Chapter 103: 89

There’s a rumor going around the village, Mo Yuanle knows it, but he doesn’t care, no one can force the girl if she’s unwilling, and he wouldn’t allow anyone the chance to coerce her.

Who would have known when he returned from the field, everything had turned upside down.

Calling Lan Tian to join him at the Medicine House, not uttering a word, he just sat there silently watching Lan Tian.

Time flew by so quickly, in the blink of an eye, the girl had grown up, old enough to marry. If it weren’t for Zhao Li telling him, in his heart, the girl was still the six or seven-year-old child. The child who would secretly hide in the yard waiting to scare him when he returned; the child who’d sit at his feet, eyes shining as she watched him wash the herbs; the child who, when her hair bun was messed up, would get so angry she’d stomp her feet.

The little girl has now grown into a young lady.

In this family, if you say who dotes on Lan Tian the most, it’s not Grandma Sun, nor is it Zhao Li, but Mo Yuanle. He spoils her unconditionally, without reason or shame, often covering up for Lan Tian and keeping secrets from Grandma Sun and Zhao Li. In modern terms, Mo Yuanle could be considered Lan Tian’s die-hard fan; if Lan Tian said farts were spicy, he would never say they were fragrant.

It’s precisely for this reason that Lan Tian felt very sorry for him, hanging her head down and swinging her feet, occasionally stealing glances at him.

Mo Yuanle straightened his face, "Think it through."

Lan Tian looked up at him, her expression serious, "I’ve thought it through."

"If he bullies you, come back and tell uncle, I’ll make the decision for you."

"Yeah!" Lan Tian smiled, her eyes curving, and that was the end of the conversation between uncle and niece.

After dinner, Grandma Sun said she wanted to go out for a walk. Zhao Li and Mo Yuanle didn’t think much of it, as it was common for the elderly villagers to stroll around after dinner to digest and chat. Lan Tian noticed she didn’t even take her stool, just walked off in the fan, and knew she was going to talk with Mo Junhua, as for what, Lan Tian could roughly guess.

Grandma Sun didn’t head straight for Wang Guiyu’s house. She wandered around the village first, and as if by chance, she passed by the front of Wang Guiyu’s house, glanced inside, then entered.

During this time, Wang Guiyu’s house was overcrowded and the atmosphere was oppressive, with the family not going out. When Grandma Sun entered, everyone thought she came to check on the two sick people at home, considering how often people from Sun’s house have been coming over, nobody thought much of it, except for Chunlai’s wife.

Grandma Sun is stubborn and doesn’t have the best temper, once she decides on something she won’t back down even if she hits the south wall. She owes Mo Junhua, and if Mo Junhua asks, she would definitely agree, but she doesn’t owe anything to Wang Guiyu and his family. It’s one thing for the girl to be willing, but it’s another to be manipulated by someone else.

Chunlai’s wife had the audacity to scheme against her girl; Grandma Sun won’t cover for her, and right there with the whole family present, she lightly spilled the beans.

Wang Guiyu in the bed was so ashamed after hearing it, wishing he could crawl into a crack in the ground; Chunhua had the expression of having seen a ghost as she stared at him; and Mo Junhua’s face grew even colder.

Chuntao didn’t say a word, but from the smile in her eyes, she seemed to approve; Mo Junhua’s father, Chunlai, and Jun Guo, the two brothers, were confused, clearly out of the loop and unable to grasp the situation. Jun Guo’s wife, not her business, she just sat on the side and secretly watched the drama.

Chunlai’s wife was defiant, crossing her eyes and arching her neck, with an attitude of indifference.

"I can’t agree to this." The only person who opposed on the spot was Mo Junhua.

This was said very skillfully. Mo Junhua said he couldn’t agree, not that he didn’t agree. "Can’t agree" indicates there’s still room for manoeuvre; perhaps something unforeseeable might happen along the way, and he might agree. "Don’t agree" means a very firm and definitive refusal, with no hint of reconsideration.

Not a single person in the room could decipher the meaning behind his words.

Hearing his refusal, Chuntao and Chunlai’s wife were furious at him for his lack of ambition, both glaring at him with anger. Chunhua breathed a sigh of relief, she knew that Sanwa was not that kind of person, and would never stoop to profiting from others’ misfortunes.

Grandma Sun knew of his character and now seeing him refuse, her gaze turned somewhat more approving. Wang Guiyu was utterly embarrassed, Chunlai’s wife had gone behind her back to Sun’s house to pressure for a marriage proposal; if the village found out, they would surely talk behind her back and criticize her spine. She thought, ’That dead woman, let’s settle the score once I get better.’

The situation was now laid out in the open, and everyone assumed that Sun’s house did not agree with the proposal, which was why they came to expose Chunlai’s wife, causing her to be in an awkward position both inside and outside. Once Chunlai grasped what was happening, he felt extremely uncomfortable seeing Grandma Sun, he fiercely glared at his wife as if he was fed up with her actions.

Everyone in the room was waiting for Grandma Sun to leave.

"Hua Zi, I’m here because I have something else to discuss with you." Grandma Sun said to Mo Junhua while shaking her fan.

Mo Junhua was silent for a few seconds, and then took Grandma Sun into his room to talk, leaving the door half open. While they could see what was happening outside, those outside could not hear anything from inside the room.

Chuntao left the hall and glanced at Mo Junhua inside the room, then took a step towards his window. Chunhua saw through her intentions at a glance and dragged her back into her room to lock her in.

Seeing this, Chunlai’s wife huffed a few times and went back to her room holding her child, while Jun Guo’s wife, sensing things were not right, had slipped away early. The three grown men in the room also shamefacedly went back to their rooms.

Nobody knew what Grandma Sun and Mo Junhua talked about. Mo Junhua remained stern and unfazed, and it was harder than ascending to heaven for the family members to read anything from his face. After talking with him, Grandma Sun went to see Wang Guiyu, telling her to take care of herself and not to worry needlessly, as it would only wear her out, then she left.

Mo Junhua sat in his room for a while, then suddenly went to Wang Guiyu’s room. After a brief conversation, he returned to his room without disturbing anyone else. After hearing what he said, Wang Guiyu looked stunned, it took her a long time to snap back to reality.

Had she heard wrong? Was that what he meant? Wang Guiyu thought she must’ve had a problem with her ears. How come she heard Sanwa telling her to find a matchmaker tomorrow to propose a marriage at Sun’s house?

Proposing marriage? But wasn’t Sun’s house not in agreement? Didn’t Sanwa also refuse? Why suddenly make a marriage proposal?

Proposal!

Suddenly, Wang Guiyu let out a shrill scream, leaping frantically off the bed and running barefoot towards Mo Junhua’s room. The terrifying shriek caught everyone in the house off guard, startling them. The two daughters-in-law cursed her as a madwoman behind her back, turned over, and went back to sleep, leaving her to her own devices.

Chuntao and Chunhua, thinking something had happened to their mother, hastily came out of the room. They just saw Wang Guiyu running barefoot towards Mo Junhua’s room, with both sisters following her from behind.

Wang Guiyu’s face was full of surprise, "Sanwa, did you just tell me to go to Grandma Sun’s house to propose a marriage? Did you?"

Mo Junhua wasn’t asleep, lying on the bed reading a book, as if he knew she would come and he was waiting for her.

He turned a page and gave a faint ’mm-hmm’.

Wang Guiyu didn’t care about Mo Junhua’s attitude at all and sat down to press him further, "Did Sun’s family agree?"

Mo Junhua again gave a faint ’mm-hmm’.
