Chapter 25: 25- Jai Was The Only One

Phoenix:

The door swung open, and Beta Brian stormed in along with Alpha Blake. Brian had a wild look in his eyes as he was the one who was naturally most worried about his brother.

"We got to know what happened," Blake seemed to be freaking out inside.

I blinked at them, taking a shaky breath, "Even I am confused," I rubbed my forehead with my thumb, "I just don’t know how I did it." I watched my hands in confusion.

There was dead silence now.

My chair was pulled really close to Jai’s hospital bed. We were moved from the room that had the smell of burnt wires and smoke.

One of the walls had ugly black marks on it. Broken pieces of a monitor were lying around there. It was a mess.

A larger hand moved to mine and held it in his. Jai’s fingers were loose around mine. He was weirdly chill and was smiling like a fool.

He had been my biggest support system in the pack who never allowed even his beta brother to be stern to me.

His hospital gown looked wrinkled, but he looked fine. Way too fine for someone out cold an hour ago.

Brian was leaning over his brother, whispering something in his ear, while I could feel Alpha Blake’s eyes on me.

"Is there anything you didn’t tell us?" This unexpected question made my heart skip a beat.

"Wrong question, Alpha," Jai spoke in a not-so-weak voice, "This girl just healed me, and instead of asking her how we can use her healing power for our pack’s advantage, you’re asking her if she is hiding something..." Brian was trying to relax his brother, but Alpha Blake seemed unfazed by the emotional dialogue.

"She is a warrior and was supposed to protect you!" Alpha Blake’s hands balled into fists.

Jai’s hand tightened around mine, and I could feel the heat rising in the room.

"She saved me, Blake!" He snapped, "I’m alive because of her! If she wasn’t here, you’d be picking out a damn coffin right now!"

Brian, who was standing near him, tried to calm him down and tried to say something, but Jai pinned him with a glare that made him shut his mouth really fast.

Jai always favored me like a true friend, but today he was fighting his own brother and the Alpha of his pack.

"And you..." He scowled at Blake, sitting up a little, and then flinched.

I quickly got up to hold him, but he stopped me by shaking his head at me. He turned back to Blake, "You’re standing here like crap, acting like she did something wrong. Without her wolf, she proved herself and got there with her hard work, and that’s how you’ll repay her? Screw that!"

"Goddess! Stop!" I leaned ahead and hugged him.

"Just see what he is uttering... all that bullshit. He had some balls!" I tried to suppress the smile that broke on my lips and tried hiding my face in his shoulder.

"Shh..." I tried consoling him, "It’s alright, sweetheart. We are good here. He means well. As an Alpha, he cares for us... Come on, big guy. He needs to run this pack."

I turned my head a little and noticed Alpha Blake’s jaw ticking. I was sure he must be clenching his jaw harder.

"Jai. You need to rest," Brian tapped his shoulder. I moved back to give them some room.

"Get out!" Jai’s voice was low but dangerous, "Both of you right now."

Nobody moved.

"I said get out!" he barked, maybe loud enough to let the whole hospital hear him. Brian grabbed Blake’s arm, tugging him towards the door, his face pale.

Blake looked like he wanted to argue, but in the end, he turned around stiffly and walked out without another word.

The door shut behind them with a heavy thud.

Jai slumped back against the bed, breathing heavier, but he didn’t let go of my hand.

"I... I don’t want to lose you," his eyes fluttered as he was about to faint.

"Jai..." I quickly helped him lean back again, "I should call the doctor."

But he denied it with a subtle shake of his head and at last a slow smile crept to his lips, "How you did it, my se*xy warrior."

"Did what? Are you asking about healing?" I shrugged and raised my hands to show him, "Maybe Moon Goddess wants to bless me with some magic," I winked at him.

He praised my hand and kissed it, "One moment I was talking to her," he chuckled, "and the next moment she pushed me back into this body."

I thought I heard him wrong.

"You what?"

He nodded with a sigh, "I almost died, warrior. And I met her. She is beautiful," he murmured, closing his eyes.

"We both were waiting for the machines to show that straight line, when suddenly you healed me. How did you do that?"

Instead of answering his question, I looked at him with puppy eyes, "Did she talk to you?" I asked him with a fond smile, "Is she beautiful?"

"Yes, she is," there was a sad smile on his face, "She asked me if I wanted to come back..." he then looked up to lock his eyes with me, "And I said yes."

I tried to swallow this unexpected lump in my throat, "Thank you for saying yes," I whispered.

"I had to," he exhaled a sigh, "though she warned me that this is the only time you are healing me."

I freed my hand from his grip, "What do you mean?"

He shrugged and closed his eyes as if he was too tired to speak, "She told me that today you’re healing me. But one day... There will be a day when I’ll be dying before your eyes and you won’t heal me, won’t care for me."

I stood up in panic, "That’s not possible," I started shaking my head, "That’s never going to happen. No matter what. I won’t leave you," Tears started streaming down my face, "I don’t know why Moon Goddess was uttering that crap. Because if that healing power stays with me, then you will be the first one to receive it. Always!"

Not caring that he was a patient who was recovering from his injury, I bent forward and rested my forehead on his chest.

He didn’t seem to mind it and started stroking my hair.

Moon Goddess! You wrecked everything in my life. Jai was the only one who stayed behind. Please don’t take him away from me. Please, Moon Goddess. Please...
