Chapter 407: Chapter 407 Relax

After arriving in town, Song Chongjin headed straight for the bookstore, the very one to which his supposed biological father had sent people.

The shopkeeper of the bookstore was responsible for teaching Song Chongjin to read, and in the backyard, there was a dedicated martial arts master in charge of teaching Song Chongjin self-defense skills.

Both were only responsible for instructing Song Chongjin and did not involve themselves with anything else.

Upon seeing Song Chongjin’s visit this time, neither of them was surprised. However, the shopkeeper who taught reading asked an additional question, wondering if marrying a village girl might be something Song Chongjin would regret in the future.

Song Chongjin had long grown tired of the so-called masters who were in reality his surveillance agents.

Upon hearing this, he simply replied that he himself was truly a country boy, and there could be no better match than a village girl for him. Besides, he had heard from the two masters before that his father was a Noble Patron and therefore he needed to learn to read and such. Now, the truth of his heritage had been revealed.

His mother had confessed in person that he was not her biological son. Her real son, the son of the Noble Patron, had died, and he was merely a foundling.

Since he was no longer the son of a Noble Patron, it was only right that he should no longer accept the Noble Patron’s benefaction. Over the years, he had received favors from the Noble Patron, and because of these favors, he had faced several attempts on his life.

From now on, everyone should mind their own business. He asked the two masters to report back to the Noble Patron and to that female Noble Patron who was so determined to see him dead. They could rest assured, for he would be nothing more than a villager from now on, with no further involvement with the Noble Patron.

After Song Chongjin spoke, he bowed to them and then turned around and walked out.

He felt a sudden sense of relief throughout his body.

No matter what, no matter what his origins were, at least the shackles on him were now gone.

Upon hearing this, Wang Yongzhu nodded thoughtfully. Although she felt that something wasn’t quite right, now that it was all out in the open, there probably wouldn’t be any trouble in the future.

"It’s good that we’ve talked this through. We should still be careful for a while, just in case the Noble Patron becomes enraged with shame. We’ll see what happens then," she said.

Song Chongjin nodded, then took a small box out of his bosom and handed it to Wang Yongzhu.

Wang Yongzhu looked at Song Chongjin skeptically, took the box, and opened it. Inside were a pair of small pearl earrings, plain and clean. Although they weren’t very conspicuous, they caught Wang Yongzhu’s eye.

She smiled at Song Chongjin, took the earrings, and put them on her ears. After admiring herself from various angles, she asked, "Do they look good?"

"Beautiful!" replied Song Chongjin, nodding hastily. He only regretted not having put them on Yongzhu himself.

When the pair returned from the backyard after picking vegetables, everyone looked at them with teasing eyes.

Especially Old Granny Zhang, who smiled from ear to ear at the sight of the earrings on her daughter’s ears. They hadn’t been there before, but now they were, obviously bought by her son-in-law in town.

She never would have guessed that the usually frosty Song Chongjin, after getting engaged, turned out to be so caring.

Seeing everyone smilingly looking at the couple, Old Granny Zhang, worried they might be embarrassed by their shyness, gestured to everyone to tone it down.

However, neither Wang Yongzhu nor Song Chongjin was the sensitive type, and this little commotion was really nothing to them.

It was Lady Lin and Lady Jiang who looked at Wang Yongzhu with envy. On her engagement, she had received a golden hairpin with a large pearl, which was already enviable enough.

Now, only the second day after a trip to town, another pair of earrings had been brought back.

Looking at her man and then at her own, Lady Lin now found herself making amends for her past deeds, but she remembered that during the best times with Wang Yongfu, it was nothing more than sneaking a bit of extra food to her.

As for Lady Jiang, Wang Yonggui had been charming before they married, sending flowers, fabric, and even a few decorative hairpins in secret.

Who could have known he would turn out the way he did?

At this thought, Lady Jiang sighed, retracting her thoughts and deciding not to dwell on it any longer. She would just keep her head down and work honestly!

She simply wasn’t destined for that kind of life!
