Chapter 453: Chapter 451: The Inverse Scale
Song Chongjin couldn’t control his own wild thoughts.
"I am much better today, and I can see clearly, but I still can’t look at the sun for too long, or I’ll feel dizzy and see darkness." Song Chongjin guessed in his heart, but he honestly replied.
Wang Yongzhu was somewhat reassured, and in her mind, she had Xiao Tiantian scan Song Chongjin to make sure that the toxins in his body were almost cleared. In the next few days, Song Chongjin’s eyesight would gradually recover. Given his physical condition, once he had fully absorbed the effects of the Mingmu Pills, his vision would surpass that of the past.
Wang Yongzhu didn’t beat around the bush, "Today I went to get even with your two masters, initially planning to just teach them a lesson and intimidate them, but your Master Qin unexpectedly acted like a cornered rat and attempted to harm my mother. I lost control for a moment and went too far, breaking Master Qin’s ankle and also administered a poison..."
She openly shared what she had done that day, without a hint of concealment.
Song Chongjin had heard from Wang Yonggui earlier about their actions at the Qin and Shopkeeper Zhang’s homes that day. However, most of what he said boasted of his own bravery and Wang Yongzhu’s dominance, and he didn’t mention Master Qin attacking Old Granny Zhang.
He had found it strange because in Wang Yonggui’s description, Wang Yongzhu’s behavior that day seemed off, a bit too arrogant.
Song Chongjin knew that Wang Yongzhu wasn’t like that. Although she possessed divine strength, she rarely used it to bully others, using it mostly for deterrence at critical moments.
Yet she seemed to show no mercy to either Master Qin or Shopkeeper Zhang, and he wondered why.
Upon hearing Wang Yongzhu’s words, he immediately understood.
For Wang Yongzhu now, Old Granny Zhang, her biological mother, was her Achilles’ heel. She could laugh off anything bad done to her, but if someone harmed Old Granny Zhang, the consequences would be even more severe than if they harmed her.
No wonder she showed no mercy to Hunter Qin and Shopkeeper Zhang.
Once he understood, Song Chongjin nodded, "I understand. If it were me, harming me wouldn’t matter much, but if someone harmed you, I would never let them off lightly..."
Wang Yongzhu’s remaining words got stuck in her throat. Why did he have to bring himself into it when she was telling him about injuring her masters?
However, she couldn’t deny that Song Chongjin’s attitude eased her tense nerves a bit.
Her demeanor softened, "Shopkeeper Zhang revealed a secret today..." She carefully repeated the truth that Shopkeeper Zhang had confessed.
Song Chongjin’s expression remained unchanged, and after a long pause, he said indifferently, "I had guessed seventy to eighty percent of it. There were several times I was chased and targeted, and the only ones who knew my whereabouts were them, so I began to suspect..."
Wang Yongzhu nodded, "As long as you are aware. Moreover, the way I treated Master Qin and Shopkeeper Zhang today was because I sensed several people among the crowd with a presence similar to Hunter Qin. I guess they might be spies monitoring Hunter Qin or you, possibly sent by that master. To eliminate future troubles and to instil fear in them, it was halfway for my mother and halfway a performance for them."
"These silver notes, property deeds, and paintings and such, I’ll hand them all over to you. You decide what to do, whether to return them to Shopkeeper Zhang or something else."
Upon hearing this news, Song Chongjin’s expression changed as he furrowed his brows.
After some thought, he packed away the silver note and the calligraphy, then said, "It looks like I have to go out for a few days. I will return these items to them. The house, the calligraphy, and the silver, I will earn them all for you in the future!"
Wang Yongzhu glanced at him with annoyance. "That’s perfect. I’ve told everyone that your eyes were blinded by poison. Tomorrow I’ll say that I’m sending you into the mountains to seek that Divine Doctor to cure your eyes, and, by the way, to take me to see that cave you mentioned last time. I need to use it now."
After the two had discussed and made decisions, Wang Yongzhu stood up, walked to the door, and, seemingly in jest but actually quite serious, said, "You’re lucky this time, I just happened to have an antidote pill, so your eyes are fine, and you won’t have to suffer for ten years. Next time you might not be so lucky, and I don’t want there to be a next time or else—"
She paused before adding, "The position of a son-in-law who married into the Wang Family, I believe there are plenty of others who would be willing to take it!"
Having said that, Wang Yongzhu left without looking at Song Chongjin’s expression.
Song Chongjin ruefully rubbed his face, knowing that ingesting poison wasn’t something that could easily be shrugged off. There was no use in explaining now; his actions had been reckless, and there was nothing to argue about.
From now on, he absolutely wouldn’t make the same mistake again. The position of a son-in-law married into the Wang Family was his, and no one else would even think about it!
After Wang Yongzhu left the room, Old Granny Zhang was berating her son and daughter-in-law, leaving them disheveled and dejected. Now they hung their heads low as they came out of the main house.
Seeing Wang Yongzhu, Wang Yongfu felt awkward and forced a smile, asking, "How are Brother Song’s eyes?" as a way to start a conversation.
Wang Yongzhu nodded, "He still can’t see clearly. Early tomorrow morning, I’ll take him into the mountains to find that remarkable person who gave Brother some medicine last time, to see if he has a way. After all, he lives deep in the mountains and might have some folk remedies that could help Brother Song get better."
"That’s the right thing to do. Eyes and health are the most important and should not be neglected," Wang Yongfu said, nodding repeatedly.
"Are you taking Brother Song into the mountains alone tomorrow? Maybe I should have Jindou and Jinhoo accompany you as well, just in case you need an extra hand," Wang Yongfu said after some thought. Although his sister was strong, Song Chongjin’s eyes were currently impaired.
There were too many fierce animals in Dahei Mountain, and if something were to happen, he was afraid his sister might not be able to handle it alone.
Wang Yonggui laughed first, "Big brother, that’s kindly meant but more likely to cause trouble. There are dangers everywhere in Dahei Mountain. If my sister takes Song Chongjin alone, she can still protect him. If Jindou and Jinhoo were with them, how many arms does she have? We wouldn’t want her to be held back by them in the end."
Lady Lin felt indignant and was about to say something, but she was glared at by Wang Yongfu and reluctantly lowered her head again.
"Laosan’s right. Then should we bring something for that remarkable person? It wouldn’t be right to go empty-handed," Wang Yongfu said, scratching his head.
"No need, the mountain goods from our home may not even compare to what that person has. When the time comes, we’ll see what the remarkable person says. I’ll go back to my room and pack," Wang Yongzhu said, ignoring the silent arguments between Wang Yongfu and his wife, and went straight back inside.
She had already told Old Granny Zhang that even if Lady Lin had truly returned, it would be all well and good if she could completely reform her ways after so many years.
But with her greed and penchant for taking advantage, along with a personality she couldn’t hide, it was certain that she’d not end well in the long run. Now, between her and Wang Yongfu, the harmony of the past was gone.
