The Country Maiden: Fields and Leisure -
Chapter 526 - 524
Chapter 526: 524
Old Lady Sun spat contemptuously, "The Wang Family now doesn’t even recognize their own daughter, so why would they recognize a grandson? Poor my eldest grandson and granddaughter-in-law, it was their first time visiting their maternal grandparents’ house, and this is the reception they get!" After saying that, she started rolling on the ground again.
Old Granny Zhang couldn’t hold back any longer and wanted to step forward to speak, but Wang Yongzhu stopped her, "Let her cry, let her roll, let’s see how long she can keep it up!"
Wang Yongzhu had seen through it, today the Sun Family was determined to stick to the Wang Family, so she might as well accommodate them.
She immediately pulled Old Granny Zhang into the kitchen to comfort her.
Meanwhile, the helping matrons enjoyed the spectacle while not slacking off in their work, with the meat already in the pot, sizzling and letting out a delectable aroma that filled the courtyard.
In another pot, the sauce was ready, fragrant, and the fish was boiling, bubbling away and wafting out bursts of fresh scent.
The Sun Family members hadn’t had a full meal all morning, and with the aroma of meat and fish reaching their noses, they couldn’t stand it.
Sun Laoer was the first to swallow hard and whispered, "They weren’t lying, there really is meat and fish."
Old Lady Sun’s rolling slowed down, and Shitou’s Wife tugged at Sun Shitou’s clothes, "Shitou, I’m hungry!"
Sun Shitou’s stomach was also growling, the scent of meat and fish was like tiny hooks, pulling his soul toward the pots.
Sun Daming was the steadiest of the lot but also secretly swallowed his saliva. He looked again at his mother, still rolling on the ground, though more slowly, and couldn’t help but complain. Knowing that the Wang Family was going to have meat and fish for lunch, why did they have to make such a fuss?
Now that the Wang Family had money and their family was seeking the Wangs’ favor, couldn’t they humble themselves a bit? Did they really think that the Wangs were like his own mother, totally spineless and to be kneaded at will?
After making such a scene, it wasn’t just a matter of losing face, but how could they soften their stance toward the Wang Family now?
However, smelling the meaty aroma, Sun Daming gritted his teeth, and even though there was no slope, he decided he had to build one himself to give his family a way out.
After thinking for a bit, Sun Daming whispered something to Sun Laoer, who’s eyes lit up, and he nodded incessantly.
He turned and ran to Old Lady Sun, whispered something to her, and then Old Lady Sun stopped rolling. She flipped over neatly and got up, dusting herself off as if nothing had happened.
Seizing the moment, Sun Daming knelt down, "Father, Mother, about today’s matter, we were in the wrong! It’s just that my mother is old, and if she has said or done something wrong, as her son, I’m here to offer apologies on her behalf! I beg you, Father and Mother, Third Brother, and my younger sister, not to take it to heart."
"Our two families are close kin. It would be really unworthy if we let such a small matter damage our relations. Why not let bygones be bygones, and just forget about this whole affair, to avoid giving others a reason to laugh at our families."
Wang Laozhu listened to Sun Daming’s reasonable words, and his expression softened a bit. He was actually inclined to go along with what Sun Daming had said and call it even, but his little daughter hadn’t spoken up, and he didn’t feel it was his place to say it.
Seeing Wang Laozhu not saying anything, Sun Daming grew desperate and, gritting his teeth, said, "I beg you, Father and Mother, if not for the sake of my relationship with Yongzhen, then for the sake of Shitou, his wife, and the child in her belly. Today, on their first visit, they encounter such a situation, how can they face others in the future? Won’t they be talked about behind their backs?"
As he spoke, he called out, "Yongzhen! Come here and plead with your father, or do you really want to sever ties over such a trifle? If we actually cut ties, we’ll become a laughingstock! Our family’s Mutou hasn’t even taken a wife yet; with this kind of reputation, which family would want to marry their daughter to our family?"
Wang Yongzhu, upon hearing Sun Daming’s call and mention of her youngest son Mutou, forced herself to gather her strength and walked over, kneeling beside Sun Daming.
Seeing their parents kneeling, Sun Shitou and Shitou’s Wife also hurriedly knelt down behind them.
The Sun family members all knelt down, while Wang Laozhu was the only one from the Wang family who didn’t step aside.
Wang Yongzhen, kneeling below, looked up pleadingly at Wang Laozhu, "Dad——"
Wang Laozhu sighed deeply. Today the Wang family’s face had been completely lost, but now it seemed alright. The Sun family had softened and knelt down to beg for mercy, saving some face for the Wang family at least.
If things had really gotten out of hand with the Sun family going all out today, the happy occasion of building a new house could have turned into a disaster, which would have been such a waste, wouldn’t it?
He didn’t ask for anything else, just hoping to smoothly complete the construction of the new house and be content.
Then, looking at his little girl and steeling himself, he said, "Alright, alright. Since you all admit your mistakes and apologize, we, as the elders, can’t really hold it against you, can we? It’s getting late. Everyone rest, we’ll be eating soon!"
The Sun family members brightened up at the mention of eating, their eyes lighting up, and even Old Lady Sun stopped causing trouble. They all stood in the courtyard, their mouths watering as they watched the pots.
The onlookers outside, seeing no more excitement, also dispersed to go home and prepare their own meals.
Only then did the Wang Family Courtyard quiet down.
Old Granny Zhang snorted coldly in the kitchen. No matter what, the Wang family hadn’t suffered a loss today. They had beaten that woman and forced the Sun family to kneel and beg for forgiveness, finally venting some of the anger in their hearts.
Wang Yongzhu truly hadn’t expected the Sun family to be so flexible in admitting their wrongs and actually kneeling down.
Had they continued to pressure the Sun family to leave, it would have been the Wang family being unreasonably uncompromising. The Wang family had gained both respect and face today, so this was enough; they didn’t lose out this round.
Ignoring the Sun family members, she began to delegate tasks, "We won’t eat at home today. The food will be sent to the new house and the pit area. Later, after counting headcount, the steamed buns should be divided and delivered separately. It’s cold in the fields today, so add a jar of wine to warm them up. Don’t let them catch a chill."
As soon as Sun Laoer and Sun Daming heard there was wine, their cravings almost shot out of their throats.
The Sun family watched with eagerness as two big pots of dishes were served and secured in large bowls with lids.
Steaming hot buns were taken out of the steamer, placed in the basket lined with a clean cloth, and piled high.
Some nimble-handed women had already portioned out the bowls and chopsticks into the baskets, ready to carry the food outside.
Wang Yongzhu brought out the leftover wine from the inner room and handed it to Wang Yonggui, "Third Brother, can you deliver it for me?"
Wang Yonggui also enjoyed a drink or two. Seeing the wine, he couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear, "Sure thing! Leave it to Third Brother!" And off he went, embracing the wine jar.
The Sun brothers now had eyes only for the wine, forgetting all about their mother, their children, everything.
They followed Wang Yonggui out of the Wang Family Courtyard, and Sun Shitou looked around the yard before also heading out.
Now, in the Wang Family Courtyard, only the Wang family, two women who had come to help, and three generations of the Sun family women were left.
The helping women, having finished preparing the men’s food, brought over the reserved dishes to the table and also brought over a basket of steamed buns. Before they could say anything, Old Lady Sun and Sun Shitou’s Wife had already rushed to the table edge.
