“Click.”
The door locked.
Dr. Qin reached out, fumbling for the light switch, but before touching it, he felt a hand…
He jerked his hand back sharply, “Who?!”
Suddenly, the light came on.
What entered Dr. Qin’s sight was a somewhat honest-looking face, a familiar one at that: “Dr. Qin, it’s me.”
It was Ah Wan.
Dr. Qin turned and ran.
Thud, the door was stopped by Ah Wan’s foot: “Don’t be in such a rush to leave, my boss still has a question for you.”
Dr. Qin didn’t look back; he felt for the hallway stool, about to make a move on Ah Wan, when a voice rang out.
“Move again, and I’ll blow your brains out.”
That voice was the sound of a bullet being chambered.
The words were spoken by Jiang Zhi.
Dr. Qin froze in place.
Ah Wan was also struck dumb, scared stiff.
Jiang Zhi was sitting on the living room sofa, toying with a small gun.
“Where is Jiang Fuxi?”
Dr. Qin didn’t hesitate: “I don’t know.”
“Where?” He asked again.
“I don’t know.”
The same answer.
“If I can’t get any information out of you,” Jiang Zhi stood up, the gun barrel turning in his hand, pointing at Dr. Qin, “then there’s no use keeping you alive.”
His finger moved to the trigger—
“Wait,” Dr. Qin slowed down, “Slinaton, she’s in Slinaton.”
“Be more specific.”
Jiang Zhi’s fingers, long and pale, contrasted with the gun’s black, offering a strange visual impact.
Dr. Qin, usually a man of integrity, was now sweating bullets with the gun pointed at his head: “I only took her to the ferry, the boat was going to Slinaton, I don’t know anything else.”
Jiang Zhi narrowed his eyes, pondering for a moment: “If you dare tip anyone off,”
He didn’t finish his sentence, put away the gun, and dialed a phone: “She’s in Slinaton.”
After they left Dr. Qin’s place, Ah Wan couldn’t help it: “Boss,” he was a bit frantic.
Jiang Zhi walked ahead, ignoring him.
Ah Wan followed, still not recovered, his heart pounding: “If Dr. Qin hadn’t spoken,” he cautiously observed Jiang Zhi’s expression, “would you really have shot him?”
Jiang Zhi got into the elevator: “I don’t do illegal things.”
You don’t do them often?
Ah Wan took a sneak peek at Jiang Zhi’s pocket, where the gun was still tucked away; as a loyal subordinate, he kindly reminded him: “Boss, carrying a gun is an illegal act.”
Jiang Zhi stretched out his hand and pressed the button for the first floor.
The elevator doors closed, and he suddenly drew the gun, turned it around, aiming directly at Ah Wan.
Fuck!
Ah Wan shuddered in fear: “Bo-bo-boss, what are you doing?” Was this to silence a witness? A closed-door murder?
Jiang Zhi looked mockingly, his finger slowly moving to the trigger.
Ah Wan immediately crouched down with his hands over his head.
“Peew peew peew!”
That sound resembled the sound effects of a rocket launch.
Ah Wan peeked over timidly.
“This is a toy gun.” Jiang Zhi looked down at him as if he were looking at an idiot, “Moron.”
“Idiot” Ah Wan: “…”
Damn it! Jiang Zhi, damn it!
Less than three minutes after Jiang Zhi left, Dr. Qin made a phone call.
“Fuxi.”
“What’s happened?”
Dr. Qin, unlike his usual composure, spoke with urgency: “Jiang Zhi just came by, get out of Slinaton now.”
Her reaction was indifferent: “You told him?”
Dr. Qin explained: “I didn’t give the exact address.”
“You betrayed me.”
Her tone remained calm and gentle, not betraying any emotion.
Dr. Qin was her loyal subject, yet after many years, he still couldn’t read her: “Didn’t you say it was fine as long as I didn’t give the specific location—”
Her voice, airy and soft, cut him off: “If I tell you to speak, you speak; if I tell you to kill me, will you?”
Dr. Qin became speechless.
“Fuxi, I told you the location, not for you to use it to save your life, but to teach you one thing,” she always spoke so softly, “you can die, but you cannot betray me.”
“Fuxi, I—”
The call had already been disconnected.
Outside the window, a faint orange glow signaled the sun’s rise.
Jiang Fuxi’s room was high up, offering a panoramic view of the entire slum, the curtains mostly drawn, letting just a sliver of light in, her face half in shadow, the phone to her ear.
“Have you secured the shares?”
The voice on the other end was Jiang Fuli: “Where are you?”
“Cousin, knowing too much isn’t good for you,” Jiang Fuxi asked with a smile, “I gave you all the shares, how about you do me a favor?”
“Let’s hear it.”
With the time difference between the two cities, the Imperial City had already fallen into night.
Right after Jiang Zhi left the residential area where Dr. Qin lived, he received a call from Qiao Nanchu: “I’ve found the address.”
“Where?”
Qiao Nanchu said: “Pullman, Redwood Wind.”
Jiang Fuxi wasn’t in Slinaton at all; she didn’t trust Dr. Qin.
Jiang Zhi’s trip wasn’t entirely certain.
He was prepared for both possibilities; if Dr. Qin knew Jiang Fuxi’s address, real or fake, he had to force it out of him. If Dr. Qin didn’t know Jiang Fuxi’s address, he would pretend to take a call, as if he’d found the address himself.
After all, his purpose for this trip wasn’t to find the address because people can lie, and the address obtained might not be trustworthy. His true aim was the last thing he said: “If you dare to tip anyone off…”
If Dr. Qin dared to leak information, Wen Baiyang would be able to track Jiang Fuxi’s real address through her phone.
That’s right, someone had tampered with Dr. Qin’s phone yesterday; he was infatuated with Jiang Fuxi, but he also treasured his own life, so he would choose to save himself and also signal for help.
