Chapter 310: What’s the Point in Fighting Anymore?
Chapter 310: Chapter 310: What’s the Point in Fighting Anymore?
Wang Yongzhu didn’t have time for him and, after pulling apart the pile of stones, she immediately rushed to the tree trunk above. This time, she didn’t use her hands, but instead her feet, stomping hard on the trunk a few times before giving a strong kick. With the momentum, she leapt onto the trunk on this side.
After trembling for a while, the half trunk water dam broke in the middle and was quickly swept away by the rushing water.
Not only Song Chongjin noticed the commotion, but also the people from Jinquan Bay and Qilidun.
Everyone simultaneously stopped their fighting and stared in disbelief at Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin standing on the edge.
By now, the water that had been building up for too long had finally found an outlet. The current became fierce, and the half-trunk water dam under Wang Yongzhu and Song Chongjin’s feet also started to sway.
Wang Yongzhu lost her balance, her body wobbled, and she toppled into the river.
Damn! Why is it that when other people lose their balance they fall into the arms of a handsome guy and, if lucky, even get a kiss, but when it comes to me, I fall into the river? Is this to inadvertently ruin my looks?
"Little sister—"
Wang Yongping only had time to shout.
Then he saw Song Chongjin step forward, reach out to grab Wang Yongzhu, and pull her into his arms before quickly leaping onto a large rock on the riverbank.
Wang Yongzhu, having narrowly escaped disaster, patted her chest. She casually pushed away Song Chongjin’s arm, her expression very calm and collected, without a hint of a girl’s shyness and embarrassment from being held in a man’s embrace in front of everyone.
Instead, she stepped forward and, from her elevated position on the rock, looked disdainfully down at the petrified crowd below, "The dam has been torn down, what are you still fighting for?"
The villagers, who had just nearly come to blows, paused, glanced at the flowing river, looked up at Wang Yongzhu standing high above them, and then at each other.
One of the villagers from Jinquan Bay spat, threw his hoe to the ground, and sat down with a thud, "The dam’s torn down, the water’s flowing. What the hell are we still fighting for?"
This statement had everyone looking at each other for a while before they began to drop their farm tools and start groaning in pain.
"Hey, Second Bro, take a look at my back, I think I twisted it just now."
"Ow, these bastards, my arm—"
"My foot, my foot, Laosan you idiot, where did you put your hoe?"
...
The rising and falling cries of pain and cursing effectively dissipated the previously tense atmosphere.
The leaders from Jinquan Bay, Jin Laosan, and the son of Qilidun’s Lizheng looked at each other and tacitly put down their farm tools.
In reality, since the two villages faced each other regularly, everyone knew each other. If not for the fight over water, there really were no grudges.
With the water now unstoppable, Jin Laosan wasn’t about to waste any more effort. He stepped forward, winked at the Lizheng’s son, "Li Hutou, that little, little girl, whose family is she from? She looks thin and small, but how is she so fierce?"
Li Hutou snorted, "Whose family? You know the Wang Family girl who’s been the talk of the town for receiving a gift from the palace recently? It’s her!"
Jin Laosan clicked his tongue and took a sharp intake of breath, "Really?"
Li Hutou sneered, "Believe it or not!"
Though Jin Laosan looked rough, he was actually quite astute. Hearing this, he sensed trouble, especially remembering what someone had said at the beginning of it all.
Jin Laosan’s face changed, "Where’s Jin Mazhizi? Who’s seen Jin Mazhizi?"
People from Jinquan Bay looked around and, eventually, behind a rock, they found Jin Mazhizi passed out.
Someone also carried the man who had ambushed Wang Yongzhu earlier and had been knocked out by Song Chongjin over to their own side.
Jin Laosan hurried over and first checked the breathing of the two men with pockmarked faces; they were still alive, which allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief.
Turning his head, he asked, "Who injured him?" His gaze shifted between Wang Yongping and Song Chongjin.
"I did it! What of it? If he keeps spouting such filth, watch me cripple him!" Wang Yongping stepped forward.
His reputation for fighting viciously was well-known in several villages, especially after what the man with the pockmarked faces had said; everyone had heard it.
Any man with a sense of honor, hearing his own sister insulted in that manner, would consider not killing the offender an act of great restraint.
Jin Laosan stamped his foot and, through gritted teeth, met the smirking eyes of Wang Yongzhu on the stone and the cold gaze of Song Chongjin, his pupils shrinking for a moment, "Today, we’re just unlucky, let’s go!"
With that, he gestured for his men to carry the two men and leave. Some were reluctant to go, feeling it a loss of face, but after Jin Laosan kicked them a couple of times, they obediently left.
Once the people from Jinquan Bay had departed, the crowd from Qilidun finally relaxed, looking at Wang Yongzhu as if he were a deity.
Those who had previously disdained Wang Yongzhu now felt as though they had been slapped in the face.
If it hadn’t been for Wang Yongzhu today, even with dozens of them present, it would have all been for nothing.
Li Hutou wanted to say something, but Song Chongjin coldly said from atop the stone, "The water has been released; if you’re not going back to fight for it, what are you doing sticking around here?"
That reminded everyone that there was now water in the village, and they needed to return to store water for their own fields.
The quicker ones took off running for home.
Li Hutou, at least, remembered he had led the group, and he hesitated, "And this place?"
"Yongzhu and I will stay here to keep watch, the rest of you go back," replied Song Chongjin, composed.
Everyone was worried about their own fields, and upon hearing Song Chongjin say this, they didn’t think much further, nodded, dropped a few torches, "Alright then, you’re taking on quite the burden!"
Saying that, they ran towards Qilidun. At this moment, fighting for water was like fighting for their lives.
Wang Yongping, however, hesitated a bit. Out here in the wilderness, alone with a woman, he really didn’t want to overthink things, but he couldn’t ignore that his sister had just been held by Song Chongjin in front of everyone.
"How about I stay as well?" Wang Yongping thought it over; going back alone, his mother might just scold him to death?
"Fourth Brother, you go back first. The family doesn’t have anyone else to rely on right now, you know how Dad is. Jindou and the others have never dealt with anything serious, and I’m worried something might happen. It won’t do if there’s no man in the house to handle affairs. Tell Mom, say it was me who asked you to go back, she won’t blame you," Wang Yongzhu knew Song Chongjin wanted to talk to her alone and nodded decisively.
Wang Yongping thought the same, as their year’s food supply depended on the fields; it couldn’t be delayed. Gritting his teeth and giving Wang Yongzhu a few more warnings, he dashed home.
After Wang Yongping’s figure disappeared, Wang Yongzhu finally sat down with a thump. She had exerted so much strength earlier that her arms felt weak and needed a massage, or else she might not even be able to lift them tomorrow.
Although her body had been transformed, such a sudden burst of strength was still unbearable.
Just as she started massaging herself, Song Chongjin’s hands landed on hers, silently massaging her arm with the perfect amount of pressure.
Wang Yongzhu, feeling drowsy from the massage, vaguely heard Song Chongjin mumble a question, "Yongzhu, why don’t you ask me to come through your door—"
Wang Yongzhu’s mind twitched, and she replied offhandedly, "Sure, kneel down and call me Daddy then—"
