in time, I will definitely die," the king said. He sounded as though he truly believed he had been poisoned.

"Your Majesty, what can we do?" Queen Mary panicked. If someone was indeed behind the poisoning, he might already understand the king’s condition. The Queen wonder why she had forgotten this important point.

"I want to send the king’s seal and scepter of authority to the crown prince in the north," the king said.

"Your Majesty, this is dangerous. You said that someone is behind this poisoning. If we send those two things out of the palace, would that not be delivering them straight into his hands?" Queen Mary asked. She was not foolish. Anyone capable of poisoning the king would definitely keep an eye on the royal family.

"Not necessarily. We have to act fast. This is why, in the next few days, you must make the investigation into the poisoning as public as possible. This way, the person behind it will be forced to lay low," the king said.

Of course, he knew that no one had poisoned him, but he also understood that many were ambitious and had their eyes on the royal family. If he were to suddenly die, a few would be greedy enough to try and steal the throne; especially with his two legitimate sons outside the royal city.

The seal of the king and the scepter of authority were recognized by all in the Nixel Kingdom. Their power was even greater than that of the crown itself. In any case, without possessing these two objects, no one could wear the crown.

"Then let us send a trusted man," Queen Mary said. She felt that her husband had great foresight.

"There are no trusted people at this time. Everyone is greedy for power," the king said. He was at death door, he did not believe his trusted aid would be loyal to a deaf man.

"Then I will send it myself," the queen decided. After hearing the king’s words, she realized that she could trust no one but herself.

"If I am seriously ill and you leave the palace, many people will suspect the situation," the king paused. "The best person to go is our daughter-in-law," King George said.

"Your Majesty," Queen Mary frowned. She did not trust Anastasia. To her, Anastasia was the kind of person who would dare to consume poison just to find a way out. What if, after holding those two items, she found a way to take advantage of the situation for herself?

If it had been before her status as a legitimate daughter was restored, she might have risked it. But now, even General Robert and others were willing to treat her as family. It felt too risky.

"She is the best candidate. First, no one would ever imagine that we would dare give her something so important to her. Second, she does not have to know that she is delivering something of such value. Just make arrangements for her to send provisions to her husband. The war has started, and they are still a young couple. It would not seem suspicious for her to send supplies. Arrange guards to protect her, but she must carry these two items with her. Let her know they are valuable," the king said. There was no problem with Anastasia knowing she was delivering something valuable to the prince as long as she was ignorant of it real value.

The last reason he chose Anastasia was that he still trusted the seer the most. The seer had said she had good fortune, so he was certain she would reach the northern border safely.

"Your Majesty..." The queen was still worried, but she understood her husband’s plan.

"Just do as I say. Make the arrangements today. It just so happens that I heard the people of Gube has sneak into our kingdom as spies and stole military supplies. So, it will not be too suspicious for us to send provisions at this time. The timing is perfect," the king said.

Hearing this, the queen took a deep breath. "I will listen to Your Majesty," she said.

She had been thinking that if the king died before their son could return, she would take over the position of monarch on his behalf. However, upon learning that the king had been poisoned, she realized the palace might not be safe. Allowing their son to receive these two items and claim the throne would be the best option. Even if those within the royal city grew restless, they could not seize power without those two objects.

The king then directed her to where the items were kept in his study. "Remember, no one must know that you have taken these two items. We cannot alert the snake," the king said. He asked always been careful when dealing with things.

"I understand," the queen nodded. She felt fortunate that all those who had served the king were currently being tortured. This meant she could enter his study and retrieve the items without others knowing. After all, at this point, no one could be trusted.

"I will let Your Majesty rest while I go and make the arrangements," the queen added.

The king nodded and watched as the queen left.

After she was gone, the king suddenly felt tired and could not keep himself from falling asleep. The antidote Physician Nathan had given him was quite strong. Although it had not cured him, it had made him drowsy.

The king had not wanted to sleep. Since the previous night, every time he closed his eyes, he saw his brother smiling at him. He felt as though he was at death’s door. But no matter how much he wanted to keep his eyes open, he succumbed to sleep and entered yet another tormenting dream.
