Chapter 769: Chapter 748: Wedding Gift
For a moment, Ivy Aretha didn’t know what to say, feeling unaccustomed to the gaze of an elder that seemed somewhat emotional.
"Let’s go inside first, the wind is strong outside. Michael should be back soon!"
"Alright, but I’m not looking for Michael, I’m looking for you!"
Hearing this, Calvin Gordon nodded and shifted his crutch slightly.
"If you’re looking for me, let’s go inside as well!"
"Okay!"
When Calvin Gordon followed everyone into the house, the villa’s large living room became quiet instantly. Ivy and Calvin sat facing each other while Sienna Harrison and Jaysen Smith retreated to a sofa on the side. Julia Harrison also stepped back a few steps, but still remained within the range of the pregnant Ivy. In any case, a woman in her condition needed close attention.
Oliver Thompson simply went upstairs to sleep.
He was not suited for experiencing the conflict between a father-in-law and his daughter-in-law, given his personality.
"Uh...Ivy..." Michael Gordon hesitated for a long time before finally initiating the conversation, struggling to say his words, as if he had clenched his teeth and made a great determination, "Today...I mainly came here to apologize to you for what I did previously!"
"Well..."
No matter what, Calvin Gordon was her elder, and she felt uneasy when he apologized so directly. She became nervous instantly, "There’s no need for that!"
"I’m sorry. I should not have jumped to conclusions without investigating properly. I formally apologize to you and hope you can forgive me!"
After saying this, Calvin Gordon, leaning on his crutch, stood up from the sofa and bowed deeply to Ivy. His weak and tired posture resembled someone who had experienced a great catastrophe. Ivy quickly stood up to help him but was refused by his outstretched hand.
Perhaps it was because of the recent near-death experience, but Calvin Gordon looked much older: "Ah, Chairman Gordon, please get up. Bending down so low is not good for the child!"
Ivy understood his thoughts. Michael had already told him about the situation the previous night. Now that he was behaving this way and refusing her help, he was probably expecting her forgiveness before he would get up. So, Ivy had to mention the child.
"Oh, I’m sorry!"
As expected, Calvin Gordon raised his head quickly after hearing her words, "It was my oversight. I shouldn’t have made such a gesture!"
It wasn’t appropriate for Ivy, being pregnant, to receive any deep bows from her elders.
"Ivy, can you forgive me? I was wrong. Please forgive me for my old age, and I promise to make it up to you, alright?"
By the end of his plea, Calvin Gordon’s voice had become almost begging. Ivy gazed at him with furrowed brows and complex emotions. The man before her was a far cry from the self-assured elder who had once angrily claimed that she would never set foot in the Gordon family as long as he was alive.
However, in just a year, the changes had been so drastic that it was impossible to discern right from wrong. From his standpoint, he had done nothing wrong, and it could only be attributed to fate being cruel.
"Dad, may I call you that now?"
Being indirectly confrontational was not Ivy’s style, so she decided to be straightforward about her feelings. The relationship between her and Calvin had been tense for over a year, and she was desperate for peace and harmony. It wasn’t that she didn’t harbor resentful feelings, but he was Michael’s father. She would rather suffer a bit to spare her husband the burden.
One second, two seconds, three seconds...
Calvin Gordon’s eyes widened in disbelief, inch by inch, as he stared at her. The euphoria following his initial shock surged forth, and his trembling lips took a while to say what his heart wanted: "Ivy, do you really still want to call me ’Dad’ in spite of how I treated you before?"
He had once almost taken her life and been so resolute in his words, so Calvin, the one who had founded the Gordon Group, was a principled man. His methods might have been extreme, but it was because of his deep emotional scars. Standing in his shoes, Ivy felt that she had not been wronged either.
"You didn’t treat me that badly. Although I’m not Marina Sanders’ biological daughter, she raised me for a few years and was still my mother in a sense. Birth or upbringing, it’s all the same. If she made a mistake, I’ll bear the consequences on her behalf. You didn’t do anything wrong. So, let’s not mention ’sorry’ again. Let’s just move on from the past and live well as a family in the future!"
Live well together as a family?
This sentence successfully touched the softest part of Calvin Gordon’s heart. He had already passed sixty, and due to the immense stress in his younger years, he aged faster than most people. Calvin was a self-made man who had lost his father as a teenager and his mother in middle age. Not long after getting married, his wife passed away before Michael reached adulthood. Strictly speaking, his life had been filled with one wave of challenges after another.
He had never once experienced a quiet life. If Michael was considered the leader of Allure International, which became a global sensation, then Calvin was the one who had given him the starting point as a wealthy dynasty creator—a self-made tycoon and a golden-key-born heir.
Calvin Gordon’s life had never been mundane. He had enjoyed vast wealth, but never a peaceful and warm life that he could have expected from Michael marrying Alya Larson and living with Risa Scott’s family in harmony and bliss during his final years.
Who would have expected that things didn’t turn out as he had hoped? Michael fell in love with Ivy, vowed to marry no one else, and caused this giant misunderstanding. Calvin had nearly driven himself mad with anger thinking that after all these years of devotion, Risa still could not be satisfied. He knew she was greedy, but as long as it fell within his acceptable range, he would oblige to her desires.
Unfortunately, she even competed for what he had left for his own son and eventually plotted for his life. From that day on, he lost all hope for a peaceful life, as his warm and cozy home was gone. However, when Ivy spoke the words today, his emotions were so complex that he could not fathom them.
"Yes, let’s all live well together as a family!"
Calvin Gordon was greatly moved, his voice choked with emotion, and his trembling hands fumbling in his pocket to retrieve something. Oh, yes, the wedding gift he had prepared for his daughter-in-law!
