Chapter 470: Chapter 394: The Glory of the Fugitive Soldier
Gate of Mephisto, a highland village of Night Fiends.
The Night Demon Girls resided in a narrow cave that only allowed the passage of those with a slender physique, sidestepping to get through; their blue skin seemed as if naturally designed to thrive under moonlight.
As the Rand Kingdom’s Expedition Army marched impressively outside, they hid here, so far apart that without specific directions, no one could reach them.
They had become accustomed to concealing their existence.
Every Night Fiend carried in their veins a magic blessing from the Lady of the Night; despite their frail bodies, they were innately adept at casting spells.
Little Li moved her hands and hooked her index fingers together, swinging them up and down. She imagined a ring forming at her right wrist, then slowly shifting onto her left wrist as she moved it.
When she opened her eyes, indeed, there was the same ring.
Little Li flung her left hand sharply, and the ring of magic flew out, crashing against the rock wall in front of her.
A crater formed; it was in this manner that the Night Fiends had previously defeated the wild wolves.
"That’s it, Little Li."
The tribe was surprised at the speed of her learning.
There were not many in their clan.
"We can’t stay here any longer; the Queen said she wants to go to a farther place, back to her own country," said an elder among the Night Fiends, or rather, an Elder.
The Night Fiends had once encountered Melulan by chance, sensing an aura from her similar to that of the Lady of the Night. They thought they might have found a reliance, but she did not think so.
Life within the cave was not as pleasant as imagined; food, space, freedom, and so on. They had to leave.
Perhaps dealing with the Expedition Army was a good choice; though they had little experience in fighting the Abyss, their resistance to it far surpassed that of humans.
But dealing with human armies was not safe, and it could very likely draw their hostility.
Finding a new, silent place devoid of people to continue their lives was more in line with their current situation, in a location where they could grow crops and be self-sufficient.
As a new era’s mutants, the food grown from the land allowed them easy digestion. As long as they found a Calamity Shadow Region, they could survive, although not thrive, as the Calamity Shadow would not permit extensive cultivation of plants.
So the Night Demon Girls dispersed in search of a place to survive, leaving only the Elders and the injured Night Fiends to wait here.
Perhaps a month, perhaps three to five, those who had left must return, hopefully with good news.
The solitary Night Demon Girls were like birds flying south in winter, cloaked in frost and dew, racing toward the unknown faraway, in the vastness of the world, there should be corners fit for survival.
...
A great number of Undead were being promoted; it was a very spectacular sight.
Even though Lind had been releasing various "events," which is well-known to mean grueling play and spending Gold Coins, followed by giving out trinkets that seem valuable though they are not very useful.
Yet the demand for resources by the Undead was still in a very, very horrific state, even under the condition that all Superior Calamity Hearts were being provided by the Undead themselves.
The Undead provided a large number of jobs for the residents of Rand Kingdom; for this, Lania had already sent letters several times. Almost no one was farming anymore, and although it was not to the extent of living difficulties, if this continued, the Kingdom’s development would inevitably be deformed.
Everyone wanted to become Great Knights, to become Wizard lords, to live on high.
To meet the needs of the Undead, Lind had to supply a great quantity of consumables and equipment, which also depended on the population, and since the work was hard, the compensation given was naturally higher. Everyone had the right to choose a better life, even if he were a Lord, there was no way to forcibly arrange work, unless they were his own Slaves.
Rand Kingdom had almost no Slaves; even those incarcerated in the dungeons were diminishing quickly, only being used when the Undead caused trouble.
NPCs who cause trouble are generally executed or punished and then fined. The value of their lives was not worth the waste of manpower and resources.
The upper echelons needed to consider next year’s food reserves and even further ahead, but ordinary farmers did not need to think so much, nor did they have any need to consider more.
If the current situation continues, all would be well, but the reality was that once this batch of Undead finished promoting and the current version of the Abyssal Great Rift has been cleared, the demand would suddenly plummet to a terrifying level.
When the Undead left the Rand Kingdom for new maps, the entire Kingdom’s industry would overflow, then no one would farm, and those who had grown accustomed to the good life and high income would not want to farm either.
Although by that time Lind would certainly have moved on to a brand-new world with the Undead, perhaps even earlier than they would, this place was after all his homeland, and Newbie Village would not disappear. Rand Kingdom would remain a place where new players would continuously grow, a never-ending field of chives; abandoning it was certainly not an option.
He had to ensure that his appointed chive farmers could manage on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen, Lania.
Lind had been contemplating this issue recently and had come up with several methods. The least reliable but fastest method was to toss out a quest.
