Chapter 520: Chapter 518: The Earth Fissure
"No thanks, I’ll go down and keep an eye on the door, might even score some snacks after work," Jianxiong licked his lips, looking very hungry.
Su Mo just went along with him.
Following Lu Chen to the mission hall, the place was bustling with noise. Today’s new missions were listed on a large board placed by the entrance.
Among them, the hotel cleaning project was particularly conspicuous.
However, Su Mo did not focus on that. Instead, she noticed the chicken coop task below it and exclaimed in surprise, "Is there still a well-preserved chicken coop around?"
"Interested in checking it out?" Lu Chen was also curious.
"Let’s go! We can catch some and have Rong Bai set up a pen for them. Then we’ll have eggs in the future!"
In Su Mo’s eyes, this was much better than cleaning a hotel.
"But why do we need a team of 30 people? Is this chicken coop hard to attack?" Su Mo asked, noticing that the number on the tail end had just been changed from 25 to 30 with chalk.
"Let’s ask at the counter," Lu Chen said, leading her to queue up.
In the hall, there were many glances cast at the two of them, mostly amiable. Su Mo’s restaurant was extremely famous by now, everyone knew it. On the commercial street, Momo Restaurant, frequented by high-level superpower users despite its steep prices, could not resist the daily crowds.
Still, there were some complaints—too expensive, daring only for one visit.
"Miss Su, this chicken coop was discovered two days ago at the foot of a mountain on P city’s boundary. Recently, the frequency of Mutant Beasts in that area has increased, hence the increased number of people," the woman sitting behind the desk replied respectfully.
"So you’re saying people are signing up not just for the chickens, but also for those extra Mutant Beasts?"
"Yes, because it’s close by, we can leave as soon as the vehicle is full. There will be soldiers leading the way, and we only take 10 percent of the total goods collected."
"We’ll take it," Su Mo generously signed her and Lu Chen’s names in the notebook. Immediately, a soldier came over and led them towards the refugee camp’s gate.
They traveled in a vehicle provided by the refugee camp, which charged very little compensation. Su Mo couldn’t help but admit, Rong Bai did a great job in winning people’s hearts, especially now, since fuel was a precious commodity.
At the entrance, quite a few people had gathered. Seeing those familiar figures gave Su Mo a bit of a headache, "When you’re unlucky, troubles find you every day."
Lin Yao, Mo Yan. What a coincidence.
The two groups had ended up taking the same mission as her. What kind of special fate was this?
Seeing Su Mo, both groups obviously had not expected her presence, revealing different expressions.
One was bitterness and resentment, and the other was guilt and reluctance. No matter how you looked at it, Su Mo just wanted to roll her eyes.
She tried to keep smiling, walking side by side with Lu Chen to the front of the two teams, listening as the soldier explained, "It’s a 30-person team. Since it’s already noon, in order to make a quick trip, we’re setting off now."
P city is safe now, but at night, everyone needs to be cautious.
Since there were only two of them, the soldiers arranged them in the less populous group with Mo Yan, in a large vehicle.
All the way, that nakedly admiring gaze from Mo Yan never left Su Mo’s face.
It was the kind of military vehicle where you sit facing each other and dozens can fit in the back. Su Mo was thoroughly annoyed by such glances, and Lu Chen also appeared somewhat brooding, his ominous eyes fixed on Mo Yan with a hint of murderous intent.
The pressure of a Level 6 superpower user made Mo Yan instinctively avert his gaze, feeling his heart nearly jump out of his chest.
Cold sweat dripped from his forehead.
Erin couldn’t help but whisper in his ear, "Don’t forget, you are now an enemy to them."
Mo Yan bowed his head, his fists clenched tightly on his knees, and in the place where Lu Chen couldn’t see, there was a deep unwillingness.
In another car, Lin Yao was quietly discussing with Fatty, "Any way to distract Lu Chen? Sending out five superpower users to deal with a Level 5 superpower user should be no problem, right?"
"You want her life? Impossible, don’t forget about Lu Chen and Rong Bai, whether we can even survive the return trip is questionable," Fatty immediately rejected the proposal. He wasn’t completely foolish; he knew very well how many powerful individuals had come on the opening day, he could indulge Lin Yao, but he certainly couldn’t afford to get himself killed.
Lin Yao was angry, yet she felt utterly drained.
The vehicles traveled for about two hours before they suddenly began to shake violently.
With a sharp brake, the vehicle came to a halt.
A hand constrained Su Mo’s waist, locking her firmly to the seat, preventing her from lurching forward; she leaned on Lu Chen’s legs, looking outside in surprise, "What just happened?"
The superpower user with spiritual power in the vehicle was the first to respond, "I didn’t detect any problems."
"Let’s go and see," said the soldier.
Everyone got out of the car, and by then, they were not far from the chicken coop, with a small hill just a few hundred meters away from them.
As Su Mo stepped on the ground, she looked down, her eyes filled with shock. Beneath her feet was an extremely thick crack that sliced toward the mountain, stretching as far as the eye could see.
"The ground... has cracked!?"
There were frequent gasps around.
This situation was too astonishing.
Lu Chen frowned and said coldly, "P city is not on an earthquake belt; this city has never encountered such an event before."
As earthquakes of all sizes in the country could make the news, Lu Chen derived this conclusion based on some geographical data and his memory.
"What’s going on here?! This crack is way too big," Su Mo squatted down, noticing the width of the crack was wider than her palm.
"Without advanced equipment and experts, it’s hard to know the answer," Lu Chen said as he pulled her to stand up, his gaze ominously serious, "Maybe it’s an abnormal crustal movement."
Su Mo expressed her fear, "The refugee camp! There must be trouble happening there!"
She never expected that a mere outing could turn into such a frightening event.
Lu Chen soothed her by patting her on the head, "Don’t panic, it might just be a minor earthquake. It’s getting late, let’s proceed with our mission, and we’ll talk about it later."
The soldiers echoed this sentiment.
Everyone got back into the vehicles and continued toward the base of the mountain along the crack.
Su Mo leaned on the car window, looking down. The crack beneath was pitch-black, as if the ground had been torn into two halves out of nowhere.
At that moment, the refugee camp indeed had become chaotic.
The crack, wider than the span of a hand, directly split the earthen wall standing there in two, causing a massive section of the already high wall to collapse inward instantly, crushing many pedestrians passing below and causing screams to pierce the skies.
The chicken coop was at the base of the mountain, originally blocked by a large iron gate; behind it was a forest of an unknown species that hadn’t withered and still appeared lush and verdant.
