Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Saying You’re Cheap, I’ll Lend You!
Qin Yan subconsciously turned her head back and scurried to Bo Yunshen’s side. The man had just lit a cigarette, the tip sparking like stars amidst the dense fog, casting his handsome face in an even more unapproachable light.
Qin Yan’s pace halted, her voice low as she spoke, "Mr. Bo, could you lend me some money? I’ll definitely return it to you tomorrow."
There was no wind around, and although her voice was not loud, it was crystal clear. Yet, Bo Yunshen looked at Qin Yan with a lack of interest, exhaling the smoke from his mouth, the tobacco scent wafting away with the rising tendrils.
The man’s tone was slow, tinged with a hint of defiance, "What did you say? I didn’t quite catch that."
Bo Yunshen had always held a grudge against her for driving Lin Man away, and even to this day, he would surely find ways to humiliate her.
Qin Yan’s eyes carried a hint of bewilderment, mixed with despair.
She hung her head, biting the tip of her tongue.
The little self-respect she had tried to maintain in front of Bo Yunshen had evaporated in that moment.
"Mr. Bo, could you please lend me some money? I will return it immediately when I get back to the company tomorrow."
Qin Yan’s tone rose slightly as she looked directly at Bo Yunshen, the fragments in her eyes shattering into glimmers of light, fading within her gaze.
Bo Yunshen’s heart skipped a beat, his pupils constricting.
This was Qin Yan, who always held her head high even when her reputation was in tatters, never bowing down to anyone, even threatening his mother and marrying into the high-status Bo Family.
Now, for a few hundred dollars, she was begging him in a lowly manner.
In order to achieve her goals, she had always been unscrupulous.
Three years ago, what Qin Yan sought was to marry into a wealthy family; three years later, what she sought was a mere few banknotes she would normally not even glance at.
The nature remained the same, the only change was her attitude; three years ago, it was a threat, three years later, it was a plea.
Bo Yunshen felt an even stronger sense of disgust rising within him. She wants money, huh?
He’d give it to her!
Bo Yunshen held a cigarette between his lips and, with both hands free, patted his pockets up and down before finally pulling out a wallet from the inside pocket of his suit.
Seeing this, Qin Yan pursed her lips and involuntarily took a step forward.
The man did not hesitate either, pulling out a stack of bright red banknotes from the wallet. He didn’t bother counting them, extended them towards Qin Yan. With a slight flick of his wrist in the air, the notes rustled, emitting a faint, barely perceptible sound in the stillness of the night.
Qin Yan’s eyes brightened, and she instinctively reached out to take them.
Bo Yunshen raised his hand, avoiding Qin Yan’s gesture, which instantly chilled her heart.
His tone was light and dismissive, a chill rippling through the humid summer night because of his words, "Want it?"
Qin Yan licked her pale lips and nodded, saying, "I will pay it back."
How ironic; she and Bo Yunshen were a married couple with a certificate to prove it, and yet, for a few notes of currency, she had resorted to using the word "pay back" three times.
But Bo Yunshen’s laugh was even more sardonic. He pinched the money and shook it again in front of Qin Yan’s face, his expression laced with mockery, "I’m not short of this little bit of money. Director Qin, call yourself cheap, and I’ll lend it to you!"
Qin Yan’s mind roared, watching Bo Yunshen’s thin lips opening and closing, her heart felt as though it was being squeezed by a giant fist, the pain nearly making her cry out.
She looked at Bo Yunshen’s face, feeling increasingly estranged, unable to merge him with the youth who held her and made promises eleven years ago.
Tears welled up in Qin Yan’s eyes as she stared tightly at Bo Yunshen, her heart feeling like it had been torn into hundreds of pieces.
A few strands of displeasure tainted Bo Yunshen’s brows. Qin Yan loved that bastard so much, didn’t she?
Wasn’t she willing to do anything for that bastard?
A fair trade—he only required her two words, and he could let Qin Yan walk away from him with so much money. She, Qin Yan, would make a killing without any risk!
Or perhaps, in her heart, even that kind of nebulous dignity couldn’t compare with the bastard?
Bo Yunshen sneered inwardly. He was asking her to state nothing but the truth, merely to admit something everyone in Tong City already knew, and then she could take the money to find the bastard.
For her, Qin Yan, was that so difficult?
Bo Yunshen’s thin lips parted, but before he could speak, Qin Yan suddenly looked in Bo Yunshen’s direction and said with a decisive tone, "Yes, I am cheap!"
The man’s pupils shrank sharply. It took less than three seconds from Bo Yunshen’s words to Qin Yan’s admission. She admitted it so quickly.
Just like she had said, she really was cheap enough!
What had he, Bo Yunshen, brought back as a wife?
No backbone, endless scheming, a multitude of tricks—besides her beauty, what else did this woman have?
Bo Yunshen let out a cold laugh and flung the banknotes against Qin Yan’s delicate, porcelain-like face.
There wasn’t a bit of wind in the air. As the banknotes fluttered, they made a soft rustling sound, twirling down from the air to the ground.
The last trace of color drained from Qin Yan’s face. The force from Bo Yunshen was strong, leaving a red mark from the fresh banknotes on her cheek. She bit her lip, not making a sound.
Even though Bo Yunshen was still standing before her, she slowly crouched down, head bowed, picking up the banknotes scattered on the ground one by one.
Uncontrollably, as she bowed her head, tears smashed onto the ground.
She knew, from that moment on, her soul had knelt before this former lover, never to raise its head again.
The space she had carved out in Bo Group, the pride and the scarce self-reliance she had maintained stubbornly for three years without asking Bo Yunshen, without asking the Bo Family, had been easily shattered by Bo Yunshen with a single word, a single action.
And now, she didn’t even have time to be sad.
After picking up the money, Qin Yan turned without hesitation and walked toward the taxi driver.
Only Qin Yan and Bo Yunshen were by the hospital entrance; the taxi driver had been watching ever since they had started to move. Seeing Qin Yan approaching, he rolled down the window and whistled at her.
The driver’s gaze brightened upon seeing Qin Yan’s beauty. His lustful eyes roamed all over her, and as she approached, he joked with a smile, "Miss, had a fight with your boyfriend? Such a boyfriend might as well be dumped. You’re so pretty; countless men are waiting to hop into bed with you!"
Qin Yan’s steps halted abruptly, and she raised her head to look at the taxi driver. He was very ugly, greasy folds of fat piled across his face, and in his beady eyes, a sleazy light gleamed.
She had reached the taxi, the window slid down, and a few strands of a faint sour odor wafted from the man.
Suppressing her nausea, Qin Yan looked around.
There weren’t many buildings around, other than the hospital, which still emitted sporadic lights, everything else was pitch-dark.
There were a few trees planted at the hospital entrance. Their shadows sprawled across the ground, layered and overlapping, as if ghosts might emerge from the crevices any second.
