Chapter 552: Chapter 552 I’m So Scared_1
Upon hearing Xia Qingtian’s voice, Bo Jingyan abruptly turned around.
The expressionless facade he had initially worn melted away like thawing snow, revealing a warm affection that was as vivid as it was endearing. Endless tenderness could be seen glistening in the depths of his eyes.
Shi Qian also noticed Xia Qingtian, and her face turned grim.
In her eyes, Xia Qingtian always seemed to create trouble for her, never bringing about any good news.
Ignoring Shi Qian’s sour expression, Bo Jingyan softly gazed at Xia Qingtian, his voice slightly husky as he asked, "What brings you here?"
The moment Xia Qingtian heard his question, her mood brightened slightly.
It was evident that Bo Jingyan had been unaware of her hospitalization due to illness; that’s why he hadn’t visited her at the hospital.
But then, she remembered his failure to show up for their planned meetup over the weekend.
Having looked forward to and made preparations for their rendezvous with so much anticipation, only for Bo Jingyan to stand her up, just recalling the incident filled her with frustration.
Consequently, Xia Qingtian’s face clouded over once again.
"Do you remember our arrangements for the weekend?" She asked, gazing intently at Bo Jingyan’s face, "Don’t you owe me an explanation?"
He wasn’t an irresponsible person. He must have had some significant issue that forced him to cancel their plans for the weekend.
Therefore, she was willing to suppress her simmering anger and give Bo Jingyan a chance to explain his actions.
If he could provide a reasonable explanation, she was ready to let their previous weekend’s incident slide.
All the preparations she had made would be wasted, and she was okay with it, as long as he was safe and sound.
Xia Qingtian had mentally prepared herself to hear his explanations.
Bo Jingyan parted his lips to speak, "I’m sorry."
She waited for a while, but when no further explanation came from him, she realized, belatedly, that the only thing he was going to say was, "I’m sorry".
He didn’t seem inclined to explain anything else.
Xia Qingtian was left in disbelief.
She came to terms with the situation, deciding that as long as Bo Jingyan gave her a reasonable explanation, she would let everything slide as if none of it ever happened.
But what about Bo Jingyan?
He didn’t even bother to provide an explanation!
"Bo Jingyan, what do you mean by this?" Xia Qingtian asked coldly.
Bo Jingyan, as if suddenly deep in thought, looked even more troubled. A flicker of pain flashed across his profound eyes, rapidly suppressed, and he instantly reverted to his calm and composed self.
Watching the turbulent tension brewing between the two, Shi Qian felt a flicker of joy.
It appeared that there was a conflict between Xia Qingtian and Brother Jingyan.
Wasn’t this her opportunity?
With this thought, Shi Qian’s tone was filled with smug satisfaction. "Qingtian, don’t you get it? Brother Jingyan means there’s nothing worth commenting about. Could you stop badgering him with questions? It’s really annoying."
"Shi Qian..." Bo Jingyan glanced at her disapprovingly, warning her with the way he uttered her name.
Shi Qian instinctively shrunk back a little with fear.
However, she immediately remembered how Bo Jingyan’s attitude towards his mother had completely changed recently, and he was perfectly agreeable to everything she said.
Due to his mother’s deliberate efforts, Bo Jingyan had surprisingly even allowed her to stay close to him.
Although she didn’t exactly understand why he had changed his perception of her so drastically, she was confident that with his mother’s support, he wouldn’t do her any harm.
With this thought, Shi Qian regained her confidence.
"Isn’t what I said true?" She challenged Xia Qingtian. "The reason Brother Jingyan didn’t show up for the weekend is quite simple. He didn’t want to!"
"He didn’t say so explicitly only to spare you the embarrassment. But you, you just don’t get it. And now, you’re forcing him to make the unsaid obvious. What a shameless idiot!"
By the end of her rant, she snorted derisively.
"Shut up!" Xia Qingtian was extremely irritated. Having to listen to Shi Qian’s seemingly endless chatter only added to her annoyance. She coldly warned, "Keep up with your annoying little comments, dare me, and I’ll rip your mouth apart."
"I’m only stating the truth. So..." Shi Qian continued smugly, "Did I hit a nerve? You mad? If you have the guts, hit me!"
By the time she finished, her face was beaming with arrogance.
Now, she felt certain that Bo Jingyan was on her side, defending her and his mother. She didn’t believe that Xia Qingtian would dare to strike her in front of Bo Jingyan, hence her audacity.
Observing Shi Qian’s insufferable attitude, Xia Qingtian could only laugh in spite of herself, "This is a first for me. I’ve never come across such a shameless request. Since you’re practically begging for a beating, I guess... I’ll indulge you!"
As she spoke, she swiftly lifted her hand, and dealt a resounding slap across Shi Qian’s face.
For a moment, Shi Qian was too stunned to react, unsure of what had transpired. It wasn’t until a burning pain registered on her slapped cheek did she realize that Xia Qingtian had indeed slapped her.
"Xia Qingtian, how dare you hit me!" Shi Qian fumed.
"Oh, I dare alright," Xia Qingtian scoffed, "Also, didn’t you ask for it? One slap isn’t enough? How about another one for good measure?"
No sooner had she finished speaking, she lifted her hand again.
This time, she didn’t plan on laying a hand on Shi Qian, it was merely an empty threat to scare her off, to keep her from interrupting her conversation with Bo Jingyan.
She was determined to get Bo Jingyan to clarify the actual reason behind his failure to attend their weekend rendezvous.
Seeing Xia Qingtian’s raised hand, Shi Qian wanted to retaliate, but quickly thought better of it when she saw Bo Jingyan next to her.
Deciding to change tactics, she quickly shifted her demeanor to appear vulnerable and cowered behind Bo Jingyan.
A weak voice pleaded, "Brother Jingyan, I’m scared..."
Xia Qingtian rolled her eyes at Shi Qian’s poorly-executed act of pitiful innocence. She felt confident that Bo Jingyan would see right through it, and wouldn’t need to step in to silence her.
With that thought in mind, Xia Qingtian prepared to lower her raised hand.
But before she could, a strong, well-worn hand grabbed ahold of her raised one.
Looking up, she realized that the one preventing her from striking Shi Qian, was none other than -
Bo Jingyan!
At that moment, a hint of helplessness flickered across Bo Jingyan’s stern face as he said, "Qingtian, that’s enough."
Xia Qingtian gave Bo Jingyan a look that was full of disbelief.
She could hardly believe that Bo Jingyan would actually stop her from slapping Shi Qian and then tell her that enough was enough. It was as if, together with Shi Qian, he had completely turned against her.
So, she didn’t bother to explain that she hadn’t planned to slap Shi Qian a second time and that raising her hand had only been a strategy to scare her off.
She just silently locked eyes with Bo Jingyan’s profound, seemingly emotionless orbs.
