Chapter 161: Chapter 148: The Sword is the Tombstone
Leon turned around, his voice strained as he spoke, "If you hadn’t come, I might have held out longer, but now... run away."
His body swelled, his armor crushed by the expanding flesh, and his bloated figure slowly lost its human shape. Fortunately, the process was slow, indicating that Leon was desperately trying to control the transformation.
Lind had also learned of Leon’s condition and stayed only to manage his own state.
The Undead had risen up and were drinking potions to recover, while frantically throwing on any useful items they could find.
Although it was unclear what secrets lay in the conversation between the two men, seeing Leon talk to Lind and then return to the main hall signaled that the "scene" had ended, and the fighting was to resume.
When fighting a BOSS, one must never get distracted by the plot. Lord Leon’s health bar was still excessively full, the only relief being that the BOSS didn’t have the same freakish self-recovery abilities as Lind, otherwise, they wouldn’t stand a chance.
Throughout, Leon had ignored the Undead, and even in Lind’s eyes, it seemed Leon conveyed a message: "Immortality, quite rare, isn’t it?" Lind was quite certain of it.
Initially, Lind had thought the New Nobility’s Leon was an arrogant man, prejudiced against the Old Nobility and eager to kill them swiftly, but after interacting with him, Lind’s opinion of Leon shifted slightly—a man tinged with tragedy.
One thing was certain, Leon still wanted to kill him and eradicate the Old Nobility, yet Lind felt the difference in their perspectives was merely like that between "the flower and the gardener."
It wasn’t even about hatred, just differing standpoints.
In the gloomy center of the hall, Leon stood hunched over.
The flames, heated to high temperatures, scorched the Iris Flowers eroded by the Abyss. The smell emanating from the charred Calamity was far more detestable than the smell of blood, the stench clenching one’s forehead like an annoying hand.
Surrounded by the Undead, only the death of one side could end this war.
Lind pondered whether, from the perspective of the Undead entering the Leon Territory, they would truly allow a Main City Lord to become like this had he not existed.
Or perhaps, was it all just required by the plot?
He deeply detested when things were driven by plot necessity.
The plot for a minor Red-Name Monster probably should have been discovered during a routine Undead sweep nearby, and then they’d dutifully sacrifice their life and gear and go to their deaths.
"Does Tione’s letter count as a plot device?" Lind wondered, finding himself caught in a terrifying loop of logic if he inserted himself into it, "A homesick, Old Nobility making promises, planning to return and marry his fiancée after everything is safe? No wonder, why wouldn’t I die!"
With this thought, he suddenly stopped.
The last thing he wanted was to get trapped in a loop of logic; since he had managed to escape it, there was no need to shrink back into it.
He raised his voice, "Undead!"
"We must retreat."
As Leon had hinted, it was time for him to escape. This was not an enemy that a Senior Grand Knight could handle, even with a group of level 11 Undeads.
While Leon was still under control, they hurriedly left.
The Undead, seeing Leon do nothing, assumed it was their "first encounter scenario" and turned to leave.
"Sure enough, the first wave is tough, let’s go back and rest up well."
"This BOSS is too strong."
"But it seems like it doesn’t drop gear."
"He’s nearly stripped bare, where would he even have any gear."
...
The most important thing after a battle was the collection of prisoners, but this time there were some issues with recruitment; not all the Undead were willing to join Lind’s forces.
A few Undead, due to their foul mouths during the previous siege, decided to not join for their own gaming experience, preferring to be lone Soldiers instead.
With so many Newbie Villages, the absence of this one still leaves another.
Moreover, not steaming the bun for a bit of spirit, getting beaten up for being foul-mouthed, if they eagerly joined again, their future could easily be imagined.
Gaming should be joyful, grievances truly can’t be swallowed.
Lind was helpless about this, the "NPCs’" rights came from his own fabrication, whether issuing tasks or giving rewards, all were guided by Lind’s gaming logic.
It was all out of his own pocket, unrelated to any system, and he still couldn’t see the data up to this moment, didn’t know the length of his own health bar, but he could be sure it had grown a bit longer than 5000 because he was always growing.
Without authority, he couldn’t restrain any Undead or influence their thoughts.
Thankfully, most Undead chose to join, successfully increasing the number of Undead in the territory to over two hundred, further expanding Lind’s power.
"Miss Miko shouldn’t have too much headache, Leon City also has quite a few Pharmacists."
The configuration of Main City is different; Blacksmiths, Pharmacists, and Merchants aren’t limited to just one.
Blacksmiths could directly be sent to factory production lines, while Pharmacists could be assigned potion-making tasks based on their abilities.
The most important were the Merchants; Lind needed to open shops, and training Merchants himself was too slow, like the reticent kind of Merchant like Renzo, not suitable.
Now that he had snatched a batch of Merchants from the Main City, it greatly compensated for Lind’s lack of talent in this area.
Under the zeal of the Undead, numerous NPCs left Leon City; there was no chance to pack, and in fact, upon learning that Lind would not use the currency of Leon Territory, they no longer thought of packing.
What was left at home were all worthless items.
Lind’s intention was simple, do not take anything, better leave it for my Undead to scavenge, they love doing this.
Leon City, radiating an aura of Calamity, could erupt at any time with a new Noble Lord.
The entire city had already been turned into a forbidden zone of life.
But as the scene changes, the Undead were already getting excited.
"Large BOSS!"
"Waited so long, finally there’s a boss that’s stuck."
"Boss is weak to fire, but all Mages probably won’t be enough, if we could lure him out from the inner city, kite-fighting might stand a chance to win."
"How about preparing traps in advance? Just wear him down with traps!"
Over two hundred people gathered together discussing how to deal with Lord Leon.
Perhaps Leon couldn’t find a gardener, but now he was faced with a group of unconventional flower thieves.
The previous siege had wasted too much power, and too many had died, otherwise the Undead believed they had the advantage and couldn’t lose.
Lind was the last to leave Leon City.
He stood before the corpse holding the "tombstone," turned his head, looking at the town affected by the war, his gaze seemed to see Leon inside struggling to suppress himself.
"After cremating the body, remember to place this sword on top of his grave," Lind instructed to the Soldiers handling the body, preventing Calamity from resurrecting the dead.
Although he wasn’t a gardener, he could still help bury some things.
