Chapter 101: 87

"Chuntao, you have no idea, my third brother’s leg... Rumors are flying everywhere; all the nearby villages know about it, and none who have daughters are willing to marry them to him," came the murmur from the corner. Upon seeing Chuntao look over, Jun Guo’s wife shrank back and bowed her head.

Like a piece of backdrop cloth, Mo Junhua remains indifferent to the commotion his family is in over his affairs, even cold.

The family discussed back and forth, but could not come up with a good solution. Everybody was talking at once, this wouldn’t work, that wouldn’t work, and eventually, having run out of ideas, they all fell silent.

Mr. Mo puffed on his dry tobacco, sighing and hanging his head low.

Chunlai’s wife seemed to have thought of something, her eyes darting, coughed a few times to draw the family’s attention before speaking up again: "Why did third brother’s leg end up lame? Because he saved Grandma Sun and got hit by a car, becoming crippled. That’s why the girl and her family look down on him and want to break off the engagement."

Everyone in the room turned to look at Chunlai’s wife.

"Everything has a cause; we’re reasonable people in this house. The root of this issue is Grandma Sun, so her family should be the one to bear the consequences. Paying back debts is a matter of course, the same as a son inheriting his father’s debts. Third brother can’t find a wife, doesn’t their family have a girl ready to be married?"

"Who?" Chunhua asked, baffled. Apart from Lan Tian, since when did Grandma Sun’s family have another girl?

Chunlai’s wife smiled smugly, "Of course it’s Lan Tian. Apart from her, who else could they have but another granddaughter in Grandma Sun’s family?"

There was a fleeting flicker in Mo Junhua’s indifferent eyes that quickly disappeared.

Chuntao glanced at her third brother’s leg and thought the idea was excellent!

Upon hearing her sister-in-law’s words, Jun Guo’s wife’s face registered surprise, and she quickly lowered her head to conceal her amused snicker, thinking her sister-in-law was pretty wicked to come up with such a rotten scheme.

Chunhua stared wide-eyed in shock, Lan Tian was so young, and her sister-in-law actually set her sights on Lan Tian. She couldn’t believe it and looked at her with disappointment, saying, "Sister-in-law, how can you say such a thing? Third brother is so much older, Lan Tian is so young, marrying her to third brother is unfair to her. Aren’t you afraid of the villagers talking behind our backs?"

Chunlai’s wife rolled her eyes and scoffed, "Oh, look at Chunhua, playing the good Samaritan. Look at her, ever since she became friends with Lan Tian, she’s changed, become more talkative, more courageous, her loyalties have shifted, favoring outsiders over her own family."

"I haven’t!" Chunhua retorted, her face turning green with anger, her sister-in-law’s words cutting deep.

"Yes, yes, you haven’t, but I have, there, happy? You think it’s unfair for Lan Tian, then take a look at your third brother’s leg. Is that fair to him? He’s become a cripple; will the army still want him? Just wait for your third brother to remain a bachelor for life!"

Chunlai’s wife then left after throwing out that last remark.

"I also disagree with this." Mo Junhua made his stance clear before returning to his room.

After leaving the house, Chunlai’s wife took a stroll around the village and headed towards Grandma Sun’s house.

Zhao Li was washing vegetables in the courtyard when she saw Chunlai’s wife push open the gate. She thought Wang Guiyu might be unwell.

"Chunlai’s wife, you’re here looking for Mo Yuanle, he’s gone to the fields, and the girl is at home. I’ll go call her for you; please have a seat first," Zhao Li stood up to call Lan Tian, but Chunlai’s wife stopped her.

"Auntie, I’m not here to see Uncle Five, my mom Chunhua is watching over him, I came to find you and Grandma Sun."

Chunlai’s wife stood at the door looking into the house and didn’t see Grandma Sun, so she asked, "Is Grandma Sun not at home? I have something to discuss with you both."

Zhao Li found it odd, wondering what Chunlai’s wife could possibly want to talk to them about, since she never visits their house.

"My aunt is lighting the fire in the kitchen. Whatever it is, let’s go sit in the hall and talk about it, I’ll go call her."

In the kitchen, Grandma Sun heard from Zhao Li that Chunlai’s wife had something to discuss with them and came out from the kitchen.

Lan Tian was practicing her calligraphy inside the house, and as soon as Chunlai’s wife arrived, she knew. What baffled her was why Chunlai’s wife would need to speak with her grandma. That woman was no easy one; she wouldn’t show up without a reason. Somewhat concerned and unable to focus on her writing, she decided to stop and instead used her Divine Sense to eavesdrop on their conversation.

"Grandma Sun, Fifth Aunt, actually, I shouldn’t really be the one talking about this, but you both know the situation at our house. My mother is bedridden, and I, being the eldest sister-in-law, have to take care of everything inside and out – I can’t just ignore family matters!"

Both Zhao Li and Grandma Sun nodded, saying, "You have it tough."

Chunlai’s wife had a look of unspeakable suffering on her face.

"Because of my third brother’s accident, my mother got sick; she refuses to eat or take her medicine, and everyone in the family is frowning and sighing every day. The whole village nearby knows about my third brother being abandoned by his fiancée due to his lame leg, and it has caused incessant quarrelling at home. It won’t be long before our family falls apart." Chunlai’s wife seemed genuinely sad toward the end, even wiping away tears from the corner of her eye.

Lan Tian snorted. Wasn’t she the very one who argued all the time?

The Mo Junhua’s family’s woes were the talk of many gossips in the village; there were always some who couldn’t wait to spread the word, and one would hear a bit whenever they went out. Grandma Sun and Zhao Li did not understand her intentions and felt it inappropriate to comment further.

"My third brother is tight-lipped like a clam; he only keeps things bottled up inside. My mother’s sickness is psychological. If my third brother gets married, her health will immediately improve. But you also know the situation since my brother is lame, all the families with eligible daughters in the nearby villages are unwilling to marry them off to us."

Grandma Sun looked ashamed, and Zhao Li’s face began to show displeasure. What did Chunlai’s wife mean by coming to their place with such words? Was she implying it was their fault Hua Zi couldn’t find a wife? It’s not like they prevented the girls from marrying him.

"Our family keeps saying, Hua Zi’s leg isn’t really lame, and he’ll be able to walk normally in a few days. Once he starts walking normally, the villagers will see, and those rumors will collapse on their own. By then, there will be girls willing to marry into your family."

Chunlai’s wife’s visit was obviously not well-intentioned, and Zhao Li didn’t have a good impression of her.

Upon hearing this, Chunlai’s wife couldn’t help but laugh, finding it absurd. "Auntie, if someone unaware of the truth tells you that a man isn’t lame and suggests you marry your granddaughter Lan Tian to him, would you believe it?"

Grandma Sun also knew Chunlai’s wife’s visit wasn’t for a simple matter. She spoke up, "Chunlai’s wife, what exactly are you here for? If there’s anything we can help with, as long as it’s within our means, our family will certainly help."

"It’s always Grandma Sun who’s understanding," Chunlai’s wife finally showed a smile, glancing toward Zhao Li, and Zhao Li knew exactly what she meant: she was implying Zhao Li was not understanding at all.

"I’m here regarding my third brother. After all, he got injured while saving Grandma Sun. Of course, he’s a soldier, and saving people is his duty. I’m not bringing this up to demand repayment, but the fact is, girls are spurning my third brother because they dislike his disability."

Grandma Sun and Zhao Li listened, growing more confused, not understanding what she was trying to imply.

Lan Tian was speechless. She’s already at the door talking about it, and yet she says she isn’t asking for something in return?
