Chapter 234: Chapter 198
In the morning, people from above took Mo Junhua, Li Hong, and others away.
......
"You’re willing to come back?" Mayor Wei looked up at his son. No one visits without a reason; ever since his son had joined the army, he seldom came home unless he needed something.
"You see, how could I not come back to my own home? I’ve just been busy! Dad, do you know whose granddaughter Mo Junhua’s wife is?" Wei chuckled mischievously.
Mo Junhua?
He knew of him. He had gotten into some trouble recently!
How could he not know his own son? There must be a deep meaning behind this sudden visit.
Mayor Wei asked, "Who?"
"Mr. Mo."
This teaches us a lesson: you realize how good your marriage is when it matters most.
When he had found out, he had even felt a pang of envy. What good deeds had he done in his past life to marry Mr. Mo’s granddaughter, a great beauty no less? Don’t ask him how he knew; he had personally handled their marriage certificate.
After some pondering, he concluded that fools are blessed with their own kind of luck.
Who would have thought that Lan Tian would turn out to be Mr. Mo’s granddaughter!
Mr. Mo was not just a simple National Doctor. His network was very complex, having been cultivated for decades. He wielded influence not only over Shanghai but also held a place in Beijing’s elite circles.
Mayor Wei understood that he couldn’t just go by what his son said; they would have to see the results of the investigation.
Mayor Wei picked up the stack of documents and read them, his expression growing increasingly grim. Wei glanced over and let out a sound, "Dad, you see? This is our opportunity."
With a damp finger, he wrote a certain surname on the table, "What about him?"
Mayor Wei glanced at the character, took a sip of his tea from the cup, the cold tea tasting bitter, but he seemed not to notice as he pondered and neared the bottom of his cup. His face darkened further, "He has no successor."
Without a successor, even the most prominent families will struggle to continue their legacy.
"Dad, don’t forget he has an outstanding grandson."
"I heard his grandson has been frail and sickly since childhood."
"Dad, word has it Mr. Mo has gone out to visit friends!"
"Clang!"
Mayor Wei’s teacup fell to the ground, a crisp sound echoing in the study. Panic-stricken, he stood up, suddenly grabbed the documents from the table, and rushed out.
"I’m going to see your grandpa; you have nothing to do here. Go back to your unit. I’m tired of seeing you loafing around day after day; you’re a headache."
Wei was scolded by his father but felt particularly delighted inside, cheerfully humming as he left. The people in the Wei family’s residence looked at him with strange eyes. How could Wei not be happy? If this worked out, how could Mo Junhua be so fortunate, always having people like him to support him? Next time, he’d have to ask for a few more bottles of wine from him, to make up for all the effort he put into running around for him.
......
Not to mention the undercurrents surging and the changing climates in Shanghai.
After Tian Xianghua left, Lan Tian thought about how many things in this world had deviated from their original trajectory. Things from her past life could not be used as reference; the future was unpredictable.
Regaining her composure, it was already dark outside. Beneath the window, a river of stars stretched across the sky. Lan Tian blinked and realized why it was pitch black inside. She turned on the light, took a bath, went to the study and practiced the Cleansing Heart Technique, then went to bed.
Abnormally, Lan Tian slept until ten in the morning. After a good rest, she washed up and after much deliberation, she wore a fiery red dress. She cooked a large pot of Spirit Rice Porridge for breakfast and slowly sipped Spiritual Tea, nestled in the wicker chair reading miscellaneous records.
"Sister-in-law, we’ve come to take you to the battalion headquarters. There are some matters we need to inquire about," said the people from the battalion headquarters who came to fetch her around noon. Among the three that came, she recognized two: Su Qing and Zhang Tian; the other was a stranger, an officer.
"Okay." Lan Tian put away the book, closed the stove, locked the door, and went with Su Qing and others to the battalion headquarters. Downstairs, Tian Xianghua was looking after the children, watching her with concern. Lan Tian responded with a reassuring smile before getting into the car.
The car swayed towards the battalion headquarters. Lan Tian braced her forehead with one hand as she watched the scenery pass by the window. It was her first time going to the battalion headquarters. She had heard that the battalion commander was about the same age as Mo Junhua, and the two had a very close relationship. Mo Junhua’s present status was in no small part due to his own efforts, but also the support of the camp commander.
"Sister-in-law, we only want to ask you some minor things, no need to be nervous or worried. Feel free to answer or not; nobody dares to force you," said Su Qing suddenly as he turned around in front, then turned back quickly, sitting up straight but somehow looking a bit stiff.
Lan Tian was startled, then realized he was kindly reminding her. She smiled faintly, "Okay."
Zhang Tian twitched his mouth, giving Su Qing a peculiar look. Even he, always so hasty and impulsive, had the nerve to warn someone else. Out of the corner of his eye, he glanced at the Camp Commander’s Wife. After two years, she seemed largely unchanged, yet somehow different - more ethereal and other-worldly than before.
"We’ll reach the battalion headquarters in a little over two hours. Sister-in-law, you can rest for a while," Zhang Tian suddenly said.
Lan Tian looked back at him and nodded, "Okay."
The rest of the journey was silent.
......
The battalion commander himself waited at the door to welcome Lan Tian. Given the gravity of the situation, the young lady had never experienced such things before, and he would have to gently guide her. If she were to be frightened into saying something unfounded, it could ruin their plans.
It wasn’t just the battalion commander waiting at the door - there were also several military men standing with him. These were not his own men, but investigators sent from above.
As the car stopped, Su Qing and Zhang Tian alighted first, with Zhang Tian standing by the open car door. Su Qing hurried over to wait on the side. When the car parked, Lan Tian guessed they had arrived, opened her eyes, and looked out to see Zhang Tian and Su Qing standing by the car door, and a few people standing at the distant door looking towards their car.
Lan Tian got out of the car, her gaze briefly flitting over Su Qing and Zhang Tian. Su Qing looked baffled, while Zhang Tian took a step forward and to the side. Lan Tian walked forward, Zhang Tian kept pace, speaking to Lan Tian, "The one in the middle up ahead is our Wei, the battalion commander. To the left of the commander is our battalion’s Chief of Staff, and the others are the ones from above that have come to ask the sister-in-law about the Camp Commander’s matters."
Lan Tian gave Zhang Tian a knowing look with a slight smirk, worthy of being Mo Junhua’s right-hand man.
