Chapter 515: Chapter 513 Sun Family
Old Granny Zhang’s legs started shaking, and she almost fell, but Wang Yongzhu, quick on her feet, caught Old Granny Zhang just in time.
Before she even had a chance to ask if everything was okay, Old Granny Zhang, hands on her hips, hissed at the doorway, "What shameless in-law are you? I don’t have an in-law as thick-skinned and black-hearted as you! Do you want me dead? I bet you wish I were dead, don’t you?"
Such an explosive temper?
Wang Yongzhu, completely bewildered, looked toward the doorway and saw, standing beside Wang Laozhu, a familiar figure. Wasn’t that Wang Yongzhen?
Two steps in front of Wang Yongzhen stood another old lady, dressed in patched clothing, with a long face, eyebrows like the number eight, eyes that slanted upwards at the ends, deep lines on both sides of her nose, and thin lips which gave her an appearance of petty bitterness.
Behind that old lady followed Sun Daming, whom she’d met once before, along with another man who bore a passing resemblance to Sun Daming. The man’s eyes roved curiously into the Wang Family Courtyard.
A young couple trailed them, the man initially reluctant, but as he saw the bustling scene inside the courtyard, his expression slowly changed, revealing a hint of greed.
The young wife looked around, then whispered earnestly to the young man.
Looking up and seeing Wang Yongzhu next to Old Granny Zhang, especially noting Wang Yongzhu’s attire, the young wife’s eyes lit up, her gaze fixed on the pair of silver bracelets Wang Yongzhu was wearing.
Wang Yongzhen’s face flushed with embarrassment as she softly called out, "Mother, sister—"
Then she turned to the young couple and said, "Shitou, Yuzhen, this is your grandmother and your little aunt—"
The people in the courtyard, seeing this, quickly understood that this must be Wang Yongzhen’s mother-in-law, as well as Wang Yongzhen’s son and daughter-in-law.
The other man, bearing a resemblance to Sun Daming and around the same age, was probably Sun Daming’s brother.
Why had they all come?
Wang Yongzhu blinked, starting to understand.
Old Granny Zhang was no fool; although she didn’t yet grasp why Wang Yongzhen had brought her in-laws, including her mother-in-law, little uncle-in-law, son, and daughter-in-law back to her parents’ house, that didn’t stop her from being wary, "The eldest daughter has returned! Really, you should’ve sent a message before coming. Everything here is in disarray, we’re not prepared at all. People will say we’re neglecting you if they find out. Moreover, it’s fine for you to come back, but why bring your mother-in-law and your little uncle-in-law? What’s the meaning of this?"
There’s never been a tradition of daughters returning to their parents’ home with their mother-in-law and little uncle-in-law. What is the Sun Family thinking?
Wang Laozhu, seeing his eldest daughter return, especially with his grand-son-in-law and grand-daughter-in-law making their first visit, felt an indescribable joy.
Although he didn’t understand why his daughter had brought her mother-in-law and little uncle-in-law along, out of respect for his grand-son-in-law and grand-daughter-in-law, he couldn’t voice his concerns.
Family, if you don’t give face to your own daughter, who will?
But, upon hearing his wife’s words, he also felt that something was inappropriate, and he immediately asked in a low voice, "Eldest Daughter, why have you come here?"
Wang Yongzhen opened her mouth to speak, but before she could say anything, her mother-in-law burst out laughing with a chuckle, both shrill and abrupt, taking over the conversation, "Look at what you’re saying! Such a big event as your family building a new house, and you didn’t even mention a word to us? It was our second son who heard about it, and only then did I find out."
Old Granny Zhang spat out, "Pah! My Old Wang Family building a new house, what’s it got to do with your Sun Family? Why should we inform you? Who do you think you are? In all my years, I’ve never heard of such a rule! The Wang Family married a daughter to your Sun Family, but where do you get the face to reach so far into the Wang Family’s business?"
Old Lady Sun, unfazed and not blushing in the slightest, pretended she hadn’t heard, and explained with a cheerful smile, "Look at me, I misspoke and caused a misunderstanding! What I mean is, for such an important affair, you should at least have sent us a message. Our Sun Family might not have much, but we do have a few strong backs who could have lent a hand, couldn’t we?"
"That’s why, as soon as we got wind of it, we came right over without even having breakfast. Family, look, we haven’t even had a sip of water this early in the morning, are you really not going to let us in for a drink of water? I, as an Old Lady, could perhaps bear it, but Shitou is your Wang Family’s eldest grandson, and Yuzhen is the eldest grandson’s wife. Isn’t it a bit much to not even let them through the door on their first visit back to Granny and Grandpa’s house?" said Granny Sun, glancing at Old Granny Zhang while she spoke.
Old Granny Zhang honestly didn’t want to let the Sun Family in—what eldest grandson? Nonsense! What does he have to do with her? The children her own daughter will have in the future, those would be her true grandchildren!
But she couldn’t voice these thoughts. No matter her grievances against the Sun Family and no matter her opinions of Granny Sun, if she truly barred the eldest grandson and his wife from entering, Old Granny Zhang might as well not go out anymore, for she would be drowned in spit.
She had to grit her teeth and let them in.
But letting them in didn’t make her happy, and she didn’t keep her mouth shut either, "Enough with the nonsense! Our Wang Family certainly can’t afford to host such an exalted presence as the Sun Family. You talk so nicely now, but back when my Old Wang had a stroke and was lying in the clinic, how did your Sun Family speak? My poor eldest daughter, upon seeing her father, didn’t first inquire about how ill Old Wang was, but immediately scolded him for being bewitched by the ’Vixen Spirit’ that he had married later, accusing him of letting all our family’s assets be squandered by my second son."
"That would have been fine, I could understand my eldest daughter being distressed about her father and speaking rashly in her anger. But Granny Sun, what did you say then? You said that a daughter who is married off is like water spilled out, our eldest daughter was born a Sun, would die a Sun, and shouldn’t keep thinking about her parent’s home. Especially since the Wang Family was already ruined, and anything more would just be throwing good money after bad, a mess not to get involved in. You forbade our eldest daughter from contributing a single penny, or else she would be defying her mother-in-law and risk being sent back to her parent’s home!"
"So scared was our naive eldest daughter that she nearly lost her soul, being pulled away crying and wailing by your Sun Family! Have you forgotten all this?"
Old Granny Zhang’s words cut like a knife, stripping the Sun Family of their dignity.
The women helping in the courtyard exchanged glances when they heard this—they were puzzled why the eldest daughter and her in-laws hadn’t appeared for the construction of the big house. The roots of the issue were clear now.
Really, the Sun Family was too unkind. Regardless of the Wang Family’s hardships, outsiders could be ignored, but they were family after all. Wang’s eldest daughter had been with the Sun Family for so many years, had borne them a son, and even a daughter-in-law, and they couldn’t give her that bit of face?
A token contribution, some money or grain, as long as they made a show of support, would have been fine—no one would have said anything.
But for the Sun Family to be so heartless, to not contribute a penny and even force the Wang’s eldest daughter not to provide for her parent’s family, that was rarely seen.
As a result, those present looked down on the Sun Family with a bit of disdain.
