Chapter 298: 298: Jiang Zhi Saves His Wife, The Secret of the Genetic Laboratory (First Update)
“Yun—”
The other person shook their head, “Shush.”
Zhou Xufang didn’t make another sound.
Xiao Yusheng pulled her, leading her to the door and grasped the doorknob, about to open it—
Zhou Xufang held his hand, as footsteps outside grew nearer and nearer…
She raised her hand, clenched a fist, and prepared to defend herself.
Click—
“Young Master Zhi.”
The door only opened a crack, then stopped halfway, the pushing hand still resting on the doorknob.
Xiao Yi stepped forward, asking respectfully, “What brings you here?”
Young Master Zhi…
Behind the door, Zhou Xufang’s right eyelid twitched.
Su Qinghou withdrew his hand, leaning against the half-opened doorway, “I came to see if you’ve made any progress over these years.”
Back then in the laboratory, she had secretly stored food for 017, and the young man had commanded that her food be withheld. After several days, he came to see her, holding a meat patty burger, taking a bite then discarding it where she could see but not reach: “Let’s see if you’ve starved to death these past few days…”
Eight years had passed, and he still seemed to be as awful as ever.
Xiao Yi bowed, lowering his head, “The research findings are all downstairs. I will take you there.”
He hummed a response, sauntering away.
A false alarm.
Zhou Xufang took a deep breath, and only when the footsteps had faded did she peek out.
“Come with me.”
Xiao Yusheng led her out. He was clearly familiar with the place, turning left three times and entering a pharmacy with three cabinets, all filled with medicines.
He moved the middle cabinet, and the opposite wall automatically slid to the left, revealing an elevator. After he entered his fingerprint, the door opened.
The elevator ascended from level negative two to level one.
Above, it was a medical research lab, indistinguishable from any ordinary one.
Xiao Yusheng led her out the main door without any explanation, “Escape quickly.”
“And you?”
“I’ll be fine.” He glanced back, his expression tense, urging, “Don’t worry about me, go quickly.”
Zhou Xufang still stood there, looking into the young man’s eyes, “You didn’t escape from that explosion, did you?” He had lied to her; these eight years, he had lived poorly, never gaining freedom.
He was very tense, pulling her towards the back of the lab, “Whether I escape or not doesn’t matter, his target was never me. I and 014 are just failures. He blew up the laboratory to kidnap you.”
Zhou Xufang had a suspicion, “He?”
“It’s Young Master Zhi,” panic flashed through the always somber eyes of the young man, “He’s here, to capture you.”
Young Master Zhi, Su Qinghou, and his father, Su Dingzhi, were rivals. Zhou Xufang was the prey they both coveted. Eight years ago, Su Dingzhi established a human laboratory—011, 014, 017 were all products of the laboratory.
Five years ago, Su Qinghou had the lab bombed using a ton of explosive.
Zhou Xufang had escaped in that explosion.
Xiao Yusheng said, “Xufang, run.”
Pullman’s Young Master Zhi was feared by everyone. He could kill without blinking an eye—such a massive lab, billions in medical equipment, he detonated with a ton of explosives.
Suddenly, someone passed by.
Xiao Yusheng delayed no longer, giving her a push, “Run!”
He turned and went back to the lab.
Zhou Xufang stood for a moment, then walked away.
It was Xiao Yi who came out, meeting Xiao Yusheng at the door, his face stern, “Come with me.”
Xiao Yusheng followed him into the office.
The medical cabinet was moved aside, and the father and son took the elevator down to negative two, entering the room where Zhou Xufang had been held. Xiao Yi closed the door, “Did you let her escape?”
Xiao Yusheng made no excuses, “Yes.”
Xiao Yi, holding back his anger, lowered his voice, “You know better than I do what Su Chan entering Jiang Zhi’s acting crew means. Su Qinghou is outside; he came to Imperial City for 011. By letting her go now, do you think you’re saving her? If I hadn’t arrived in time, she would already be in Su Qinghou’s hands.”
Xiao Yusheng remained silent, his gaze and expression inscrutable, revealing nothing, like an exquisite but lifeless doll.
Xiao Yi was furious, his pupils red, “No place is safer than this underground laboratory. By letting her go, you’re actually endangering her.”
He finally looked up, replying, “Jiang Zhi will be safer.”
Xiao Yi was taken aback, “Yun Sheng, you still don’t trust me.”
The young man in front of him remained silent, all emotions hidden deep within those unfathomable eyes, revealing nothing.
Xiao Yi’s face showed disappointment, “Yun Sheng, only I can help Zhou Xufang, and only Zhou Xufang can save my wife.”
Zhou Xufang’s regenerative ability, if it could be used in medicine, it’s no exaggeration to say that if the research succeeded, human destiny would be rewritten.
Otherwise, why would Su Qinghou be willing to pay such a price just to get her?
Xiao Yi sighed heavily, “If she ends up in the hands of Su Qinghou, we’re all done.”
The young man repeated his previous statement, “Jiang Zhi would be safer.”
Xiao Yi had nothing to say.
Suddenly his phone rang, and Xiao Yi answered it.
“Doctor.”
“What’s the issue?”
The assistant said, “People from the Fifth Hospital have arrived.”
“What are they here for?”
“They said they wanted to see the progress of the cooperation project.”
Xiao Yi glanced at the young man and then headed out the door, “Is it Vice President Sun or Director Qian who has come?”
The assistant answered him, “Neither, it’s Young Master Jiang from the Jiang Family.”
Xiao Yi paused in his steps.
They arrived really fast.
Behind the door, Yun Sheng smiled; he hadn’t spoken wrongly, Jiang Zhi was indeed the safer place.
Xiao Yi came out from his office, his face bearing an expression of surprised honor, “Mr. Jiang, why have you personally come here?”
Jiang Zhi coughed twice, his voice soft, weak, “Here for an inspection.” His eyes were reddened from coughing, his neck’s veins faintly visible, “My Jiang Family has invested so much equipment and technology; I had to see if it was worth it.” His gaze was indifferent as he glanced at Xiao Yi, “Not welcome?”
Xiao Yi smiled, “How could that be? I’ll take you to see the progress right now.”
He placed the handkerchief he was holding back into his pocket, “No need, I’ll look myself.”
After that, he checked one room after another, every possible hiding spot, every place that looked like a secret chamber mechanism, he left nothing unchecked.
Finally, only one room was left.
Xiao Yi led the way at the front, explaining, “This here is my office.”
Jiang Zhi did not stop, “Can’t I go in?”
Xiao Yi smiled naturally, adjusting his rimless glasses on the bridge of his nose, “Of course you can.” He elegantly gestured ‘please’ and opened the door at the same time.
At the office desk sat a person, dressed in black from head to toe, one pair of slender legs resting on the table, holding a cigarette in hand, glancing sideways at them, “It’s you.” That blue-haired person.
Jiang Zhi picked up from where the other left off, “That hospital idiot.”
Su Qinghou’s lazy smile faded.
He hated it when people called him an idiot.
Xiao Yi surprised, “You two know each other?”
Jiang Zhi looked at Su Qinghou, “I don’t know him.”
He responded back, “I don’t know him.”
Xiao Yi then took the initiative to introduce, “This is Mr. Su, our hospital’s investor.” After introducing Su Qinghou, he introduced Jiang Zhi, “And this is Mr. Jiang, the young master of the Jiang Family.” He explained to Su Qinghou, “Our medical genetics project that we are researching, Jiang Family is also a partner.”
Su Qinghou retracted his legs, snuffed out the cigarette, walked up to Jiang Zhi, and extended his hand, “Su Qinghou.”
He responded, “Jiang Zhi.”
Their hands clasped, and three seconds later, they each released, their facial expressions unreadable, showing neither joy nor anger.
At this moment, Jiang Zhi’s phone rang, and he pressed it to his ear.
“Jiang Zhi.”
That was the very person he was looking for.
He covered the phone’s earpiece, “Sorry, I have to go.” And with that, he turned and left.
In the office, Su Qinghou sat back in the chair, propped up his feet, the smile gone, his eyes darkened, “This Jiang Zhi,” he said, “is a real eyesore.”
Everyone from the hospital stayed behind, except Jiang Zhi who walked out of the lab alone.
Ah Wan took a few people and waited outside; the boss said that even a fly getting out needed to be reported to him; everything was set up tight.
“Boss, why did you come out so quickly? What about the vice president?”
“Give me the car keys.”
Ah Wan passed over the car keys, “Oh.”
Jiang Zhi got into the car.
Vice President Sun followed him out, “Mr. Jiang.”
Jiang Zhi ignored him, turned the steering wheel, pressed the accelerator, and the car sped off. One hand on the wheel, the other holding his phone, “Where are you?”
Zhou Xufang said, “At the intersection of Changfeng Avenue and the expressway.”
Jiang Zhi, his expression still tense, not relaxed in the slightest, “Wait there for me.”
“Mm.”
