Chapter 431: 431: Xu Fang’s transfusion was successful; the murderer is him! (First update
“Where’s the patient, Zhou Xufang?”
The head nurse immediately raised her hand: “Over here!”
The nurse delivering the blood was a bit overweight, huffing and puffing as she hurried over.
Jiang Zhi stopped her: “Mask.”
She paused, then took off her mask.
Jiang Zhi took a photo of her and sent it to Su Lihua.
Su Lihua replied with a single word: “Hmm.” It was someone he had sent.
Only then did the head nurse take the blood transport box. Inside, Dr. Zhong called out “Nurse Xu,” and she responded, entering the operating room.
The nurse delivering blood was from Ren De Hospital’s hematology department and went back on her own after completing her task.
The surgery was still going on when Qiao Nanchu took a call midway—it was from Captain Cheng of the Criminal Investigation Team.
“Found anything?”
Captain Cheng said, “The parking lot surveillance has been sabotaged, and the perpetrator wasn’t captured. Zhou Xufang’s car was burned to cinders; it’s unlikely that we’ll retrieve any evidence from it.”
That meant it was deliberate.
Qiao Nanchu asked, “What about the surveillance on the first floor?”
“First-floor surveillance isn’t damaged, but when the alarm went off, over four hundred people rushed out at once, all with panicked faces and covering their mouths. They all look like suspects.” Captain Cheng was at a loss for the moment, “How’s Zhou Xufang doing?”
“Still in surgery.”
Poor thing, a pregnant young girl…
After some thought, Captain Cheng said, “This doesn’t seem like antisocial behavior. I reckon it’s a vendetta. We have to start with Zhou Xufang.”
If it were a vendetta…
Qiao Nanchu offered a few leads: “The Jiang Family, the Xu Family, the Luo Family.”
Aside from that crazy one from the Luo Family, there’s only Luo Ying and her mother left. That girl has been running around playing extras to make ends meet recently—she wouldn’t have time to deal with bombs. That leaves the Jiangs and the Xus, who are all Jiang Zhi’s enemies. If it’s targeted at Jiang Zhi, then we’ll have to expand the range of suspects. He doesn’t have a whole basket of enemies, but he does have half a basket.
Captain Cheng said with a headache, “Alright, I’ll look into it further.” He also had another question, “Something doesn’t add up.”
“What is it?”
“The alarm went off before the explosion. It must have been Zhou Xufang’s doing.” To have the presence of mind to move the crowd at such a time, she was no ordinary person.
Qiao Nanchu just hmm’ed, revealing nothing.
Captain Cheng, driven by curiosity, pressed, “How did she manage that?” Fire sensors were installed high up, about seven or eight meters—did she fly up there?
Qiao Nanchu replied indifferently, “She can fly.”
“…” Bullshit!
Funeral home.
It was almost dark by the time Jiang Chuan showed up.
Jiang Xiaolin asked him, “Where have you been?”
Jiang Chuan replied, “I went back to the old house for a bit, to pick a few things the Old Madam liked before she passed away.”
Jiang Xiaolin glanced at his shoes, said nothing, and turned to leave.
Lying.
It had rained in the morning; the old house had a mud yard, but his shoes were too clean.
There were no mourning guests at this hour, just Jiang Wei’er keeping vigil. Jiang Chuan walked in, bent down, his back to Jiang Wei’er. There was a brazier in front of him, next to which was paper money.
He pulled an envelope from his sleeve and added it to the brazier along with the paper money.
“Miss.” This term of address was only used before Xu Jiuru was married, “You can rest in peace now.”
There was a blue flame in the brazier. The outer paper caught fire first, revealing a corner of the envelope. Inside was Xu Jiuru’s suicide note with just one sentence—
If Zhou Xufang doesn’t die, I shall have no peace below.
The surgery lasted over three hours and it was completely dark by the time it finished.
Dr. Zhong stepped out of the operating room, and Yao Bixi immediately asked, “How did it go?”
“The surgery was very successful.”
Everyone waiting outside the patient’s room breathed a sigh of relief, except for Jiang Zhi.
Dr. Zhong approached Jiang Zhi specifically, “The bleeding has stopped, and if she gets through tonight, she should be fine.”
Zhou Xufang’s self-healing abilities were extraordinary; as long as the bleeding was under control, her recovery would be swift.
Jiang Zhi was as pale as the just-operated-on Zhou Xufang, lips bright red, bloodied from biting: “And the baby?”
“We took the fetus into account with the medication used during surgery, no abnormalities detected so far. But the prenatal check-ups need to be monitored closely. If any issues arise,” Dr. Zhong paused, “we may have to terminate the pregnancy.”
Jiang Zhi’s eyes seemed like the oppressive sky after a storm, heavy and suffocating.
“Much appreciated.”
“It’s my duty.” Dr. Zhong, a former battlefield medic, had seen many psychologically traumatized patients. Their expressions resembled Jiang Zhi’s current state.
He thought Jiang Zhi needed trauma therapy, but this would have to come from Zhou Xufang.
“Thank you,” Jiang Zhi repeated earnestly, “Thank you.”
Dr. Zhong shook his head and said no thanks were needed.
Xue Baoyi wore a complicated expression. He had never seen Jiang Zhi like this. Jiang Zhi used to be so proud and hot-tempered, counting the times he said thank you on one hand—repeating it over and over again like this was a first.
Xue Baoyi glanced at the wall beside the operating room. It was scratched up, with traces of blood—Jiang Zhi’s blood. He had been standing there, gouging the wall, scraping his hands until they bled.
Thankfully, Zhou Xufang was safe and sound. Otherwise, Jiang Zhi wouldn’t have made it through tonight.
“I’ll stay at the hospital,” Jiang Zhi said, “You all can go back.”
His voice sounded off, both raspy and weak.
Lu Xinglan, struggling with drowsiness, wondered whether to stay or not. Lin Qiunan stood up from the chair: “We’ll come back tomorrow morning. Call home if anything happens.”
“Hmm.”
The Lu Family and Zhou Qingrang left first.
As Xue Baoyi was about to leave, Jiang Zhi stopped him, “Bao Yi, get some bodyguards over here.”
