Chapter 382: 382: Jiang Zhi’s Hidden Beauty, Xinglan’s little ancestor sells insurance (Second Update)
Jiang Xiaolin answered irrelevantly, “How old was that guy just now?”
What kind of bizarre question was that?
Tang Xiang responded, “In his thirties, I guess.” She handed over the contract, asking, “Which data is problematic?”
He still responded irrelevantly, his tone not very pleasant, the usual refined demeanor seemingly devoured by dogs, a mocking smile playing at the corners of his mouth, “Only in his thirties, huh? I thought he was almost forty.”
Where did he look forty?
Tang Xiang rolled her eyes at him, “It’s none of your business how old he is.”
Jiang Xiaolin sat up, glancing up at her, “Why do you still have a taste for that?”
The conversation was becoming more nonsensical by the minute.
Tang Xiang looked at his infuriatingly handsome face, “What taste do I have?”
“Going after older ones, not afraid it’ll hurt your teeth.”
“…”
Her teeth didn’t hurt, they were itchy, she wanted to bite someone, “Are we signing the contract or not? If not, get out.”
Jiang Xiaolin stood up, “Not signing, we’ll talk next time.”
The first time he met Tang Xiang was on the day of new student registration, she helped him retrieve his laptop which had been snatched by a thief, but the screen was broken. He left his number, asking her to pay for it.
Days had passed without a call from her.
The second time he saw her was at the financial major’s class meeting for the cohort of ’09, where she sat two rows in front of him. When she looked back and saw him, she said as if recognizing a fellow townsman, “Classmate, it really is you!”
He had noticed her long before then, her ponytail swinging to and fro. He stood up and moved to the row behind her, “Why didn’t you contact me?”
“Huh?”
He reminded her, “You still haven’t paid for the laptop.”
Her expression stiffened for a moment, “I don’t have that much money right now.”
“Send it via WeChat, you can pay in installments.”
“…”
Tang Xiang gave him her WeChat.
At that moment, she thought, how could there be such a terrible person? Wasting such a handsome face.
Her roommate, sitting beside her, quietly asked, “Tang Xiang, who is that?”
“A creditor!”
Damn it!
She kicked the leg of the table, took out her phone, and started searching for part-time jobs.
Their major’s advisor was a man in his thirties, very witty and humorous, and always dressed neatly.
Her roommate whispered to her, “Our advisor is quite handsome.”
She looked up and glanced at him, “He is quite handsome.”
“Do you like that type?”
She was focused on finding a part-time job, “Yeah.”
“Then I won’t compete with you.”
She calculated in her mind the hourly wage at a beverage store on the school’s pedestrian street, “Yeah.”
Behind her, Jiang Xiaolin glanced at the eloquent man on stage and silently sneered: A man in his thirties, old and nowhere near handsome.
An eighteen-year-old Jiang Xiaolin thought men in their thirties were old.
At twenty-eight, he still felt the same.
Fifth Hospital.
Jiang Zhi wouldn’t let the nurses touch him, it was a male doctor who changed his dressing.
He was on the phone with Qiao Nanchu.
“Luo Changfang embezzled three hundred million, but that sum hasn’t gone through her account, and its whereabouts are still unknown.”
The doctor carried the used IV bag out.
Jiang Zhi made sure he closed the door, then continued with Qiao Nanchu, “She used it to bribe Jiang the Second.”
Jiang Weili wanted to climb higher; the couple, one acting upright in public and the other scheming behind the scenes, had been quite busy with such tricks over the years.
Mid-conversation, Jiang Zhi got out of bed, “Got something here, hanging up now.” He hung up abruptly and pushed the IV stand to the window, “Zhou Xufang?”
A head poked in through the window, “Jiang Zhi, help me open the window.”
Jiang Zhi: “…”
The hospital ward didn’t have security bars, and there she was, clinging to the window frame.
Jiang Zhi, feeling a surge of adrenaline, hurriedly opened the window, “Why are you climbing through the window again?”
She agilely flipped inside, still dressed in nurse’s attire, “There’s a suspicious person loitering by your door, hasn’t left at all. I didn’t dare use the main entrance.”
Outside the hospital room.
The sneaky person tiptoed to the door where, on either side, stood two tall, burly men in black suits, standing straight.
This suspicious person was a girl who looked harmless. She timidly struck up a conversation, “Big brothers, are you bodyguards?”
The two big brothers ignored her.
She scratched her head with an awkward expression, “Is being a bodyguard very tough? It must be quite dangerous, right?”
The two big brothers looked at her with strange eyes.
With a look of immense fear yet brave determination, she timidly asked, “Big brother, would you like to buy some insurance?” She pulled out a document from her backpack, “Insure for a hundred thousand, and receive ten million in case of accidental death.”
The older brother, expressionless, said, “Get lost.”
“…Oh.”
She shrank her neck, so fierce.
This was her first time selling insurance, aiming to earn a hundred thousand to find her benefactor. She needed to sell twenty policies, which seemed so hard.
“Xiangtai.”
She turned around, “I’m here.”
It was her friend, Lin Dongshan.
Both she and Lin Dongshan were nursing students. Lin Dongshan ended up at Fifth Hospital and she at Changkang Hospital. Lin Dongshan was a permanent employee, she was temporary. Lin Dongshan was a top student, she struggled academically, but they were good friends.
“Let’s go.”
“Are you done with your shift?”
“Yes.” Lin Dongshan had already changed clothes.
Hand in hand, they were about to head back to the shared apartment—
“Dongshan,” a nurse from Lin Dongshan’s department came rushing, “The patient in room 403 is showing some abnormalities, the head nurse asked you to come.”
Lin Dongshan checked the time; it was almost six o’clock.
Chen Xiangtai said, “You go ahead, I’ll go to school to pick up Guyu for you.”
Lin Dongshan agreed and left with the department nurse.
Chen Xiangtai lingered in the corridor for a bit, hesitating for a long time before finally gathering the courage. She placed an insurance flyer at the foot of the bodyguard on the left.
Underneath the flyer, written in red pen was: “When buying insurance, be sure to say it was Miss Chen Xiangtai who referred you; you’ll be blessed.” A smiley face was drawn at the end.
The bodyguard crumpled the flyer into a ball and tossed it into the trash can: This insurance seller is a bit silly.
Inside the hospital room, Zhou Xufang: “…”
Sneaking around for half an hour, just to sell insurance.
“Zhou Xufang,” Jiang Zhi lectured with a stern face, “Did you forget about the ‘egg’ in your belly?”
“I didn’t forget.”
“Then you still dare to climb windows?”
Zhou Xufang, with genuine sincerity: “I wanted to see you soon.”
Jiang Zhi: “…”
His anger dissipated.
He couldn’t bring himself to scold her harshly, speaking gently instead, “You can’t climb windows anymore.”
“Not even the second floor?”
Jiang Zhi’s room was on the second floor, which to her was easily reachable with a little jump.
Jiang Zhi firmly said, “No.”
Zhou Xufang: “Oh.”
He pulled over a chair, letting her sit, “Because of the Lu Family’s issues, Xu Jiuru has been keeping an eye on me. It’s not safe for you to be around me. I’ve spoken with Fang Lixiang’s father, and we’ve arranged for you to stay for a few days in that community.”
Zhou Xufang immediately asked, “How will I see you?”
“I will come over at night.”
She then asked, “What about during the day?”
Jiang Zhi smiled, bending over to kiss her cheek, “If you miss me, call me and I’ll sneak over to be with you.”
She looked up, “Okay.”
“But you can’t keep playing on your phone; there’s radiation.”
“Mmm.” She hugged his arm and rubbed her face against his hand, “Jiang Zhi, it feels like we’re having an affair.”
Jiang Zhi moved the IV stand closer and reached to pat her head, correcting, “It’s Hidden Beauty.”
Zhou Xufang nodded with a smile.
He stood and leaned forward to kiss her.
The phone on the bed rang; he let it ring for a while, indulging in the affection before finally answering.
“Mr. Jiang, the results of the paternity test are out,” Vice President Sun said over the phone, “You and Lu Xinglan, are indeed first cousins.”
