Chapter 801: Chapter 801: Show Her Who’s Boss
"That’s really great," Cheng Bingbing couldn’t help but smile when she saw Xia Qingtian was willing to keep her company.
It was the happiest, and the most heartfelt smile she had all day.
...
The next day.
Xia Qingtian was still getting ready when she received a call from Cheng Bingbing, confirming whether she had left home or would change her mind at the last minute.
It was clear Cheng Bingbing was really nervous, afraid that Qingtian would stand her up and leave her to face Mrs. Huo alone.
"I’m already up, I’ll change clothes in a bit and have some breakfast, then come pick you up," she reassured Cheng Bingbing, saying, "Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time before the meeting with Mrs. Huo, we won’t be late."
"Mhm," Cheng Bingbing replied, sounding somewhat tense.
Qingtian knew it was impossible to completely ease her anxiety, so she simply gave up trying and just reminded her, "Then wait for me at home, and remember to have some breakfast. You need to be fully energized to face the battle."
Bingbing was amused by her words, "Qingtian, you’re exaggerating. It’s just a meeting with Mrs. Huo."
Seeing her laugh, Qingtian said helplessly, "You know it’s just a meeting with Mrs. Huo, and she’s just a normal person, not some kind of monster with three heads and six arms. What’s there to be afraid of?"
"Every parent in this world who loves their children eventually can’t stand up against them. As long as Huo Qilin is determined enough, Mrs. Huo won’t be his match and won’t be an obstacle to your relationship."
"Is that so?" Cheng Bingbing murmured.
Her parents preferred boys over girls and only treated her as a tool to procure a dowry and provide a comfortable life for her brother. She had never felt her parents’ love, so she had no understanding of Qingtian’s words.
"Of course, you trust me!" Qingtian said with conviction.
Her words calmed Bingbing somewhat, for she had never doubted Qilin’s love for her.
Knowing Bingbing was waiting, Qingtian quickly ate some breakfast and rushed to pick up Bingbing, then the two of them went to the place where they had agreed to meet Mrs. Huo.
They arrived quite early, more than an hour before the appointed time.
Qingtian suggested that since Mrs. Huo hadn’t arrived yet, there was no need to wait there. They could go shopping for clothes and jewelry or the latest makeup, which could come in handy when they went to auditions or endorsements.
But Cheng Bingbing stubbornly chose to wait for Mrs. Huo at the agreed-upon coffee shop.
She was afraid Mrs. Huo might arrive early and get a bad impression of her for not being there.
Seeing her insistence, Qingtian didn’t push any further and stayed with her in the coffee shop, although they didn’t sit together; she chose a spot not far from Bingbing.
They waited like this for over an hour.
The appointed time with Mrs. Huo had come and even passed by half an hour, but Mrs. Huo was nowhere to be seen.
Several empty coffee cups already sat in front of Qingtian.
She went over to Bingbing and asked, "Bingbing, are you sure Mrs. Huo will come today?"
Cheng Bingbing pursed her lips, somewhat unsure, "She should, I guess."
She dared not speak with too much certainty.
They had already been waiting for half an hour, and she was worried Qingtian had grown tired of waiting, so she suggested, "Qingtian, if it’s not working out, you can go back first or take a walk nearby."
Xia Qingtian was indeed growing somewhat impatient.
Hearing Cheng Bingbing’s suggestion, she asked, "What about you?"
Cheng Bingbing remained seated, speaking softly, "I’ll wait here a bit longer. Auntie might have been delayed by something, she should arrive soon."
Xia Qingtian suspected that Mrs. Huo was likely doing this intentionally, as a way to assert dominance over Cheng Bingbing.
Of course, she didn’t voice this thought, as Cheng Bingbing was already quite nervous, so there was no need to add to her stress.
She could not just abandon Cheng Bingbing, nor did she wish to continue waiting here pointlessly, so she suggested, "Why don’t you give her a call? Ask if something’s come up, or if she wants to reschedule for another day."
"That works!" Cheng Bingbing nodded in agreement with the suggestion.
She took out her phone and dialed Mrs. Huo’s number.
After waiting a while, her expression became somewhat strained, and she said with a hint of embarrassment, "She might be busy, she didn’t pick up."
Xia Qingtian shook her head helplessly.
Now, it was certain, Mrs. Huo was doing this on purpose.
She asked Cheng Bingbing, "Do you still want to wait?"
Cheng Bingbing pursed her lips and finally gave a definitive answer, "Let’s wait."
She truly liked Huo Qilin and wanted to be with him. She also hoped to gain his family’s approval. Even if it meant suffering some indignities now, she was willing to endure it.
Besides, waiting a bit longer for Mrs. Huo was merely a matter of spending some time. For her, it did not amount to much trouble. Mrs. Huo hadn’t scolded or hit her, after all. During her childhood, her parents often resorted to hitting and scolding her, so she didn’t feel too upset by this situation.
"Okay, I’ll wait with you." Xia Qingtian nodded.
She was only there to accompany Cheng Bingbing today. Ultimately, whatever decision was to be made would have to come from Cheng Bingbing. The only thing Xia Qingtian could do was to respect her decision and stand by her side at the critical moment.
The two waited for a long time, nearly two hours.
Just as Xia Qingtian was about to lose patience and insist that Cheng Bingbing leave with her, no longer willing to stay and be played for a fool by Mrs. Huo, Mrs. Huo finally arrived, fashionably late.
Seeing Mrs. Huo, Cheng Bingbing immediately got up, tense and uncertain where to put her hands.
"Auntie..." She greeted Mrs. Huo politely and showed no resentment for having been made to wait two hours.
Mrs. Huo glanced at her coldly and acknowledged her with a noncommittal hum from her nose.
Cheng Bingbing didn’t get angry, maintaining her pleasant demeanor she asked, "What would you like to drink, Auntie? I’ll order for you."
"An Americano," Mrs. Huo replied elegantly, casually placing her exceedingly expensive crocodile skin handbag to one side.
The Americano arrived quickly.
Mrs. Huo picked up her coffee and stirred it slowly, not uttering a word.
Cheng Bingbing, very nervous, took the initiative and asked, "Auntie, did you arrange to meet with me today for something specific? Or is it something about Qilin?"
Her expression turned uncertain as she mentioned that last question.
Although Huo Qilin had been brought back home by Mrs. Huo, they had talked on the phone every day, and Huo Qilin mentioned nothing about having any issues.
