Chapter 373: Qixi Festival (9)

Chunhua was considering being a temporary thug. It’s the fastest way she can think of.

"You haven’t even tried it." Haoran send her a meaningful stare before pinching the nut and bringing it near her mouth.

Enticed by the sent, Chunhua opened her mouth.

Now it was Haoran’s turn to be touched by a soft pair of lips. He didn’t show any expression albeit his eyes dark like the bottom of the ocean and swirling with undercurrent waves.

"How about I’ll do the peeling?" Chunhua tried to grab the bag but Haoran brought it away.

"Let me." Haoran slipped the bags in his arms and continued to peel the chestnuts.

In the midst of their stroll, the sky darkened and there was a light rain, Haoran narrowed his eyes at the abrupt shift of the weather.

However when he noticed the rain drizzling onto the girl, he lifted the bags over Chunhua’s head.

"You’re wet too, A’Ran! It isn’t nice to get a cold." Chunhua also raised her pink bag, tiptoed, and placed it over the man.

Seeing her stubborn, Haoran only lowered his head.

Chunhua could finally walk properly. How she wished she was tall too...

On the angle Chunhua didn’t see, Haoran’s lips upturned as he stuck himself closer to her.

The two took shelter in a nearby one-story small temple at the end of the path. The entrance had statues of imposing guarding golden lions on each side. Surprisingly, the two couldn’t see nor sense a single person nearby.

It was eerily quiet.

Entering the temple, they saw two buildings, a Bell Tower in the east and Drum Tower in the west.

Along the central axis, there is a large hall filled with pillars, incense burners, and altar which had the large statue of Guanyin. There are no dusts, it was very clean and there were even smoke coming from the incense sticks which meant there should be people taking care of the temple.

Midway of their inspection, they heard a voice from behind them, "Benefactors, welcome to the Temple of Benevolence and Fortune. Are you here for a future reading?"

Chunhua and Haoran turned around and saw an old monk wearing a brown tunic and holding a buddhist beads on his right hand. He greeted them with a genial smile. He had white thick eyebrows and long white beard.

Haoran was about to reject because he doesn’t believe in any of these things but Chunhua was ahead of him.

"Abbot, is it for free?" She never expected to meet a monk with divination skills in this reward world.

The old monk widened his smile and nodded, "Benefactors didn’t need to pay anything."

"Wait, Abbot." Chunhua turned to Haoran, leaned in his ears to explain, "In our world, such opportunities are rare. Monks with divination abilities often became hermits, lives in secluded corners of the world or ask for exorbitant prizes for one reading, A’Ran. And we won’t lose anything." Chunhua persuaded the man.

Haoran hid the blush on the tip of his ears and finally agreed, "Alright," albeit his eyes were containing a bit of suspiciousness.

The monk bent his back and led them to the altar. Two one-foot bamboo holders filled with red guanyin sticks were placed on the table.

Chunhua and Haoran held the chim buckets, shook them, sticks fell out of them. The monk saw the number on the buddhist sticks and rubbed the Buddhist beads with his thumb, "Amitabha."

After 20 minutes when the rain had stopped, the two exited the temple.

The old monk stared at the two’s disappearing back before sighing in regret.

"What is Abbot thinking off?" Behind the old monk, a young monk appeared.

"It is rare to encounter someone to have buddhist root, much more, two at the same time. If they were not destined for greater things, this old one would have invited them to the temple." Another sigh escaped his lips.,

"Who is Ancestor talking about?" The young monk was curious and looked ahead but Chunhua and Haoran had long departed the place.

"They’ve long gone. Such is fate. This old one would not probably see them again." At least not in this lifetime. The old monk turned around and walked towards the two sticks resting on the table.

When Haoran left the temple, the words and frown of the monk still lingered in his head.

’A worried rider driving a horse on a steep route. Trouble if they leave the unit. Broken oars amid wild waves. Darker days, wilted flowers, and snowfall begin.’

’This scene shows a broken boat being swept along by a strong wind. Everything is so dangerous that you must stay on guard and take care.’

While Chunhua also thought of hers...

’Everything was predestined at creation. Fruits ripen on good days. A pleasant lot is frequent. King declares faithful and honest.’

’This is a good lot. The origin of the planet is implied by this package. All aspects of life are seen to be flourishing. Even if it hasn’t happened yet, a wonderful fortune is coming your way. The Benefactor is favored by the Heavens, even when one does nothing; one will have many opportunities coming on your way.’

Because it was only a light rain, it didn’t stop the enthusiasm of the shopkeepers to set up back their stalls and visitors from strolling around. The pathways were bustling again after a few minutes.

"Five Fortune Dumplings for only 3 yuan!"

"Photo booth for couples!"

"Come and try my tanghulu for 5 yuan!"

"Stick figures, stick figures, anyone!"

"Anyone wants a lotus lantern, we have a free calligraphy writing services for anyone who wants!"

Chunhua and Haoran returned to Grandma Mei’s shop.

Grandma Mei who was anxiously pacing back and forth was happy when she saw the two together again.

"Yatou, don’t run off just like that. I and Xiao Ran were really worried for you."

"Grandma, I’m sorry for what I did. That was disrespectful of me." Chunhua apologized.

"It isn’t. I understand you." Grandma Mei held the girl’s palm and rubbed it. "Yatou, take care of Xiao Ran. He’s been through a lot and I can see that when he’s beside you, he’s not looking like a grumpy snowman all day."

"Don’t worry Grandma, there will be no winter and only spring!" Grandma Mei rubbed the girl’s head.

"I’m counting on you."

Grandma Mei talked for a few minutes more before she sent the two off. "Be careful on the road!"

"You too!" Chunhua and Haoran waved their hands.

"Where do you want to go next, Chef Long?" Chunhua asked.

Haoran remembered a particular shop they passed by minutes ago and led her towards it.

"Hello Customers, are you here to take a photo? We have several package. The cheapest one cost 50 yuan and you would be led inside a studio for a one frame shot, the second one is priced at 500 yuan, where you get to enter the marvelous imperial garden of the famous pagoda..." One of the server saw them stopped by in front of the shop and greeted them.

500 yuan? It is so expensive!

Chunhua wanted to say something but someone beat her to it.

"I will avail the last one." Haoran quickly paid the 500 yuan.

The server’s eyes shone and she welcomed them inside. "Thank you Customer. Follow me."

When the Chunhua and Haoran saw the interiors of the booth, they were stunned by the array of the red wedding dresses. There were other couples inside too.

What kind of photo booth is this?! Chunhua was speechless.

"You can choose any of your liking! Afterwards, I’ll bring you to the garden! He he."

The Server chuckled, winked and left the two on their own.

Chunhua’s cheeks burned recalling the dream.

Haoran, however, suppressed the tiny smile blooming on his lips before pulling her gently towards the dress racks.
