Chapter 417: Chapter 417 A Chill Down My Spine
The wolf exchanged a glance with Song Chongjin and Wang Yongzhu, then let out a long howl towards the sky. From the jungle, behind the trees, the wolves all revealed their heads, readying themselves for attack.
"Not good, the pack is going to attack!" Uncle Huzi shouted loudly, alerting the hunters to prepare.
He waved at Song Chongjin and Wang Yongzhu, "Come quick, get inside."
He motioned for the three to stand in the circle formed by the hunters with their backs together.
Wang Yongping looked at Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin.
He was pushed by Wang Yongzhu, "You go in first, just look after yourself."
Wang Yongping involuntarily stumbled into the group of hunters, and with a pull from Uncle Huzi, he was ushered into the circle.
Meanwhile, Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin one gripped a dagger tightly, the other’s bow already notched with an arrow, both poised and ready to strike.
"You two, why are you still running outside? Don’t you want to live?" A frantic hunter, seeing Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin not only not heading towards the crowd but moving outward, suddenly became anxious.
Uncle Huzi also frowned deeply, "Who do these children belong to? What time is it, and yet they are so reckless?" While complaining, his feet did not hesitate, moving forward to drag the two back.
After all, it was a matter of human life.
Before he could take two steps, he saw the arrow in Song Chongjin’s hand shooting out, striking a wolf between the eyes. The wolf let out a whimper and collapsed to the ground.
This arrow, much like a signal for attack, set the entire wolf pack in motion.
And most of them were heading straight for Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin, with only a small part pouncing towards the hunters.
The hunters were in disarray, their arrows shooting wildly.
It was not easy to repel this wave of the wolves’ onslaught, and upon a careful look, everyone was dumbfounded.
In front of Song Chongjin and Wang Yongzhu, there were already more than ten wolf carcasses piled up.
Some were killed by arrows, others had their bellies or throats sliced open with a blade, lying on the ground in a pool of blood, the heavy scent of blood nauseating.
Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin were also splattered with quite a bit of wolf blood.
Song Chongjin’s arrows were spent, and he had long since tossed his bow aside. In his hand was the Waist Knife he never parted with, its cold gleam indicative it was no ordinary weapon.
With their backs against each other, they supported one another, surrounded by about twenty or thirty wolves, now reduced by half.
The remaining wolves circled just around the two of them, not daring to pounce again.
It took Uncle Huzi a while to recover his senses and grab Liu Xiaoqiao, "Liu... Xiao Qiao, where did your guest come from? Is he some sort of killing god?"
Wasn’t he? That man need not be mentioned, obviously, a skilled hunter, but that young lady, looking so delicate and genteel, slaughtered the wolves so efficiently and swiftly, like slicing through tofu, rendering onlookers speechless.
Whose daughter was this? So fierce?
Liu Xiaoqiao was also stunned, although she knew Wang Yongzhu was strong, the ease with which she killed the wolves, making it look as simple as killing fish, completely outshone all the hunters in Chongzi Gou, right?
She used to think Wang Yongzhu might be a drag on them, but now she felt ashamed at the thought!
What drag? She was clearly a savior!
Unable to help herself, she looked towards Wang Yongping, who was both excited and nervous, "That, er, Fourth Brother Wang, has Yongzhu always been... this formidable?"
Wang Yongping came to his senses and nodded repeatedly, "Absolutely! My sister, just a few days ago, killed more than ten wolves, this business of killing wolves is too easy for her..."
At this moment, the wolves’ primary targets were Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin—the hunters here faced less pressure—as everyone perked up their ears to listen to Wang Yongping boast about his sister’s great achievements.
Under normal circumstances, no one would believe him, thinking Wang Yongping was just bragging.
But at this moment, the bodies of the wolves Wang Yongzhu had killed were still warm, and hearing Wang Yongping’s words, they all suddenly gained a solemn respect.
Who would have thought that such formidable girls could be found beyond the mountains!
There were young hunters whose eyes shone brightly at Wang Yongzhu, marveling that not only was this girl from beyond the mountains delicate and pretty, but she was also skilled.
To marry such a woman would be a dream come true!
Just as they began to daydream, they heard Wang Yongping say gleefully, "My sister is formidable, and my brother-in-law is too. With the two of them here, I reckon this wolf pack will soon be dealt with..."
The hearts of the young hunters present instantly shattered.
Turning their heads to look at Song Chongjin and then at themselves, each gave up that notion.
On the other side, Song Chongjin and Wang Yongzhu weren’t having such an easy time either. Killing more than ten wolves took a great toll on their physical and mental strength.
Wang Yongzhu had been practicing the Physical Enhancement Technique daily, and her reaction ability had greatly improved, making her movements sharper than before.
Last time, she relied on sheer brute strength to kill the wolves, but now, she had started to use some techniques and clever force.
Often, before her mind had even reacted, her body reflexively moved on its own, dissolving the wolves’ sneak attacks at the most appropriate angles and even managing to counter-attack.
Even though Song Chongjin was back-to-back with Wang Yongzhu, he was constantly watchful, afraid that a moment’s negligence would get Yongzhu injured.
But everything that happened surprised him. Having witnessed Yongzhu kill wolves last time, the Wang Yongzhu of today had a certain indescribable rhythm and sense in her every move.
It didn’t seem like martial arts, but more like an instinctive reaction, knowing when was the best time to strike and where was the most vulnerable spot for a lethal blow.
Terrifyingly precise!
However, at the moment, Song Chongjin had no energy to spare for such thoughts. Looking at the dozen or so wolves still surrounding them and the leader wolf standing on the rocks, staring in their direction, ready to threaten their lives at any moment.
Taking advantage of the fact that the wolves were only circling and had not yet attacked, Song Chongjin whispered to Wang Yongzhu, "We can’t go on like this, let’s make it quick! The longer we drag this out, the worse it is for us."
Wang Yongzhu nodded, about to speak, when the sky had already darkened, and the hunters had lit their torches, illuminating the surroundings brightly.
Seeing the firelight, the wolves backed off a bit. In the dark, out of the reach of the firelight, pairs of green eyes glowed eerily, sending chills down one’s spine.
Human and wolf thus came to a standoff.
Just then, on the hillside, firelight flickered closer and closer, and voices carried over.
The remaining hunters from Chongzi Gou had arrived.
The hunters immediately cheered up, "We’re over here, we’re here!"
The wolves grew restless.
The leader wolf also became unsettled, pacing back and forth on the rocks, glancing at the line of torches up on the hillside and then back at Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin.
Wang Yongzhu knew that the leader wolf was beginning to hesitate.
After a moment’s thought, Wang Yongzhu called out to the leader wolf, "We might as well be old acquaintances. You see, more people have come to our side, but your troops are dwindling. It’s not easy for you to become the leader wolf, and if your followers are slaughtered by us, I imagine you won’t be able to be the leader anymore! How about we both take a step back, you lead your pack away and we’ll stop attacking, how does that sound?"
